For me:

This page is updated AS THE CLASS PROGRESSES and not just before a session. Content can change after a session to better reflect what had happened.

IF THERE IS NO ENTRY FOR A DAY ("lorem" is still everywhere), USE AS THE OFFICIAL STATEMENT FOR HOW TO PREPARE the Google Sheet version of the schedule titled "Backup schedule" which can be found inside the "G-Drive folder (view only)," or ask me.

Week 1

Notes for this week:

  • We get the class started but with the awareness that the first day of class is also Inauguration Day and a certain amount of unpredictability associated with that day. The Friday credibility lecture is important.

Session 1 Wed Jan 20 — Orientation (see attendance note)

ATTENDANCE NOTE: Presidential inauguration ceremonies might begin around 8:30AM, Berkeley time. The official swearing of the new president is perhaps at 9AM? (Biden becomes president at 12:01 EST.) Although it seems unlikely that there will be a disruption of this ceremony, it is reasonable to think that we can't be entirely sure. If you want to see the swearing in and it is running late, or if something happens and you want to follow the news, you can miss this session but you will need to view the recorded video and complete the assignment associated with it. However, you will not be marked absent.

Before session

  • Read the syllabus, look over the credibility assignment and gather your questions.

During session (can change last minute)

This is an outline for the 17 audio files on bCourse.

  1. For students who have recently joined the class: review the preliminary material (audio and video files) on the Sonic top page, read past announcements) Went from 30 to 23 now back to 30, so I’m concerned that 7 might be uninformed.
  2. Announcements — read them
  3. Google Form
  4. Feedback
  5. About me and how this class was conceived
  6. The “equal interest rule”
  7. Attendance • Required attendance except for distant time zone, These I will put in DTZ : Alissa (Japan, for now), Cathy (China), Yi Xuan (Malaysia), Junqiao (China), Jimmy (China). Please schedule to meet with me, except Alissa with whom I have already worked. • Video presence unless you talk with me about it • No multitasking • Zoom login issues
  8. Manage assignments, no late material (boxes lock)
  9. Academic honesty, very vigilant will ask sometimes when doubt is just small
  10. Active learning • This is going to show primarily through the type of research you do.
  11. Portfolio grades
  12. P/NP
  13. How to know what to do, when (sonic) • Syllabus location (sonic) • Syllabus, Part 2 (sonic, what I prefer to be called)
  14. Engage: if you stay involved, the grade will take care of itself … focus on learning all variety of things, not just that aspect of tea that you like most
  15. About the class: Module presentation, module additions and evaluation, assessments
  16. Submit questions
  17. View all the credibility material before class next time

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtz" assignment to do.

Session 2 Fri Jan 22 — Credibility

Before session

  • Take a look at the credibility assignment and bring questions.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call. NOTE:
    • Attendance except for DTZ students is expected for all session.
    • "Late arrival" means if you are not present at the time I call your name. If you have missed roll call please never interrupt class to say that you are now present, not use the after-class time to discuss this. Just submit to the missed class Google Form. I am aware that technology can complicate things. I have now taught seven zoom classes and have a good sense for when this is an issue. I will keep this in mind when recording attendance.
    • As the syllabus states, you are expected to have a video presence unless you have scheduled office hours with me and discussed your situation.
    • Also, entirely avoid multitasking if you want a perfect attendance record. I input a "1" or a fraction of "1" after class that reflects your engagement, not just presence, in class.
  2. I will talk about issues related to academic credibility and answer questions related to the several assignments devoted to this. I will also describe how you will be graded on credibility for the remainder of the course

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtzab" assignment to do. If you missed this class you definitely must complete this assignment.

Week 2

Notes for this week:

  • This week is primarily about credibility. Your many credibility assignments are due. These take a while, so plan accordingly.

Session 3 Mon Jan 25 — Credibility exercise, cont. Course structure.

