I usually prefer to work alone and not have to deal with people, so I think the most valuable lesson I learned was how to communicate well while working on a team.

The most valuable lessons that I learned were to expect the unexpected, to really listen to the client and try to feel their vision and personality. Also the importance of testing and making adjustments from comments accordingly, a fresh set of eyes is invaluable after being so close within a project. Also the importance of imagery in a site and being able to convey the message in fewer words, perhaps through bullet points or pull quotes. Evaluating our site and all of the other sites in a group setting with a range of professional opinions was also incredibly insightful as well as extremely valuable. I learn many lessons that I will reflect upon in my future endeavors.

As the designer you stand between the client and the content developer who produces the site. I learned that if I get to know the client, their mission, the audience and the "product" I can design a site and templates that allows two content developers with different personalities to produce a unified site that looks as though one person did it all and pleases the client.

Realizing that the team interaction is an important aspect of the work dynamics of creating a site: I learned how patient, supportive and adaptable one must be when working on a project (such as a web site) that requires alot of team collaboration. I have been accustomed to working solo and had to refocus my typeA-itis tendencies to orienting to the other team members and try to communicate in a patient and supportive manner.

I've learned many valuable lessons while taking these classes. The most valuable is that of testing of the site with typical users. I learned that these users bring their own browser habits which are different from mine. Other lessons I learned are the importance of planning and documentation during all phases of the site development. These include the Web Proposal, Communication Plan, Testing, and the Bid. I also learned about working on a team, the importance of time-management, and the necessity of frequent and through communications with both the client and the team.

I've learned to work in group sharing responsibilities, the cycle of life developing a site from blue copy and activities that we have to develop in order to achieve the final product and requirements based on the client request and concerns.

I learned to keep myself organized, when to just let unimportant things drop and that working in a group is difficult but that it is nice to have the help.

I have learned so much from this cless! I think the most valuble is the real client interaction. I like that I had to handle challanges and gained experiances i would not have learned in just a classroom setting. Also the skills taught about the organization and flow of client interaction where really helpful.

The designer's vision and comprehension of the site details are critical to a successful and trouble-free project. Clear communication of the design and deliverables early on is the way to ensure that the designer's vision and comprehension translates into a new or revised website that is satisfactory to the client. That's the impression I got, and the lesson I will carry forward.

I learned the value of having a competent project manager who keeps track of what's due when and insisting on deadlines for getting it done on time. I would have been lost without the PM keeping track of the time budget and putting the class site together. I also learned that it's imperative to correctly access the skills of the team members and to the scope the project from the outset to match the skillsets of the designer and content developers to avoid constantly thrashing the template that doesn't work and thus constantly having to rework the content. I also learned that when you work on a team you have to pick your battles and let the little stuff go.

I learned to communicate very well with the client concerning the content for the site. I also learned how to do some very advanced things in Wordpress. I find this to be very helpful considering that SRJC will be offering php online in the fall (and I will be taking it!). Furthermore, working with a team on this project has been a very rewarding experience for me, as well as providing good practical experience. I really learned "never to give up" when presented with a coding problem, there is almost always a solution (ask Google!).

In my professional life as a software engineer I often worked as a project manager, organizing tasks and team members and making sure everything got done. As Content Developer in this course my role was different. I had to concentrate on just my own tasks, making sure I completed my own job and not worrying as much about those responsibilities that belonged to my teammates. That was a bit different, but rewarding in its way. I appreciated leaving the site design to someone with better skills in that area than I have, for example!

As a project manager I learned to be sure to follow up with the team, and that not everyone is as organized as I am. The PM is an important part, someone needs to be the one to keep their eye on the overall project, deliverables, and time table. We had a good team and we all worked very hard.

As the PM I realize there will always be differences within a team environment. We all have different ways of doing tasks as well as ways of communicating. For example, what one individual appreciates as being helpful another would see as intrusion. With all these differences we still found a way to be successful and met all of the deadlines as well as producing a site that the client was happy with. The end result speaks for itself.

I learned the value in organizing and documenting everything. I've always done things very laxly with clients and definitely never made any proposals or manuals. I've appreciated the knowledge of how to make these different documents and the process by which to work with a client.

I learned a lot from this class. I never knew the amount of details that went into making a website. Each of the detailed parts (such as storyboard, deliverables, shell-site) are all quite important to the project as a whole. I learned about our team. Who they were and how they fit into the project. I learned patience, when I was gnawing at the bit to start my part or when waiting for others to finish their parts. I loved the interaction between the team and the client. Every time we met things always went smoothly. I was genuinely surprised how well everything came together at the end. That made the class worthwhile.

Project Management is like, being in a position to be the mirror, that reflects back the essence of the project, in it's perfect state, and from that place of vision, to be able to roll back a sort of time line, like the hands of a clock turning backwards, and to graciously allow responsibilities settle upon their rightful place- ever mindful of my place as keeper of the clock, as it ticks ever surely to its vision in the mirror..

I learned how important communication is when working with other people, and I learned how much responsibility goes into working on a team even if you're not the project manager
Special Thanks to Whitney Snelling from 3773 for sharing what theylearned in the class
Even though I know communication is key, it still hard to keep that value up and running. Between all the different people we had involved on the client site, and then back to team mates, it was hard to keep track and make sure everyone was on the same page. I think this class was most difficult for me because, like Linda has said. Its not a typical class. And working full time, and living on your own definately made that statement true. I learned to not get so overwhelmed with everything. To slow down, take a breath and then go for it. I think I would have made less mistakes, and kept the communication level as high as I wanted it to be.

