I think this student did an overall good job on their Client 1 site redesign. The color scheme flows well together, nice lavenders and blues. The photos are nice, but the theme of the site wasn't obvious to me right away, It may just be a personal preference, but I just think the pictures should tell the story of the site right away. Also it would be good to enlarge the logo of the page. I like the placement of the text and the background image. The text could have been shrunken and center within the bordered image to the bottom left. And lastly the second level pages were formed well, the text is easy to read and placement was done very nicely.

I know this store :D ! This site is very nice, the colors are great and I love the placement of everything. The logo size and placement is perfect, very easy to read. The menu is in a good place, I would suggest though maybe enlarging the text a bit. The photos read well on what the site's about. The second level pages are also nicely done, easy to navigate and understand. Overall I think this site was very well done.

review of:
http://student.santarosa.edu/~dtarca/webdesign/samples/a5_client1_index.html
Strengths:
easy to read
uncluttered
easy to find header and title
images related to website content
suggestions for improvement:
Change to a softer menu (nav bar) color.
Move lady's head shot slightly to the right so it's not covered by menu (nav bar).
Darker title in header would be a bit easier to pick out of the image (readability).
Set right margin of text in the main body so it lines up with the top image or maybe a bit further inside that top image.
Overall a really nice design. Very nice job!

review of:
http://student.santarosa.edu/~dtarca/webdesign/design135/indexredolesson7.html
Strengths:
Uncluttered
easy to read font family and size
images are clear and easy to see at small-medium size
header and title are bold and easy to read
Suggestions for Improvement:
Background and font colors seem to be too light/muted, increasing the saturation of color would help make the site "pop".
Menu (nav bar) background color is a bit rich and could be lightened a little bit (high contrast, against the light background).
Make the top of the menu (nav bar) line up with the other bodies of text/images (so all three are equal).
Second level pages have black text which could be changed for a relative color from one of the images. Line spacing or organization of the second level text would improve the readability of those pages.
*****
Overall very nice and well thought out website plan.
The softer tones gave the website a warm and welcoming feeling. It wasn't cluttered with too much information or images. Very nice job, your strengths (in my opinion) cover the most important parts of the website. The parts you could improve on are less critical and could be done easily without a complete make-over. Great job!

Debb Womack's psd redesign of Client 1 did not show up for some reason, but the actual redesign did. It looks pretty good and I really like the color palette that she chose for the design. The design stays fairly consistent throughout the interior pages, but lacks the centering code for the second and third page. Also, the third page has a weird width property going on that is making it span the width of the entire screen. These are some major inconsistencies that need to be fixed before presenting them to a client. Overall needs a lot of work.

Debb's client #2 redesign is a major improvement over her first project. She clearly defines the layout in her photoshop version and does a great job of emulating that exact layout with HTML and CSS code. The site and its interior pages are vibrant and full of images which helps the reader understand what the site is all about. There are some things that I would suggest changing before making this site live. The navigation needs a little work. There is no clear definition to an active link and one that is being hovered over. I would at least put a hover color to change the text a little. The footer on some the pages is not aligned right and that just messes up the consistency of the website. Overall a great job on the redesign.

Critique 1 fromDarren Dub sec#
1386 for sharing their crititque of a classmate's site.
comments -
The overall look of the site is clean and appealing. The color scheme is well executed. The placement of the A5 header and footer images seems somewhat arbitrary. If the kitchen image and the header image aligned on the left, that would be an improvement. Also, maybe if the navigation menu was directly under the header image, it would tie the image with the rest of the page. Using the script typeface for the introduction subhead is a little weak. Since you’re using fonts that are uncommon, the end user will receive different results. I think using a stronger or larger type would help. I think main thing that needs improvement is making sure the placement of text and images is more meaningful, because many of the objects on the index page and second level pages are floating on the page. Sorry if I can be a little critical, you did a great job.

The color scheme is great on this page as well. Having a black background makes the photos really pop and is a good idea for a photography website. The layout of the page is well organized. The A5 logo and “Call A5 Photo…” line are a little out of place. The category search and keyword search should be aligned with each-other somehow. The images you chose for the site work well and are nicely cropped. It might be interesting to see what the images look like with a white border around. But it looks fine the way it is.