Before session

  • Know that we will take screen shots of the class today, so everyone can identify everyone when asked to do peer reviews using students' names.
  • Nothing to do. However, newly arrived students should complete the Google Form ("A few biographical questions about you" https://forms.gle/4r7Tcc8UY9ACpNUo9 ), read all past announcements, listen to the Session 1 Orientation audio files, and look over the syllabus. Then email me questions, if any. Note, too, that late arriving students still need to meet the assignment deadlines. There are no extensions. The credibility assignment is time consuming.
  • DTZ students should schedule an initial office hour with me if they have not already done so.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. Screen shots of the class.
  3. We will continue with the credibility exercise using the URLs at Session 2.
  4. I will make some specific comments about how the class will proceed with modules, developing candidates for inclusion, reviewing candidates.
    • Citation in a more or less formal style (replace this line)
    • Author expert for what you are using it for? lorem
    • How credible is the “publisher”? lorem
    • Contexts: lorem
    • Quality of the references used in this source: lorem
    • Tone (formal-informal spectrum, serious-jocular spectrum, etc): lorem
    • Argument (logical-rhetorical spectrum, logic of conclusions): lorem

After session

  • Make final changes to your Student Profile pages, including confirming that you have listed your classname correctly, provided a pronunciation guide to the name when appropriate, and adding your credibility statements.
  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it. Uploads will be to our G-Drive folder (view only)—see button at the top of this page.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtz" assignment to do.

Session 4 Wed Jan 27 — Getting to know each other some

Before session

  • You need to update your profile page before this session begins. That will include the credibility section.
  • Everyone: Scan through at least half of the Student Profiles focusing on the credibility comments. In class, you will need to work with these comments.
  • Although it is unlikely there are newly arrived students at this point, if there are, they should refer to the list of things that need to be done located at Session 3.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. In all my classes a sense of community strengthens the learning environment. I respect that amount of peer-to-peer teaching that happens at a university like this with so many intelligent students. I try to facilitate that to some degree. This day is designed just so that when you are in a group with someone later, it is likely you will have already met and talked with them once. It also gives you a chance to learn from each other about how you are tackling the credibility problem. And there might be a chance to share some tea thoughts (although this will happen formally, later in class.)
  3. We will make breakout groups, then 5-7 minutes later we will reform those groups, and just spend the whole class doing this.
  4. I will visit a group or groups with each rotation—not to answer questions or to participate but rather so that DTZ students can observe groups. (I also ask they they meet together within their near time zones.)

After session

  • Distant time zone students need to complete their group meeting assignment. Those who missed this session cannot make it up but could, in theory, meet with the overseas students as a Plan B in substitute for this day.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtz" assignment to do. There almost certainly will be—just meeting with your group is not sufficient.

Session 5 Fri Jan 29 — Module 01 [GEOG] — East Asian geography

Before session

  • Read bCourse ➤ Files ➤ Module 01 ➤ "Module 01 GEOG v210125a.pdf" together with the files that are inside the Module 01 folder.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. I may ask some questions about the module's primary document.
  3. We share some of the maps submitted, discuss them, and I offer advice for future submissions. The PowerPoint used for this will not be uploaded to bCourse.
  4. Practice submission to a RESEARCH assignment. I will describe my approach to submitting to the module (I started my research by thinking, "I want to compare where all the high mountain tea farms are in China, Taiwan, Korea (North and South), and Japan.")

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it. Some students might find that they have an assignment to complete that is based on the recording. Recordings might be in Media Gallery or in the "view only" Google folder. Check both places for a while until things settle down.

Week 3

Notes for this week:

  • We work out some of the issues having to do with "research candidates" via the geography submissions, which is a "dry run" (not graded except complete/incomplete) submission.
  • The rest of the week is "set up" for the course—historical overview and the basic qualities that East Asian cultures have consistently attributed to tea.
  • An unusual feature of this week is that there is nothing to do in preparation for class for either Wednesday or Friday. Enjoy this break, it isn't the usual course of things!

Session 6 Mon Feb 1 — Questions and researched candidates for Module 01 [GEOG]

Before session

  • Reviewing Module 01, do research towards making a contribution to that module that is
    • credible
    • interesting
    • not already in the module, and of course
    • relates to East Asian tea CULTURE (broadly defined)

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. We discuss student submissions.
  3. I will outline how the submissions will be peer-reviewed.

After session

  • You will be asked to peer-review student submissions.
  • Some students (DTZ students, and perhaps absent students) might find that they have an assignment to complete that is based on the recording.

  2. Short lecture highlighting issues around the advent of tea culture in the three countries. Explanation of folder resources.
  3. Short lecture with discussion about tea "core attributes" and the overall schema of how we pursue our study of tea culture during this course.

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Some students (DTZ students, and perhaps absent students) might find that they have an assignment to complete that is based on the recording.

Week 4

Notes for this week:

  • This week covers part but not all of the "basics" of the tea plant.

