We had punch card computer in my high school, that was in 1970 when I first programmed a computer. A few yeas later, my friend who worked at Compuserve was able to get us online. This was the very beginning of the internet. At the time, there was only one public chat room, how many are there now, Google - about 33,500,000 for chat rooms... I moved to California in 1987 because I wanted to learn more about computers and knew silicon valley offered the best environment for innovation. My first software development was "Doc In The Box", it was the first time computers had been used to conduct psych testing. How many are there now, Google - about 2,540,000 for psych testing... Computers are constantly changing so when I decided to move to Sonoma county, the Santa Rosa Junior College was a key consideration. It is the best place for continuing education.

Last semester I completed CS 50.11A & CS 50.11B, so I thought it was only natural to finish off with CS 50.11C this semester while the information was still fresh in my mind. I have always been interested in learning how web pages work and how they were created, and I really loved the last two classes. I had the most fun with the CSS because of the styling aspects and I would like to further my knowledge of it.

This class is one of four required to earn certification for HTML Web Developer. I'm exploring one final career change, and since I love computers, the internet, design and the potential of web sites, it made sense to check out the world of web development.

Computer experience -
For most of my working life, I've used computers. My working life started way way way back in the days of huge main frames that took up an entire room. Computers evolved over my twenty years in the airline industry, where I used them to book flight reservations, order meal service, handle delays and cancellations, print boarding passes, assign seats, etc. My second career was visual design in a retail setting. I used the computer for locating inventory, checking sales, record-keeping, inter-office communication, and many other purposes. In the mid-ninties I went back to college to earn a BA, and used the computer for research, writing papers, searching databases, etc. A couple of years ago I took 12 weeks of lessons in MS Word, Access and Excel, and last semester I took CS50.11A and B.

Nothing I would call hobbies, but I do love to read, write, and follow politics. I've volunteered for three non-profits in the past five years, play "activist" in a variety of issues, and am currently using my visual design skills to help my daughter upgrade the decor in her funky Montreal rental bathroom.

Until I took HTML last year (in 2009), one of the web pages on our site was titled, "What's new in 2002!". I wanted to learn how to fix our site and make other websites. We also didn't want to hire an expensive outside web page designer to maintain and update our website. So, here I am. Dave Harden said CSS is a must, and now I'm thinking of getting certified. I enjoy making changes to web sites and seeing them on the web seconds later.

Computer experience -
I took some computer classes here at the JC a million years ago; Cobol, Fortran, Pascal, machine code. Now, rather than opening the machine to install a piece of hardware, I'm a total user. I do spreadsheets, for work, with excel. I use quickbooks to pay the bills. I use PhotoShop to edit and print pictures. And now with my new 500GB laptop, I'm ready for anything.

I'm a picture taking nut, especially with my kids. I have four kids, three are out of the house, two are married and I have two grandsons. Isabel and I have had 28 foster kids over the last ten years. Last month two of our foster boys moved out to be closer to their family so now, we just have our own 12 year old daughter and our 18 year old foster daughter, who we've had for eight years. I took an html/css course during my senior year of high school (5 years ago) and that is what sparked my interest in pursuing computer sciences as a career. After a few years of goofing off, I've settled down and continued my formal computer education. I took 50.11A/B with Carolyn Massel last semester, along with 70.11A (Photoshop1) with Donald Laird. Now I'm ready and excited to move forward with this class, along with 71.11A/B (Illustrator) and 50.25 (Electronic Portfolio). As I said earlier, I'm also teaching myself C, Objective-C and Cocoa, to create iphone/ipod applications.

Seriously though, I've been working with Windows since 3.1, and I have a Macintosh SE30 in my basement. I have my own custom PC business and I work at as a Tech Specialist. Well I play a lot of video games. I should say PC games cause these days people are all about the consoles. The last console I bought was a Panasonic 3DO. Never hear of it? Great now I feel even older. I read quite a bit also, mostly weird crap nobody likes except me. No, I haven't read Harry Potter, no I don't care to, no I don't want to borrow your copy. Or any Dan Brown books. I'll burn them for warmth but that's about the extent of their use to me. If I sound like a crotchety mean person it's just because I haven't had my coffee yet. Or my cocaine. They go together real nicely like gasoline and a cigarette. Did you know that a cigarette doesn't burn hot enough to ignite gasoline and if you throw a lit stogie into a puddle of gas, it will just go out? Me neither. Now I have gas all over the place, I'm out of cigarettes, and I've still got a dead body and a bunch of fire insurance I don't need. Seriously though, I'm pretty normal. I swear.

When the class finished I made it out alive with an A and decided that I was going to take Part C because even though at times B was a little difficult it was still fun to learn.
