SUPPER

The hunt'd been hard and the ride long
It was dark and shoes just clicked a song
O'er the rocks the sparks would fly
With nothin' but clouds and darkness in the sky

Through the timber we made our way
Them horses walked thinkin only of hay
Clinchin' my jaw and suckin on a dip
In my saddle I held a firm grip

Cause the branches my coat got torn
So dark I couldn't see my horn
We were getting' close not more than a mile
The thought of supper brought me a smile

It ain't fancy but our camp's got what ya need
Cause there's bears the food hangs from a tree
A single burner stove and a couple of pots
Water and freeze dried food's normally what we got

This night was special, a mid-week treat
A big hot meal, it'd be so sweet
The stew was a simmerin' atop the flame
Like all other nights, this one ain't the same

With horses fed and put away
On a high line out of the fray
We sat on a stump and stirred the stew
In the night's air, a glorious brew

But it was only one hasty move
I watched that pot spill with all our stew
On the fire our supper just sizzled
Just about then it started to drizzle

I picked what I could from out the ash
It was still our stew not totally trash
We headed to our tent that served as our hut
That night we slept with an empty gut