Session 9 Mon Feb 8 — Module 03A [BASICS] The plant camellia sinensis

There was an Internet outage for me this morning. My Internet has returned but Xfinity says that the Internet in the neighborhood is still down. Therefore, I've set up class in two versions, just in case I lose Internet again unexpected. Also, if during class my screen goes dark, switch to the of the below plans.

NOTE: It is very important that you come to class having done the reading with care. For a while I think it is prudent for me to spot check to check that the reading is getting done, not as a skim, so it is likely I will ask students to answer some basic questions based on the material. For example, I might show a picture of a plant and ask you whether it is a tea plant. Or I might ask you to draw the upper portion of a tea sprout. Or I might ask for a simply summary of why in some countries we say tea while in others cha and why Portugal is different. Get the idea?

Before session

  • Read and view with care bCourse -- Files -- Module 03A -- 01 Tea plant - origin and physical characteristics v210206.pptx
  • Read with care, including my margin note Module 03A -- 02 Tea or cha
  • Using Module 03A -- 03 Chemical composition of tea be able to answer this question without looking at notes in a simple and easy to understand way, if the person asking the question is well-educated and knows a little bit about chemistry: "What is in a tea leaf?"

During session (if the Zoom room OPENS before 11:10AM)

  1. Roll call
  2. I will define "street questions" and how they are used in class.
  3. You will make, and answer street questions using Sonic > Session Details > G-Drive editable folder (at the top of this page > "EA109Sp21 EX210208all InC-PostC Street questions"
    • Navigate to the above Google sheet
    • Find your name
    • Find the section of the "Mod-03A BASICS Master Document v210207.pdf" for which you are to write a street question
    • Write the question, then paste it in
    • Follow further instructions I will give in class
  4. You will compose and check paragraphs on chemical composition in pairs, using the prompt in the assignment
    • Write your paragraph
    • In small groups of two, read each other's paragraph and consider changes
    • Submit to the assignment EX210208all InC-PostC Chemistry

During session (if the Zoom room DOES NOT OPEN before 11:10AM)

  1. You may do the below anytime between now and noon. I will try to be available via email during our regular class hour. I can manage emails but not Zoom when I am using my personal hotspot (because the cellular here is really weak).
  2. Read the explanation of "street questions" on bCourse > Files > Mod-03A > "Mod-03A BASICS Master Document v210207.pdf"
  3. Make sure you have access to the G-Drive editable folder (I have sent an email to you)
    • Write the question, then paste it in by 2PM today for NTZ students and 11PM Feb 10 for DTZ students
    • Check after noon for the street question you should answer and answer it by 6AM tomorrow morning for NTZ students and 6AM Feb 11 for DTZ students
  5. You will compose and check paragraphs on chemical composition in pairs, using the prompt in the assignment
    • See EX210208all InC-PostC Chemistry

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtz" assignment to do.

Session 10 Wed Feb 10 — Module 03B [BASICS] Cultivation, harvesting and leaf processing

Before session

  • There is an assignment to complete that asks you to study and understand the flow chart on tea leaf production for different types of tea. I have not yet been able to make a 03B module. It will come.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. I'll ask questions about the flowchart.
  3. I'll ask some of you to introduce your processing steps and discuss how your tea differs.

After session

  • Distant time zone students have the same assignment as others but with a slightly later due date.

Session 11 Fri Feb 12 — Module 03B [BASICS] Cultivation, harvesting and leaf processing (cont)

Before session

  • Nothing to do.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. No roll call. Instead, wave "hi" to the camera and say your classname.
  2. I'll say something about tea balls, bricks, powdered tea, looseleaf tea.
  3. I'll show a Tang dynasty (not really Tang) tea brick and a pu-er tea disk.
  4. I'll explain several extra credit assignments.
  5. Then we do an in-class exercise on tealeaf shapes.

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • While I am catching up on module work, you are welcome to do any of the several extra credit assignments. Expect there to be readings for Wednesday.

Week 5

Notes for this week:

  • We continue with Module 03.

