Bob Furguson enjoys building do much he decided to design his own.
Here is what he has to say about it"
I've completed three kits in the past year or two and I've enjoyed
building so much I decided to try design and building. I read Andy Lennon's book Basics or
R/C Model Aircraft Design and found it full of useful info. I've got to say that at first
glance the book is rather intimidating; it's full of graphs, tables, diagrams and formulas
which baffled me on first reading. I had to study the book like a school text and after
re-reading about 3-4 times I got enough info and ideas to try my first design. This first
project is modeled after a very popular ultra-light/experimental design-- the high wing
pusher.
The wing span
is 87 inches, wing area about 1380 square inches. The first pic shows the foam core wing--
I wasted two sheets of foam before I learned to cut a good core!! The tail boom is a
wrapping paper tube reinforced with light fiberglass and epoxy. The fuse is light (Poplar)
ply and the final weight is about 15 pounds. The engine is a Saito 91. I still have some
details to work out--CG location and fuel system -- but hope to have the plane ready to
test fly in a month.
For any WCF members who are interested-- I need a "test pilot", since I haven't
yet learned to fly myself and my son, Scott, is still a novice. Also, maybe we should
start a betting pool--"Will it fly or not, and if it does get off the ground, how
long will it last??!" Bob Ferguson
