| The three pictures above show a famous leaf from an Illustrated Tale of Genji (Genji monogatari emaki), from the chapter Yomogiu (蓬生), where Genji traverses the over-grown, weedy garden of the lonely Safflower Woman (末摘花, Suetsumuhana), at night under the moonlight. (She can be seen waiting in the upper, right-hand corner of the top picture.) The man under the parasol is Genji. The bottom right of the three pictures shows part of the result of the long project to recover this scroll using new computer and chemical techniques coupled with a team of artists. |
