Had a fun time stylin' up the homepage - good exercise to recall lessons from CS50.11B.
I chose to do live option 2 for the challenge, and am following the lessons with option 1 to re-enforce the topics. All samples and live pages validated well, except the HTML for the "Business of Web Design" page. I figure all the errors there will shake out as the class progresses. My CSS linked file validated OK.
I had a bizarre experience HTML-validating my Homework page. Clicking the button lead it to tell me it couldn't validate it many times, then suddenly the validation worked and was successful. Huh? Anyway, it seems to be valid.

Each page's css does not completely validate because i used the new feature for rounded borders which is not fully supported yet. there are a total of 4 validation errors for each which are
18 #nav Property -moz-border-radius doesn't exist : 15px
19 #nav Property border-radius doesn't exist in CSS level 2.1 but exists in [css3] : 15px
31 #wrapper Property -moz-border-radius doesn't exist : 15px
32 #wrapper Property border-radius doesn't exist in CSS level 2.1 but exists in [css3] : 15px
other than that everything checks out.

I took Kathy Thornley's Principles of Screen Design (APGR 72) last semester. She believes Times Roman is an awful choice for most browsers' default typeface ... and I agree! So I'm doing some of my homework pages in Georgia, which is much better but not ideal.

I'm still slogging through everything. It took me many sessions of just sitting through the lessons and reading the assignment page to understand what was going on at all. I had a really hard time figuring out where to start or making sense of what we're supposed to have finished. I'm not great with massive walls of text that have conflicting content. The structure of the class is going to take some getting used to.

on validating selector-sampler, I got a warning I don't understand: The character encoding specified in the HTTP header (utf-8) is different from the value in the element (iso-8859-1). I will use the value from the HTTP header (utf-8) for this validation.
I found the value in the element in my code, but couldn't figure out where the "encoding specified in the HTTP header (utf-8)" was.
Noticed that the samples you provided had a variety of html standards.
homework.html - xhtml transitional
live-site.html - html 5
selector-sampler.html - xhtml strict
cascade-sampler.html - xhtml strict
I couldn't remember whether we had a standard for this class or not.

Also, sorry this was a little late, but my internet at home shut down a couple of days ago and I've been trying to work around, I hope you still accept it being that it is the day of. :)

I am submitting my directory without a page because I am trying to get partial credit for late work while in a reasonable way. I don't have a page, so this takes the viewer at the time of this submission (9/19) to my directory. I enjoyed putting the selector rules definitions in my own words, and appreciate the power of CSS. Now to harness it and catch up.

I am having some problems I have been working hard on the homework but for some reason I cannot get it to show up on the student server site www... However using the FTP software it shows that the files are on the server so I am wondering why they are not showing up live on the site. I have been validating the files via uploads using W3C and checking it that way but if you could help out I am not wanting to get late on this weeks assignment last week I was struggling understanding some of the code. Pleas respond asap. If I need to do anything I can if you need to reset the server for me go ahead that is fine I have the backups on my comp. Thanks.

Whew! Just made it! This was quite a task because the first week I was away, and the second week was spent preparing to teach my classes. So, squeezing in time for this was a bit frustrating, but the end result was fun! I'll admit, for the selector sampler I ended up creating a css file because I wanted to see the actual results without embedding the styles. Some interesting results.
Hopefully things will calm down enough for the rest of the class time.

I found this assignment to be a bit challenging, because I was a tad rusty on many of the basic HTML and CSS concepts I learned last semester and did absolutely nothing with over the summer!
However, breaking my study and homework sessions into several manageable chunks helped greatly. So did thoroughly reading the assignment several times and highlighting the requirements to check off as I did them...hopefully I completed everything correctly, I guess we will see!

Everything validated except the CSS for the selector sample. I have 4 errors that say:
Unknown pseudo-element or pseudo-class :nth-child
49
Unknown pseudo-element or pseudo-class :nth-of-type 51
Unknown pseudo-element or pseudo-class :nth-last-child 53
Unknown pseudo-element or pseudo-class :nth-last-of-type
Is it maybe because Moz is not able to identify them because they are new, or did I make a mistake?
Anyways, I had alot of fun with this and really learned alot of cool things:)

I learned a lot from reading the book; however, I believe the exercises tied it all together for me, especially the Selector Sampler. I was required to revisit the information, which by the time I was finished the reading I was totally overwhelmed. Yes, it was a lot of work to accomplish but well worth the time.

Like a few of the other students, I found the description for this homework assignment somewhat confusing. I originally put together this page:
http://student.santarosa.edu/~akirchne/CSS_5011C/index.html but then realized this type of page was too advanced for what was assigned.
I'm not sure about the other students, but I think the issue for me may be that I have had many html/css related classes since 50.11A & B and I assumed too high a level, beyond the basic pages we are now creating.
I wonder if in the future it may help to remind students that this class is intended to follow the first html classes and that whatever you have learned in the meanwhile may not be relevant just yet.
While not quite complete yet, I hope in the end, I did achieve what you were looking for in this first assignment.
Thanks, Annette

Here is a list of steps you can used if you still having trouble to do your homework.
1st GO TO THE ASSIGNMENT PAGE AND ON THE LINKS OF THE CSS LESSONS CLICK ON { CSS homework explanation page }
2nd I REALY RECOMMEND YOU PRINT THAT PAGE.
3RD START BY STEPS FOUR, SEVEN, TWELVE, AND SIXTEEN ARE THE HOMEWORK PART OF IT. THE REST IS JUST EXPLANATION OF THE SUBJECTS THAT YOU CAN FIND ON THE DVD.
TAKE YOU TIME READ EVERY LINE TWICE AND
GOOOD LUCK.

One of the documents that I copy/pasted from your sample HW page is not saving according to the code. It says that the 'doctype' is in XHTML. Instead my file is saved in .html with the xhtml doctype code labeled at the top which can cause browser issues to read the code. How do I fix that?
