Instructions for 恋歌 prep sheets

Instructions

Prep sheets are due at the beginning of a session. They cannot be made up later. Fill these out as best you can. They are part of the preparation grade for this course. Print out the blank form titled "Koiuta prep sheet" that is on bSpace and submit it at the beginning of a class session, following the specific instructions on the schedule.

Interpretation of the heading of the day's poems

Each set of love poems has one or two headings at the top of the page. The student should write in two-four English sentences what they think these descriptive phrases meant for Heian lovers.

There are a variety of questions that can be asked of each poem.

Individual poem work

One to all of the poems may require one or two of the below for that poem. The schedule will indicate what to do. For example, if next to KKS 590 there is "Message" written, then you are to follow the instructions for "Message" below, and so on.

"Diagram"

Diagram the poem. Insert a verticle line dividing the top and bottom when appropriate. Double underline 助動詞. Write above the last 字 of each inflecting word (that is, 動詞・助動詞) what 形 it is in. Use 未・用・終・体・已・命 as your key and circle these, please.

"Message"

What love message is carried by the poem? (This is not the literal meaning of the poem.) Answer with one or two English prose sentences.

"Reply"

What type of answer would you be like to write (as you, not pretending to be a Heian person)? Answer with one English prose sentence.

"Key words"

Reply poems usually picked up words from the incoming poem and used them in the reply. What words would you use? Write them using the かな or 漢字 that was in the poem (not the pronuncing guide below the poem). This exercise checks to see if you recognize the key words of a poem.