No class—President's Day

Session 12 Wed Feb 17 — Module 03B [BASICS] Cultivation, harvesting and leaf processing (cont)

Before session

  • Read the Master Document in "Mod-03B BASICS Cultivation harvesting and processing" and, using that, work carefully through the files in that folder.
  • While working through this folder, identify what you would like to do research on for the RESEARCH assignment that is due Thursday, 6AM. Absolutely no extensions for submission. Manage your time.
  • This folder has a lot of material in it. You do not need to cover everything by Wednesday but your research cannot duplicate anything already said (except of course there can be overlap / common ground) so, at minimum, you need to be very familiar with its contents in time to complete, and submit, the research. RESEARCH assignments are core to the class. They cannot be skipped for either letter grade or P/NP students.
  • Testing begins next week. You are responsible for Mod-01, Mod-02 (signs only), and Mod-03.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call
  2. I will cover some of the material in the module.
  3. I will answer questions you might have about the module.
  4. It is possible we will do an exercise.

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • If your research has not already progressed, it is time to get busy on it.

Session 13 Fri Feb 19 — Student additions to Modules 1, 3

Before session

  • There is nothing to do for this session, specifically, but this session is based on your RESEARCH submissions that were due Thursday, 6AM.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. I will identify what student additions I have made to the module, if any, that can be tested.
  3. If there is time, I might make some brief comments about the interviews but this is unlikely.

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Prep for the interview and watch for further explanation as to what to do on the "off" days when you are not interviewing.
  • DTZ students need to schedule 20-minute office hour time slots for next week, so I can interview you.

Week 6

Notes for this week:

  • This week has been re-booted. The one-on-one interviews have been taken off the calendar.

Session 14 Mon Feb 22 — No class

Session 15 Wed Feb 24 — Class processes | Module 03C [BASICS] Premodern storage and transportation, Day One (Introduction)

Before session

  • Read and view with care Module 03C. If you arrive having read the material, as I am guessing and hoping you will, it will go a long way towards reducing the number of midterms in this class.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. A short credibility exercise
  3. Tealeaf work (I will ask you to spend 5-10 minutes looking over the mini-encyclopedia you made ... you can do that while waiting for class, too ... I sent out an announcement with its link)
  4. Comments on class process — We are starting a 3-day cycle for a module:
    1. Before DAY ONE, I release the module and you read it in preparation for class
    2. On DAY ONE, I check to see if the reading was done, I make additional comments about the module content
    3. Before DAY TWO you submit the RESEARCH assignment on the module
    4. On DAY TWO you peer review a portion of the submissions and, that night, submit a PEER-EVAL
    5. There is nothing to do before DAY THREE
    6. On DAY THREE we visit in one way or another some of the RESEARCH submissions
  5. It is pretty likely we will run out of time today and I will not be able to say the below, so I include it here in print. This is an explanation of why the interviews were canceled. As you know, it was a sudden decision. It was the work with the PEER-EVALS and how careful they were that made the difference. Here are the various reasons (most of them anyway):
    • There was, for me, a tension between module inclusion due to interest and module exclusion to the need to simplify the modules for tests. I found I was excluding things that deserve to be shared so as not to make you too nervous about test content.
    • I am a bit concerned that, after the first test, you would begin to bring to the module testable rather than interesting things to make the next test less challenging to prepare for. That runs contrary to both the teaching and learning goals of the course.
    • The quality of work done so far (both in RESEARCH and in PEER EVALS—and both need to maintain that quality), and the energy behind it, satisfies the teaching goal of encouraging exploration / discovery and satisfies the learning goal of learning a variety of things about tea while exercising good critical judgment. I feel, at this point, that I can assess you sufficiently through these submissions with no need for an interview.
    • Dropping the interview days opens up the schedule significantly, allowing us to slow down some. That supports my goal of making the class less difficult than previous versions.
    • There is a critical mass of motivated students. As long as this remains the case and as long as they continue as they have, the learning environment is a robust one and doesn't need exams to maintain the current quality level.

After session

  • DTZ students will have an ENGAGE assignment that explores both the assigned reading and whatever new information might arise during class this day. If there are in-class exercises, that will be assigned, too.

Session 16 Fri Feb 26 — Mod-02 COURSE MAP-HIST-ATTRIBUTES

Before session

  • There is nothing to do.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. Explanation of the chart "Inception of Tea Culture — East Asia", Part of Mod-02 (and this part of the lecture will be extracted and placed in the Mod-02 folder to accompany the chart)
  3. Explanation of Mod-02: "attributes" "history" "course map"
  4. Begin RESEARCH200226 PostC Historical Overview

After session

  • DTZ students should view the session.

Week 7

Notes for this week:

  • Module 03C on storage and transportation ends.
  • The complex topic of "tea service" begins with Module 04 which is likely going to become Mod-04A.

