What is it about the town of Arcata, California that prompted Time Magazine to name it one of the top four American cities to retire in, and why has is been called the “Most Enlightened City in California?” With the additional label of “Green Capital of America” that Arcata was branded with by the international media, sustainable development practitioners may well be interested in learning some lessons from this place that has taken sustainable development seriously for over 30 years.
Featuring the first rural recycling center in America (over 30 years old), Arcata has not only one of the highest recycling rates in the country, but it has spun off a $2 million per year recycling business that took the local waste product of used glass and turned it into a local resource by making artisan plates, bowls and glass building blocks. This enterprise, Fire and Light, has also brought a significant number of jobs to the community.
Further innovative projects that will be featured on the study tour include an ecological co-housing project, a community “bike library”, a City owned educational organic farm that provides food security and revenue to Arcata residents, ecological features of a new Community Centre, and an “off the grid” model home of ecological sustainability. Also on the agenda is the cutting-edge Schatz Energy Research Center, where municipal energy projects and programmes will be explained, including participation in the international Cities for Climate Protection campaign co-ordinated by ICLEI.
Furthermore, many of Arcata’s projects end up saving the City money. For example, the former landfill has been turned into an ecological waste water treatment plant that doubles as a wildlife sanctuary and tourist attraction, bringing revenue from eco-tourists into the local coffers. Mayor Bob Ornelas stated about the study tour of Arcata, “Let me extend my personal invitation and guarantee you will not be disappointed.”
