Our
Founder, Florian Dauenhauer
 |
Born
in North Dakota, Florian Dauenhauer was raised in Wisconsin until
he was 14, when the family moved to Santa Rosa, California. An experimentor
and inventor at heart, he constantly tinkered in his basement building
Vander Graff generators, odd contraptions for changing fools gold
into real gold, and experimental helicopter models to lift heavy loads,
to name just a few of his projects. Florian had a practical and creative
mind, a strong desire to succeed and an indefatigable will. It was
only a matter of time until he made his mark. In 1940 he had his chance.
While working his own hops field in Sacramento, the pickers went on
strike. Faced with the inability to gather the harvest, Florian designed
and built the first successfully operating hops picker. At the following
harvest, when the workers went on strike again, the Dauenhauer Hops
Harvester was put into service and completed the harvest as needed.
Soon word got around about a successfully operating hops picker, and
Dauenhauer Manufacturing was born. As demand grew for the harvester,
Florian realized that the relationship with the farmers was worth
more than the profit from a single machine. Understanding that the
harvester would allow the farm to grow and be profitable, he financed
the sale of the machines himself. These farmers, most of them people
of modest means, usually became successful and they and their communities
thrived. Their success was due in no small part to Florian making
it possible for hop farmers to acquire an expensive machine that no
reasonable bank would lend them the money to buy. The success of Dauenhauer
Manufacturing, Inc. has been possible through innovative thinking
and placing the customer before all other concerns.