Session 17 Mon March 1 — Module 03C [BASICS] Premodern storage and transportation, Day Two (PEER-EVAL of student submissions)

Before session

  • You will need to have submitted your RESEARCH on-time. Attendance on this day is quite important.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. This is the second of the 3-day cycle for a module. On this day you complete a PEER-EVAL in the way that you did for the Mod-03B submissions earlier. Reminder the PEER-EVAL assignments are key to your engagement grade. If you submitted for credibility, you are reviewing interest submissions, and vice versa. Here are the files you need (all but the submission page are in bCourse > Files > Mod-03C > 0000 for PEER EVAL:
    • To know which files to review: PEER210301 Mod 03C review duties NONAMES.xlsx
    • To know details about those files: RESEARCH210301 Mod 03C BASICS student file details NONAMES.xlsx
    • To access the files themselves: RESEARCH210301 Mod 03C BASICS (c) CODED or RESEARCH210301 Mod 03C BASICS (i) CODED *******c = credibility, i = interest
  3. To submit your work: Assignments > PEER-EVAL MOD-03C BASICS

After session

  • DTZ students will probably have very little recorded session content to view. They will complete the same PEER-EVAL work as their classmates.

Session 18 Wed March 3 — Module 03C [BASICS] Premodern storage and transportation, Day Three (sharing of student submissions)

Before session

  • Nothing to do.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. This is the third of the 3-day cycle for a module. This is a day where we share research discoveries. Perhaps you present what you learned (that wasn't already written into the submission), perhaps I discuss how the submissions are integrated into the module, perhaps we just think over the module just completed.

After session

  • lorem

Session 19 Fri March 5 — Mod-04 BREWING and SERVICE (Day 1: Module introduction)

Modules (full TOC is here)

  • Mod-01: GEOGRAPHY (on bCourse)
  • Mod-02: HISTORY (currently on bCourse)
  • Mod-03: TEA BASICS (on bCourse)
  • Mod-04: BREWING and SERVICE (go to Google folder)
  • Mod-05: DISCOVERY LEGENDS, TEA "CORE ATTRIBUTES," ADVENT OF TEA CULTURE

  • Mod-08: TEA PLACES: CHANGING VENUES, CONTESTS AND OTHER GATHERINGS

Most current course mind-map

Before session

  • Read and view with care Module 04. As before, if you arrive having read the material, it will go a long way towards reducing the number of midterms in this class. For now, the second midterm in still on the calendar.
  • Do not begin research until this session has finished because I might say during session what will not be acceptable or what might need emphasis.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. bCourses > Modules > Administrative stuff > Answering March 3 questions
  3. READING CHECK (dry run) ..... After today's dry run, I'll give a number so you can see how I'm thinking. Here's the key to that — Scale: 0 = "we will quiz next time," 1-2 = "this isn't good enough and if this continues once or twice more, we will revert to one-on-one interviews," 3 = "I'm not sure, let's see how is goes next time," 4 = "good enough but could be better," 5 = "yes, this is at the level that we need to be at." PLEASE NOTE: if you are cramming before class begins, that suggests to me already that you haven't read with enough care. You should not be looking at notes or the module by this point.
  4. Module coverage: I'll answer questions on the module, discuss some aspects of the module's topic, discuss research options when necessary.

After session

  • DTZ students will have an ENGAGE assignment. If there are in-class exercises, those will be assigned, too.
  • You can start research for the module if you wish, or wait until the next session and ask questions first.

Week 8

Notes for this week:

  • The complex topic of "tea service" begins. Perhaps we continue to explore this topic. Perhaps we move on to legends. I'll get a sense of the room and decide whether this is the better time to continue with service. On the mind map you can see the "service" includes a very large variety of sub-topics.

Session 20 Mon March 8 — Mod-04 BREWING and SERVICE (Day 2: Lecture or Research Day), optional attendance

Modules (full TOC is here)

  • Mod-01: GEOGRAPHY (on bCourse)
  • Mod-02: HISTORY (currently on bCourse)
  • Mod-03: TEA BASICS (on bCourse)
  • Mod-04: BREWING and SERVICE (go to Google folder)
  • Mod-05: DISCOVERY LEGENDS, TEA "CORE ATTRIBUTES," ADVENT OF TEA CULTURE
  • Mod-06: TEA WORDS: MANUALS, LITERATURE, LAWS
  • Mod-07: TEA OBJECTS: CERAMICS, OTHER UTENSILS
  • Mod-08: TEA PLACES: CHANGING VENUES, CONTESTS AND OTHER GATHERINGS

Most current course mind-map

Before session

  • Nothing to prepare for this session.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. No roll call.
  2. CONTENT NOT DECIDED AHEAD OF SESSION. Some, all or no part of this day might be used by me for lecturing on the module. OR this day might be a second introduction day when I feel the module is too long to assign in full for Day 1. OR this day might just be silent researching by students with me in the room if questions come up. Since this content won't be announced before this day begins, attendance is optional. If I lecture or if for other reasons I feel the video needs to be viewed, I'll announce that after the session is over.

