Description
|
Design
a 3-5 page web site. It could be a personal web site, a web site
for a friend, or a site for a company or organization, but not
a project from another web development class you are currently taking.

Requirements
|
1. E-mail me your Project 2 web site
topic. 5 points extra credit. (Due: 9/11 by midnight)
2. Write a design plan that describes the target audience,
purpose, topic and design concept for the site. Please describe
briefly what kind of content (information and images) you plan to
use on the site's pages. Please upload this design plan to your
server as an HTML or PDF file and send me the URL. (Due: 9/18
by midnight)
3. Develop a flowchart (storyboard) that shows the structure and
main pages on the site. Please upload this to your server as an
HTML or PDF file and send me the URL. (Due: 9/18 by midnight)
4. Do rough preliminary layouts in Photoshop. Please upload
your layouts to your server as jpegs or PDF files and send me the
URL. (Due: 9/18 by midnight)

5. Start production on your site redesign:
Your site should:
-
Contain
3-5 pages (more is ok).
-
Demonstrate
the design principles: contrast, alignment, proximity, repetition.
-
Demonstrate
guidelines for design: white space, focal point, direction,
consistency, balance etc.
-
Demonstrate
close attention to readability (there should be at least 4 long
paragraphs of text type).
-
Include
type contrasts and refinements.
-
Show attention
to detail and accuracy (no typos or misspellings).
-
Use a tasteful/appropriate
color scheme
-
Contain
attractive graphics that are handled in a consistent manner
-
Demonstrate
clear and consistent navigation
-
Have a clean
and visually appealing layout
-
Be simple
(with a focus on design not advanced web techniques)

Procedure
|
You should do the following:
-
First, decide on the topic for your site and begin to gather
the content. E-mail me your web site topic by 9/11
(5 points extra credit).

Next, write the design plan (see details above) due 9/18.
(5 points).
-
Develop the flowchart (storyboard) (see above) due 9/18.
(5 points).

Develop preliminary layout ideas for the design of the pages
in Photoshop due 9/18. (5 points).
-
Create a color palette for the site (Assignment 7).
-
Work on design production (graphics and web pages) during weeks
5, 6, 7.
-
Develop graphics, background, buttons etc.
-
Remember that you will be graded on design NOT technical skills
(e.g. fancy animation, java etc.).

Keep it simple!

Upload the site and e-mail me the URL kthornley@santarosa.edu.
Due: 10/16 by midnight.

Write the
presentation of your web site for the class (10 points):
Project 2 presentation: Write a written presentation about your
Project 2 web site design (about 400-500 words) and submit it to the class FORUM. Refer to the presentations from previous semesters
provided in the link below for ideas about what to write and how much
to write. You can talk about the design and planning process, color
and layout choices, typography and readability considerations, what you
did to follow the design principles, original or creative design ideas,
changes you made along the way, things you would still like to change,
what you like or dislike about the final design etc. You must
include the URL to your Project 2 web site at the top of your presentation.

Completed design (100 points) (Due Sunday, October 16th by midnight).
No late projects or presentations will be accepted.
