I had trouble setting up the public_html folder from my FTP client, FileZilla. I ended up using the Putty client on port 22 as described here (http://student.santarosa.edu/ssh/). If anyone else is having trouble, try that.

the assignment was at first seemingly daunting when hit with 316 errors from the get go. i managed to get it validated but it took many hours.
hmmm...i think i did everything correctly but i know from last semester at least two assignments never made it to the teacher.
I will follow up on this.

This assignment took longer than I expected. Even without the javascript and tables there was really a lot of code. I started with over 300 errors on the validator but the validator was really helpful along with other tools like the find and replace feature.I look forward to doing some css now.

Hi Linda,
My DVD does not contain the folder
/E:/css-cd1/demo-files
so was not able to link to the example files used in this lesson.
I do have a folder:
/E:/css-cd2/demo-files
but this folder did not contain the subject example files either.
Is there a problem with my DVD, or is there some other way I can gain access to the example files for css-cd1?
Thanks,
Cindy Fanska

I also received the validation warning: "The character encoding specified in the HTTP header (utf-8) is different from the value in the element (iso-8859-1). I will use the value from the HTTP header (utf-8) for this validation." I changed the meta element charset from iso-8859-1 to utf-8, and the warning went away. Hope it won’t cause some unforeseen problem. Also had trouble after uploading until I changed some file names from upper to lower case (thanks to the other posters who mentioned this).

What a tedious assignment, wasn't sure whether I wanted to change numbered paragraphs to lists, etc.
Had trouble at first with organizing files and figuring out how to edit and save the correct file and how to name the links in the homework page. I kept saving my work in the html file instead of notepad, then losing all my work!
I think I am getting back in the swing of things.
But for some strange reason, I actually enjoyed it!

I really enjoyed this assignment. Truthfully, parts of it were review and made it difficult to stay focused, but I know that will change in the next week or two.
I did notice that the link on the Assignment Explanation page for our "homework.html" file is incorrectly spelled (hpmework.html in step 16), so if anyone tries to cut-and-paste, it will not work. Also, I was taught in earlier HTML courses to always put your folder names in lower case, so you will see a "css folder" instead of a "CSS folder". I only mention this because when I copied the capital letters into my browser, it did not find my files... but in lower case it works fine.
Lastly, for some reason I get a warning when I validate my "clean-code.html" page. It states a Character Encoding mismatch!, which reads "The character encoding specified in the HTTP header (utf-8) is different from the value in the element (iso-8859-1). I will use the value from the HTTP header (utf-8) for this validation". I have checked the top of my page against yours from your video and they appear to be the same, so I am stumped. I will submit a proper email question to you on this later.
Thanks for the great lesson and videos. They really help!

I have one question. When I validated my file by URL, I got one warning:
"The character encoding specified in the HTTP header (utf-8) is different from the value in the element (iso-8859-1). I will use the value from the HTTP header (utf-8) for this validation."
But when I validated my file by File upload, I had no problem.

The assignment itself was really simple. Mostly an XHTML review.
Finding and reading all of the scattered instructions took much more time than reading the book or doing the actual assignment. I'm hoping it's just that the class organization takes some getting used to.

A note on validation - to get rid of a UTF-8 error, I switched from:

The lesson was easy but I did run into some confusion regarding the images (between saving source or saving html which brings over the images), and the UTF meta tag issue, and whether or not homework.html needed to be strict XHTML.
