JAPAN 7BSp18 Intro Modern J-Lit/Cult

There are as yet no announcements for this class.

JAPAN 155Sp18 Modern J-Lit

Please note that this class has a language prerequisite: Completion of J100A or equivalent. Please contact me if you are not sure whether you have sufficient language training. All reading material is in Japanese, although we do read slowly and there are extensive vocabularly glosses for the assigned material.

EA LANG 105Sp18 Interpreting Love Narratives

I have sent this to a number of students who emailed me saying they were concerned whether they could enroll or not:

EA105 Spring Enrollment issues

This is a “form” response since I get many inquiries about this class.

EA105 will fill Spring 2018. Receiving a spot in the class might be somewhat difficult. By policy we set aside most seats in the class until the beginning of the semester. The best thing you can do is stay in touch with me and attend the first day. At that time it is possible to get a sense as to how many wish to enroll.

As a general rule I am able to accommodate most but not all students who stay committed to the class for the 1-2 weeks.

Around the 10-day or 2-week mark I sometimes drop from the waitlist a half dozen or so students.

Your rank number on the waitlist is much less relevant than the quality of work you do for the many early assignments.

It is also possible you cannot get on the waitlist. Students come and go so my advice there is to keep watching and keep trying to join the list as soon as possible. You should still come to the first day of class.

This is a difficult class. Each semester there are a certain number of students who fight hard to get into the class but later feel much less enthusiastic about their success.

* This class is heavy on analysis. Do not take it if you don’t like to generate your own, disciplined analysis according to a method I set out.

* This class is almost entirely group work. Again, avoid the course if that is not your cup of tea. The grading scheme is designed to give an advantage to those willing to work well in groups.

* Finally, this course requires equal interest (not equal expertise) in China, Japan and Korea. Being weak in interest / commitment to learning in any of these three counries has a dramatic, negative impact on the course grade, sometimes as much as to fail the student. Don’t take this class if you cannot sustain interest in all three countries.

* This is an active learning classroom environment. It requires regular preparation and regular attendance. Most assignments happen in class and cannot be made up if you were absent or arrived late. If it is not your intention to have nearly perfect attendance I suggest you seek out another course since you will be swimming upstream to score well in this course.

* This class is hard to take as a pass / no pass class.

December 28, 2017 —

The first day of class will include two graded assessments. These can be made up only with difficulty and not for full credit. Be sure to attend the first day. There is nothing to do to prepare for these two assessments, although if I release the eBook for the class in time, the discussion of ToM would be helpful to you.

January 11, 2018 —

I have published the bCourse site for this course and made there, this announcement. If you would like access to this class but are not registered or on the waitlist, I can add you as an observer. You need to send me your berkeley.edu email address.

Welcome to all interested in taking this course ..... Although I have not finished construction of the website (and so, later, you will get many unwanted notifications of website construction events), I wanted to give you access to three key documents to help you understand this course, either in preparation for it or if you are unsure whether it is the right fit for you.

Grade Estimator — This provides a list of the assignments that will need to be submitted and so on. In addition to there, there is considerable reading, and the viewing, outside of class, of 7 films. EA105Sp18 Grade Estimator v01.xlsx

Schedule — This is rudimentary but will give you a sense of class structure.EA105Sp18 Schedule early release.xlsx

Early release of the textbook — I am authoring a textbook for this course. It is not finished. I am providing a PDF of some of it now, because it described the course in detail. You can take a look at it but don't keep this document. It is bound to trip you up later if you use it, since much is still being changed. ILN Body Pre-class release for students.pdf