Being the PM for the SCMAA team has taught me a lot. I've learned how important it is to plan, and have back-up plans. I've learned that I can handle more stress than I thought I could. I've gained some very useful leadership skills for the future.

The team MUST have a Product Manager. The Designer should not be allowed to slip so far behind. This creates unneeded and unwanted stress on the rest of the group. The Designer was a finger pointer and should realize that three fingers are pointed at her while she is accusing others. I learned how to embed YouTube videos WITH the cool player.

I learned the benefits of working with a team. The key for the success in this class is to communicate often!!! I learned a lot more about HTML and Dreamweaver here than in their classes.

As a reluctant designer, I have found that when I go with my instincts, and do what I know how to do best, that my designs, my creations, are perfectly acceptable. I make no claim to be an artist, but I have learned the principals of color and layout to make a visually acceptable and un-encumbering user interface. When I try to do something "artsy" it does not turn out nearly as well as when I stick with a simple design.

I learned about creating a design from scratch for a client. This client had an existing website with absolutely no character. So, it was easy to improve upon this. I offered 2 design choices. They chose one with a tie-dye background and a flexible width. I learned not to spend so much time in designing before asking alot of questions.

The most valuable lesson that I learned during this course was not to assume anything in communications. If you want to be sure something is done, or that someone is taking responsiblity for it, ask straight out. On the flip side of that coin, keep in touch, even if it's just to say you're swamped or sick or whatever.
Special Thanks to Dax Talbert from 3773 for sharing what theylearned in the class
I would say the most valuable is, you have to keep things extremely organized. You have to be thinking clearly all the time and not let the stress get to you. You have to be great at communication. If you aren't, you won't make it in this type of career. If you don't communicate with your client from the beginning, then you aren't even going to get anywhere. You have to get along with people. You have to be a team player. If your not, then once again, don't even think you can do this type of job. You work with so many people then you think. Get things done by the deadline. You can't be late, because if your late, then your making another person late at what they need to be doing. Once one person is late, then everyone else is late, because many people depend on you to get your part of the project done, before they can even start on theirs. Expect to work long hours, especially during crunch time. If you aren't ready to put long hours in, then once again this isn't a job for you. I would say those are the main things, but I'm sure there are plenty more. :)

The old adage, "different strokes for different folks, come to mind when working in a team environment. We all have different ways we learn, different ways we do identical tasks, different values, and different ways of communicating. With all these differences we still find a way to be successful and proud of the job we accomplished together. A valuable lesson I take away from this project is ask for help even when I think it is my responsibility to already have the knowledge.
Special Thanks to Susanne Deiss-Costanzo from 3773 for sharing what theylearned in the class
The most valuable lesson I learned in this class about website development is how important it is to spell everything concerning the process and deliverable out to the nth degree, not only with your client but also with your teammates. Unless you have a road map that clearly puts everyone on the same track, pulling in the same direction--sharing the same vision, timeline, and limits--you are bound to head for rough turf.
Special Thanks to Richard Von Hoogenstyn from 3773 for sharing what theylearned in the class
I learned how important it is to keep in communication with your team. They are there to help you and for you to help them. The only way they can do that though is if you keep them involved on what is going on.
Special Thanks to Joseph Humphrey from 3773 for sharing what theylearned in the class
I learned that different people have different work styles, and getting them to work together can be difficult. It seems that content developers and designers have two different approaches to this sort of project, and communication and deadlines are different to each. You have to be prepared for the unexpected and go with what you get.

A team comprised of like minded persons who share a creative passion and strong work ethic is a stimulating and rewarding experience. That being said, as the designer I feel the ultimate responsibility to deliver a final product that minimally satisfies but ideally exceeds the expectations of the client.

Get a grip on the homework and the vision of what the site will be early in the semester. The devil is in the details. There are more forms and reports in this course so as to make the IRS jealous. They're not difficult, you just have to know they're coming and then just do them. As for the vision, try to make an effort early on that the vision is shared by your team and your client. If things are working, say so, if they're not, say so; don't wait, co-mmun-i-cate...

I learned that communication is a highly regarded skill to have. When working within a group, especially with people you don't know, it is important to set standards and rules. We had no problems with getting back to each other with emails, but it is important that the whole team is on the same page. This class was a roller coaster, involving a lot of time, energy, and stress! But it was worth it to see the client's face when she saw the finished project. Hang in there!

First, I thought I had already filled this out...but I guess not? I think one of the biggest things I learned was how to approach a web development project as a team effort: what the various tasks are and how they fold together.

I learned to create a good framework for the project. Some of the best lessons I learned was from listening to some of the freelance guests on the last day. Getting content first before getting bogged down with the design.
Special Thanks to Travis Carpenter from 3797 for sharing what theylearned in the class
The most valueable lesson I learned was to set up a basically strong communications network. Which means having the ability to call, meet, or e-mail anyone involved in the project when neccessary. Its too easy to get seperated by distance, phone problems, or e-mail messages not arriving when neccessary. Having all three working most of the time is of the utmost importance.

There were several things that I learned from this class. The planning phase is extremly important. It is also important to have good communication with your team. I learned to expect to have to make changes and allow for time to do so. However, I feel the most important is to take advantage of your planning phase. If you plan on to have sections be SSI it can eliminat extra work for you while you make edits to the web site.

This is a great class! Real-world experience working in a team environment with a real live client. If you are used to working individually it might be challenging letting go and working as a member of a team. Constant communication with your team is important. Stay on top of deadlines. Have fun, it's a great experience!
