Canonical text from Japan:

The 11th c. (Heian period):

The Tale of Genji

by Murasaki Shikibu

Assignment 1 for this day:

We will be reading selections from The Tale of Genji. However, as support material for that text, I would like students first to read the 5 books of love poems that are contained in the important imperial anthology that contributed to the standard view of aesthetic, including love poetry, of Murasaki's time. Please read from the reader on bSpace titled "Kokinshu_reader" those books of love. They begin on page 10. You do not need to read these for their literary quality; rather, read them for what they suggest of the expectations of romantic relationships, what is valued, typical symbols used to express aspects of love and so on. Further, the five books together represent a trajectory of a romantic love affair. How would you describe that typical trajectory?

Assignment 2 for this day:

The Tale of Genji by Murasaki Shikibu as translated by Royall Tyler. For this day, read this chapter:
1) Paulownia Pavilion

..... As with the Kokinshu, please read this for what it says of romantic relationships and how they might relate to some of the material cover in the past few lectures.

***Please remember that all assigned material is subject to quizzing, pop-quizzing and/or additional written assignments.

ROOM CHANGE: New room, beginning today Sept 9 is 141 McCone

Cloud Dream of the Nine

by Kim Manjun

Cloud Dream of the Nine, Chapters 1-5

"Cloud Dream of the Nine" can also be read in Three Virtuous Women, which is on reserve. The character terminology is very different since that translation, by Rutt, uses Chinese equivalents instead of Korean names, as in our translation, by Gale. Here is a chart that matches up the names in the two translations, with some details of their various names: Cloud Dream of the Nine characters

You will be responsible only through Chapter 10 for the test, though I will give you a summary of the remaining chapters of the book in lecture on this day.
