OFFICE HOURS

My office is 5110 Dwinelle. My name is next to the door.

Summer 2018 Office Hours

During Session D (July 2- August 10) Tuesdays and Thursdays 11:30-Noon (drop in)

Also appointments at other times in the morning are possible. The meeting place will probably not be the office. Email me.

*You are welcome simply to drop by during office hours. However, if you contact me, I can assign a specific time slot for you, so you can be sure to have access and not have to wait (or wait long) in the hallway.

—General comments for Fall and Spring semesters —

Requesting a time other than regular office hours

Current Cal students: When you are unable to come to regular office hours it might be possible to make an appointment for another time although there are weeks when I will be too busy for this. Email me (don't message me through bCourse) with these three conditions:

1) I need a few days notice

2) "appointment request" needs to be in the subject line

3) details on the classes (course number and title and time it meets) or other events that prevent you from coming to regular office hours.

*I'll respond within one or two days, letting you know whether I can meet and, if I can, what times might work. I will be very reluctant to meet in the afternoon. Look for a morning time. I come to campus early.

Making full use of our office time together

If you tell me the general content of what you would like to discuss it might increase the time slot I assign to you. My default time is 20 minutes, 15 minutes when there are four or more students, 10 minutes where there are still more. I regularly extend this to 30 minutes for complicated discussions about grades, academic dishonesty or exploring course material thoughtfully. *I cannot provide a grade estimate on the spot. This definitely needs 2-3 days advance notice. If your question is about a specific assignment, that is different. But if it is "in general, what is my grade standing?" I need to calculate that ahead of time.
