APGR72 Week 5 Reading and Homework

On this page you'll find all the homework for a specific week. For an overview of homework for the entire course, please check the "calendar" page. Reading assignments are an important part of the week's study so please make sure you complete them. The weekly quiz may well contain questions based on the week's reading assignments.

Reading due this week:
1. Beaird: Chapter 2 (pages 43-77)
2. Series of short articles on color read the sequence of color articles (under the COLOR heading on the right hand side of the page) at Newark 1.

Homework:
Assignment 6 -- type contrast with color: Create a dynamic type contrast using TWO words (you can select words that imply contrast if you want, e.g., "Slumdog Millionnaire"). You should apply what you learned about fonts last week and color this week to these contrasting words. (Note: you might want to use this assignment to work on a contrasting top banner title for your Project 2 site if your site name uses more than one word.) Use either Photoshop/Illustrator/Fireworks and make the design at least 600 pixels wide. Save as a jpeg/gif.

Remember that to create a visual contrast, the two words must look different from each other (different sizes, fonts, boldness, colors, directions etc.) but still be visually related (placement, overlapping, one common color etc.). Remember to concentrate on the TYPE CONTRAST... don't use a fancy background, strange text shapes or any images and the COLOR CONTRAST. This web site page has a logo in the top banner that demonstrates a good example of type contrast: http://www.hd-live.co.uk/

Assignment 7 -- Photo Color Palette for Project 2:
1. First read over what the designer at Newark 1 has to say about how he finds inspiration for web color palettes: http://www.newark1.com/.

2. Look at the sample assignment:
        Sample Assignment 7

3. Scan or download a COLOR photo (with attractive colors) that you would like to use in your final project. Make sure the photo is at least 600 pixels either wide or high. You can use the following site to find a suitable photo or you can use one of your own:
http://morguefile.com/
This site has a huge archive of free high resolution digital stock photography. The photos are post-production materials that are now for public use.

4. Open the photo in Photoshop (resize so it fits on your homework assignment page -- BUT it must be at least 600 pixels wide or high. Make sure it's 72 dpi!).

5. Use the eyedropper tool to select suitable colors from the photo (see sample assignment below). These should create a color palette that works well together. Don't pick colors that clash or don't have enough contrast with each other. You'll need:
         A page background color
         A heading color
         A text color
         An active link color
A visited link color (this could be the same as the heading if you want)

6. Create a sample page in Photoshop that includes the photo at the top, the background filled with your chosen color, a large heading in your chosen color (shown at a suitable size/font for a heading), a paragraph of text underneath the heading in your chosen text color and then samples of active and visited links. (Check the sample assignment below to make sure you are doing this correctly):

7. Make color swatches for each of these colors and provide the HEX numbers for them. (A quick way to do this is to create a layer, then use the marquee tool to define a square, then use Edit > Fill to fill the square with the color you selected using the eyedropper -- or use another method if you prefer.) You can find the HEX numbers in the Color Palette (click on the foreground color at the bottom of the toolbar to launch it). Save your file as a jpeg.
Note: your palette colors do not have to be web safe.

8. Lastly, under the jpeg, describe what type of color scheme you have created in the palette: analogous, complementary, split complementary or triadic. (Look at the lecture again if you're unsure!)

Please upload this assignment to your server and send me the URL in an e-mail (kthornley@santarosa.edu) with the subject line: Assignment 7 your_name.
