Learn how to set up an interesting website for myself and other family members. I would like to set up a web site which serves as a "blog" site for exchanging ideas about parenting and education, which have been my two primary interests and activities for the last 30+ years. Many people have suggested to my wife and myself that we start some sort of consultation activity/business relating to parenting and education, since we have somehow managed to raise three unusually well-adjusted and highly successful children, even though we ourselves border on the mediocre to all appearances.

Computer experience -
Mac user since 1984 W/ Mac Plus, then all succeeding generations. Now have a MacBook with OS 10.4 and a Hewlett Packard Pavilion dv6700. Have used Synmantec utilities for maintenance purposes. I am familiar with wordpprocessing software, Powerpoint (and Keynote, the Mac version), Excel, and various databases over the years. I actually learned to set up a web site using html from a former student of mine in the mid-1990s but have forgotten everything.

Hobbies & Interests
I am a retired independent study and mathematics teacher, primarily at the junior high level. I like hiking, bicycle riding, and taking classes like this and welding, which I am also learning this semester. I have three grown children, the eldest of whom is a lawyer who works here and flies to his home in Hollywood where his wife is an aspiring actress and director; the second of whom is a military policeman in the Marines currently stationed at Camp Pendleton in San Diego with his wife and my first granddaughter; and the youngest of whom is a junior at the University of Chicago majoring in both International Studies and Russian.

My best accomplishment was probably when I created and curated an environmental art exhibit that lasted 3 years called "Moved by the Land". It brought together over 150 artists, politicians, environmental orgs., musicians and poets to address the issues of growth and change in our county. Would love to do something like that again or work more with other artists getting their art online, etc. I help artists with their orig. work - in Photo Shop for their prints, calendars, etc. I am a fine artist. My medium is acrylic - rep. and abstract art are favorites. I volunteered as an art teacher's assistant and also worked in the public schools at all levels as a volunteer. Ultimately, i really want to know how to program for the reason that I think that some of the ideas i have locked up in my head would make great games. I got a little bit behind with the assignments and I think I thought learning HTML would be a lot easier than it actually was! The first 2 weeks are easy and then.. it get harder. Well, eventhough I failed the class, I LOVED the class and I found the coding and everything so interesting. I am currently working at an accounting firm but would like to change careers and do something more in a marketing/web design area. Last year my manager quit without notice. I had no access to my business website. I had no idea what any passwords were or any way to contact the company that hosted my website. Whenever I had previously visited the website I told the manager it looked good and that is the extent of my website knowledge. Hopefully, this class willinform me on what is going on in my website and perhaps I can service and update it myself. I suppose it is time for me to enter the web age.

I have used accounting software since the 80's and small business programs. I have always looked at computers as a tool to be used, not played with. I guess I have had the same approach to internet, cell phone use and other computer applications. However, I find myself isolated from my younger relatives and associates.

I love doing video type tuff. I'm currently learning Final Cut Pro which is a video editing program. I've working with different bands from the Northern California for around 8 years as a booking agent and manager. On the tours I always documented them with my video camera. I eventually got pretty good and took it to the next level and bought a Mac and used Imovie to edit the footage. That was a great way to learn the basics of digital editing but I had to move up to Final Cut Pro.

I've been working with computers since 1986. Mac and Windows and DOS. A little Linux. Some network support, desktop support, worked as a software technical support person for 5 years for a Visual FoxPro based multi-relational database customizable module software package. Then began working with SQL in the same package as it was developed to include SQL databases. Taught computer lab to elementary school for 2 1/2 years and developed curriculum for same. Was the support person for all classroom computers. Prior to that I worked at a university on the east coast and was the person who was given the responsibility of getting all the professors hooked into the network - when IP addresses first became available outside of the government...and we were still on a mainframe system. Taught adults how to use the Microsoft Office Suite in a job retraining program in Marin county. Computer graphic design and layout programs and press and prepress work. OS support.

Went to do some designing for my own businesses and found that since I never kept up with the changes from HTML 4.0 that I was way behind an a bit clueless about implementing xhtml and css. Ummm, extensive. Geek who used to be a technogy lead workshop instructor and even taught html 3.0 and html 4.0 on unix systems to faculty/staff and some students at CSU, Chico. I left that world and became a software engineer who never really needed to do any web-work other than server-side testing of capacity and load. Although I no longer sift through code for a living I do manage a database as well as use my PC as an integral part of all activities in my daily life. I am comfortable on all platforms including Linux, Unix and Solaris. Ex Mac-head turned PC freak in early to mid-90's.