After session

  • You should continue research, or start if you have not already. The RESEARCH assignment is due 6AM on the morning before the next session.
  • DTZ students—there will be no ENGAGE assignment. Watch for my announce to know whether any portion of the video needs viewing.

Most current course mind-map

Before session

  • PEER-EVAL needs to be submitted on time. It becomes part of the work content for this day.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. I use Zoom metrics and direct observation for attendance on this day because we get started right away. Arrive on time.
  2. About the submitted PEER-EVALS (compared to the RESEARCH candidates) — Okay, this work was much better. We were an inch from dropping this course plan last time. If you can do good work at this MB (Module Building) stage today, we will at least go through Module 5 before testing.
  3. Again, just noting this: When we don’t test, I monitor you much more casually and the grades are pretty generous. Once I feel there are some who need to be assessed with a more critical gaze, that is, there is a separate between students, I need data (as in assessments) to make those grades and I can’t just assess some people. This is just a practical reality not a teaching preference: I won’t teach a class that I think doesn't have learning value. Right now I think this is working. Once it isn’t, the class will need to become something else.
  4. These are the relevant locations for you today:
    • Session Details > EA109Sp21 G-folder (editable) > Module 04 > "Module-04 Master document"
      • This is where you will put your paragraphs
    • Session Details > EA109Sp21 G-folder (editable) > Module 04 > "Module-04 Master document style rules"
      • This tells you the style rules for the Master document
    • Session Details > EA109Sp21 G-folder (editable) > Module 04 > various folder — use the right one
      • This is where you will put the renamed and reworked files
    • Session Details > EA109Sp21 G-folder (editable) > Module 04 > "MOD-04 student submissions as individual files"
      • This is your access to the file that you will be working with today
    • To be released via bCourse when ready: "MB Mod-04 content champion duties"

After session

  • DTZ students will not have an ENGAGE assignment but should check the beginning of the video for comments by me and questions by students. They do not need to view the entire video.
  • The Module Building (MB) work is due after class. If you were placed into a group, this might include further discussions with your group after class is over.

  5. Go to "Workflow" (above) and read that. Note in particular what is the learning objective of each day.
  6. Go to "the full TOC" (above) and look over that. I want you to know about it before you do research for Module 05.
  7. Work on your task. Ask me questions or ask the "content champion" for the section questions. Do not ask the original submitter anything.
  8. When your task is done, spend the rest of the hour re-reading the module for both learning purposes and discovery of issues, if any.

  • Do not begin research until this session has finished because I might say during session what will not be acceptable or what might need emphasis.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. (READING CHECK, as announced, is moved to Friday) Module coverage: I'll answer questions on the module, discuss some aspects of the module's topic, discuss research options when necessary.

    • What fits into this module? — This is your module. Instead of me setting the guidelines as to what should or should not be included, please ask "Is this something I would like to include, from my perspective." However, do check other modules, especially Module 07 and 08 to be sure it shouldn't be located elsewhere. Do this work carefully.
    • Julia, I have your copy of the Master Document. I have removed it so that students do not accidentally put work there rather than on the main document. Let me know if you need it.
  3. Citation correction work first: Check the below document to make sure your citation is not listed there. I have asked some to correct their work. If your is there, make that correction before doing anything else. Then move on to the PEER EVAL work.

  2. Announcements
    • What fits into this module? — There might be some lack of clarity whether it should be in Module 7 or 8. I don't you need to worry about this but if it seems it should be in NEITHER one of them, that should be noted.
  3. PEER-EVALS of RESEARCH submitted — Location of files:
    • PEER-EVAL submission is to a Google form accessed via the "G-Drive folder (Google forms) button at the top of this Session Details page. Select the correct one ("PEER-EVAL of student research submissions for modules 7 and 8") AND SUBMIT IT MULTIPLE TIMES.