I feel the layout on the home page is stunning-it showcases a good eye for color. Also, the contrast between the different images creates both cohesion and tension. The scale is excellent and shows an intuitive (or learned) understanding of design and balance.I always look at other student's work and I must admit, this was my favorite website from the 121 Design Template.

How thrilling and privileged to be able to critique a website about building furniture from wood and building websites. I usually approach building a website like doing a painting- but my own love of wood and it's crafting does not seem so far afield from building a website. Although "busy" websites can reflect good design, I think choosing a clean simple design can speak volumes.(I refer to my own simple designs as "coffee table websites.")Kudos to Mark for picking a template that reflects the ability to convey-"I can build a beautiful clean piece of furniture or a beautiful clean website."The understated use of two thumbnails in the gallery quietly reinforces this skill set.
Finally, I would like to mention that I don't ordinarily condone the use of tinted colors with pigmented colors. I believe it works here because all the colors are found in the large image. Also, the simplicity of the design allows for multiple fonts to be used to create interest.
Well done Mark.

This critique is for Bill Olson. First, I need to say I am unfortunately forced to use IE instead of Mozilla to view the pages , which I know may look very different than intended as shown on Mozilla.
I checked out your Jpeg image which looks great, but unfortunately doesn't look that way in IE.
Client 1 strengths are: Color theme used. I liked the brown and pale blue colors. The centering is also nice. I also like the boldness and size of the logo A5 design. It really grabs your attention.
Improvement suggestions: using a dark color for "interior design" instead of white on a pale background. Also I see a "gap" between the menu bar and the background image of the girl. Another improvement might be the color of the text. I thought it was a little too light especially with the strong bold brown theme color and the bold logo.

Strengths: Nice background picture and blending with background color. I checked out your Jpeg redesign which is really very nice. Again IE doesn't do it justice.
Improvement suggestions: I could barely read the pale text in the right box. Also the box that contains the menu bar was a bit too wide and too high I think cutting off the background image. It wasn't blending / transparency effect as shown in the Jpeg.
nice work!

I had to skip down a couple people to find active links for the redesigns.
I looked at here at Megan's redesign of #121.
I like the changes. The images are colorful, interesting and appropriate. Even with the nonsense text we all used, it still had a message.
The menu on the left side has a good choice of colors.
One thought. did you try flipping the bird's photo so the big beak points towards the text instead of the menu? I don't know if it would be better, but that beak sure directs the user's eye.
Nice work.

I had a look at Megan Bennet's redesign of #137.
The first thing that caught my eye was the color scheme, green and maroon. there are several shades of green. I think they work pretty well together. The green background of the logo JDS creating custom guitars seems a little off compared to the other shades, though. The maroon (or red) colors seems to pick up some shades from the large guitar photo and contrasts nicely.
It looks like the logo is in the upper right of the design and it doesn't seem to catch my eye as much as I would expect.
The 'guitars and more' graphic is appropriate but if it were faded out a bit more, the text behind might be more readable?
I like the overall layout. My eye follows it easily.
The menu at the top has an image appear when hovering. That helps the navigation. I think it could be adjusted bit so it doesn't cover the menu text.
Overall nice job, Megan

I really like the color theme for this page, nice bold oranges, and yellows along with blacks, creates good contrast, without being too much. I think the images were also well chosen.
On the second level pages a lighter color was chosen for the content background, which I think was a good choice, it goes well with the rest of the coloration, without being too bold which could easily result in content being hard to read. One suggestion would be to center the site, and also to make the body background color something other than white. However I didn't center my client1 either, so I can't really complain.

Overall I think that this student did a good job. They decided to use a lot of yellow in their site, which goes well with the light bluish green for some of the text, and the green in the right image. This color scheme does work pretty well.
I think the site could have benefited from a bit more contrast, especially I think that it would have been good to make the "our mission" text a little darker so it could stand out better from the background.
I can't comment on the second level pages yet, because they still aren't up, but the main page looks good.

