guillaume on the escalator at the pompidou center. [ 30 ] the pompidou center rises like a big unfinished six story box amid a dense older paris neighborhood. we ascended to the musee du art moderne via the exterior escalator enclosed in must have been formerly a clear plastic tube years ago when it was new. the escalator immediately struck me as an incredible public safety hazzard entirely inadequate to provide rapid egress for crowds from the building in an emergency. the escalators were narrow and slow. there were numerous galleries in the museum. it did not take us long to stroll through the museum because of the average quality of the modern works on exhibit. there were a couple of gems that stood out. of course it was a tough act for the pompidou since we had already been to the rodin and picasso museums earlier in the day. clearly we had seen better only a few hours earlier.
