Recommended Questions

Refer to the client's goals when you create the questions which measure the success of the site. The questions can be asked in an open ended format or with answers provided for a "multiple choice" selection. Listed below are examples of both. I recommend you adopt one format of questions and stick with it.

Open ended questions
What is the overall tone and feel of the site.

What is the site about

What was your first impression of the opening screen?

Where did you first click?

Did you find the site easy to navigate?

Were the pages interesting? Why or why not?

What did you like best about the site?

What suggestions for improvement do you have?

Were there any links that did not work, images that did not load, typos?

Could you find the online form to join the organization? Describe how you found this item.

Did you find the calendar, was it easy to read?

Questions with answers provided
Please use the following scale to evaluate the Web site:
Strongly Agree (SA), Agree (A), Disagree (D), and Strongly Disagree (SD).

In this survey format, the test-run participant circles the appropriate choice.

1. The overall tone and feel of the site is peaceful and calm. SA A D SD
2. The first impression of the opening screen was well organized and easy to use? SA A D SD
4. The web site was easy to navigate. SA A D SD
5. The web pages were interesting. SA A D SD
6. The web site kept my interest. SA A D SD
7. The visuals were appropriate. SA A D SD
8. The visuals helped me learn. SA A D SD
9. The organization and sequencing of information was appropriate. SA A D SD
10. The amount of interaction was appropriate. SA A D SD
After you have collected the surveys, you assign points to each of the choices (SA=4, A=3, D=2, SD=1), and calculate an average score for each item. For example:

10 participants answer
item #1
4 circle SA4 x 4 = 16
3 circle A3 x 3 = 9
2 circle D2 x 2 = 4
1 circle SD1 x 1 = 1
total: 30
average: 30 / 10 = 3

The average score for item #1 is 3. This tells you that, in general, participants agreed with the item.

One of the drawbacks to using a survey like this is that you may not get information which is specific enough to help you "fix" any identified problem areas. You may want to encourage specific comments by leaving enough space between items for the participants to write comments or by asking for specific suggestions for improving the product.