My overall impression is positive and I the first thing I noticed and really like is the montage of graphics on the index page, very nicely balanced in color and content. As I do like the header background the actual text seems a little plain with all the grate images around the page and think the same of the simpler text navigation. Also seeming a bit out t place in its stark contrast was the tag line under the header. Those suggestions are certainly my own personal opinion but as I said, overall I like the site and the way it was laid out quite well. Nice job, keep up the good work.

My overall impression is very positive of this site as its content is nicely laid out and is easy to follow. The color scheme really works with its muted earth tones I found it to be a nice compliment to the actual porcelain products. My only suggestion would be on the menu-item-3 page, to possibly run the far right column all the way down the same way it is on the other pages, just for consistency. Also I do like the angles and designs through out but think the graphics could be a little more dynamic and less jaggy. All in all those are personal tastes and think the site to look very nice.

Again for many of the same reasons I like this redesign due to the simpicity of the colors and the layout of the design. The colors are soothing and harmonious with one another. I think the strengths in this design are the good use of colors, they are nice and soft and light but not to light, the colors also match colors in the images which is nice. The images used were great especially the chair image is great for the country living theme. A couple of suggestions i would have is the background menu color is a little off from the rest of the colors that are so nice, it just seems like the wrong color. Also the white text in the header is a little hard to read. Overall it looks really nice. Excellent job.

I thought there was a lot of strengths to this site. I thought the images used were very appropriate and tied in nicely with the colors used. The background image is nice since the opacity was lowered and the text colors show up nicely over it. The important information is displayed nicely in area's that are easily seen. A couple of suggestions i think could be considered is that not all the colors used in this page blend well together. The background color, header color, and menu color don't work to well together. Also the original design had three layers of background colors, it would have improved the overall look of the redesign if this part of the design was used. Overall the site is nice but i think if it had stayed closer to the original design it could have turned out better.

client #1:
I liked the blues and greens together. I like the bits showing up behind the images
behind the menu and in the main body. However, it's difficult to see the text when it's in
front of the lighter part of the globe. The white behind the menu made my eye
go towards it. The last line of the copyright information falls outside the white background, making it seem a little off.
Menu items 2 and 3 have a nice background and the text is dark. I can read it easily.

I really like the apricot, yellow and green colors. It is a very pretty web page. Without looking at the title "Atlantis Art Gallery", I would guess that it is about art. I think that's important.
Menu item 2 has a picture of the water and the sun through the clouds, which is nice because it picks up the colors of the shell and the right-hand column. It might need some kind of footer at the bottom or more text. I like the
background color. Menu item #3 doesn't have much there. It might be too early.

Tracy Frank's redesign of the 121 interior design site showed good use of colors with a pleasing earthy green and orange that worked well together. Colors tied well to photographs. I liked the choices of colors and photos. The central photo was changed to a basket or bottle made apparently of straw. The middle photo is partially ghosted at the edges. It looked good although the edges could have been faded out to white for better coordination with the rest of the site, in my opinion. The image behind the "Call for free estimate" text was brighter, which drew the eye there, a call to action. On hover, the green menu changes to salmon. The word "interior" at the top of the page is too high to work in conjunction with the word "design," so it looks like "Interior a5 design. Could be readjusted to fix this. Good second-level page fadeout of center photograph, also good sidebar with green background. (I reviewed Client 2 homework for Maggie Gallotti, the next student down on the roster, because Tracy Frank's Client 2 homework was not linked as of late Sunday, 10/11/09.)

Maggie Gallotti's redesign of design 157 exhibited good use of subtle browns and sepia tones. I liked the choices of font colors, with reversed type for the nav menu. I also liked the old horse buggy photo behind the logo, as well as the saddle and horse profile. The rake image, though, I found too mundane, even if horse people scoop up manure with it. The sale items were interesting, though too small to read easily. The background for the center horizontal section seemed blurry and might have been better if it were identifiable. This might be dirt in fuzzy focus, as far as I could tell. Overall, the site feels pleasing to the eye.
