San felipe, Baja, 1984

Tom Gray

I came across these old pictures recently while rumaging through my garage. It was May, 1984. "Wind Tracks" called 1984 the pivital year in windsurfing. We didn't know or care. We were just two lowly college students at UC Berkeley. We had completly forsaken windsurfing for the love of engineering. Sounds pretty silly now but thats the way it was.

By the end of our last final of our junior year, we both snapped. Inspired by Carl Franz's shovel and run approach (The Peoples Guide to Mexico), Dan Needham and I were on the road that same evening.

A Taste of San Felipe

Here's the yacht harbor. I'm told that once a year there is a tide swing large enough to flood the harbor (downtown too!) and any boats they've managed to fix they can float out.
Any well packed beach will work for a boat ramp if you have a big enough truck. On this day the swell was big enough to swamp this boat... I wish I had a 4.5 and a bump 'n' jump back then.
I made do with my trusty Hoyle Schwietzer special
Hey, this almost looks like surf sailing! We could even water start.
Dan portrays the well dressed sailor. For work ... ... and for leisure.
The well dressed sailor after a long day at the "office". At low tide hot water bubbled up through the sand ... no kidding. We tried to dig a pool but after several cave ins we just buried ourselves instead.
Once apon a time you didn't need 20 knots of wind to have a good time ... just warm water and a rising sun.
