What's Going on Upstairs?
New elliptical trainer...Feldenkrais classes...Circuit Training...Yoga...The
mezzanine offers much more than a pile of magazines and good views. Our
new Precor elliptical trainer arrived in early May to beef up the gym's
aerobic equipment. The circular motion takes some getting used to, but
it's a great non-impact workout that won't stress the knees...Climber
Ron Klinger is now offering weekly Feldenkrais classes. This movement
and awareness technique can help with everything from back pain to climbing
5.12. Class is every Tuesday at 5:30, and is only $3 for members. . .
Circuit Training has an energetic group of disciples, and there's room
for more! Mondays and Wednesdays, 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. with uber-trainer Jack
Dixon. $35 monthly for 2x/week, $20 monthly for 1x/week, $7 drop in....Yoga
is at the top of our wish list for new classes at Vertex. If you know
of a good yoga teacher looking for a cool space to hold classes, please
talk to Mark.
Get Out More
Join us outside for a day on the rocks, Sunday, May 21 at Goat
Rock. We'll have top-ropes set, show off killer boulder problems,
discuss anchors and maybe even do a little leading. Best of
all, its Free for our members and their friends. If you're a
veteran climber, show up anyway to hang out, meet new partners
and criticize Seth's anchors. Meet at the gym at 10 a.m. to
carpool or just show up at the crags |

they actually belong to him) to build a deck at his Berkeley
house...Local police have reported an alleged melee started
by Katie, involving airborne chocolate cake...Achoo! Aaron made
the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle in a story Janet
did on allergies...ex-staffer Dave Wallach is a video star --
Catch him on "West Coast Pimps" (No, it's not X-rated)...Greg

Team
Vertex Cranks
Vertex held the first competition of the 2000 Junior Competition
Climbing Association 2000 season. Fifty kids participated, and
while some of them could really crank, no one managed to redpoint
the hardest route a sick 5.12d on the lead arch. Kevin Jorgeson
placed third in the men's 16-17 division (and first at the Pacific
Edge comp March 25, second at RockSport on April 1). Paris Tolmachoff
came in second in the men's 11 and under division (and 1st at
the Pacific Edge comp)... Congrats also to Katie Flohr, Craig
Emerson and Vicki Udall for climbing hard. For those too old
to compete, enjoy the stellar competition routes set by Dave
Wallach, Eric Hewit, Bernard Guest, Ian Riedel, Troy Woodard,
David Kokel and Andy Wallach. |

As the Hold Spins a.k.a. All My Carabiners a.k.a. Days
of Our Climbs...
Greg Miller broke his wrist mountain biking, but a cast didn't stop
him from climbing 5.10...Steve Marlowe spent a month skiing, working his
way south from Whistler to Tahoe...Katyushka Axt can't quite believe she
has a son about to graduate from high school...Mea Culpa: The Super Lap
record is not held by Andy Wallach as previously reported, but by Mr.
Mega-Biceps Brian White; at last count he was up to six... Grrrrrrrrrrr!
Vertex can no longer allow dogs in the gym. Please tie your pooch up outside.
Thanks.
