Duke University does a great job of displaying many uses of images on their site. The rotating slideshow draws your attention to the images floating by while the graphic on the right side displays different images in a collage style so that you can view them on your own. Overall a great way to display many different types of images for viewing.

I have used this site as my search engine since I was introduced to it way back when I had a webTV. I like its simplicity and lack of advertisements. I think the graphic of a smiling fat gray haired woman is cute and appropriate. Occasionally depending on the season, she gets dressed up in some attire that complements the holiday or season. Now, I dont know that I would want this as a model for my work exactly. I guess I would model the simplicity and clean lines but perhaps not the exact graphic.

This website of an architectural firm is, of course about design. I think the contrast of the blueprint style with the small photos in the box is effective. It makes me want to look into the little window and see what else is there. The menu at the top is different, not sure if I like it or not, because it looks like there aren't many choices...maybe that's what they intended. The different color bars when rolling over the menu items are nice, though.

I like this site because of how clean it feels. I like the drop down menus from above. I like that they are all in one area; easily accessible and easy to read. I also like that there are rotating pictures whenever you click on one of the menus or the picture itself. Its wide, the colors are pleasing and the text is easy to read. I like the use of boxes as well. I also like the wave in the photo. I'd like to learn how to accomplish that at some point

http://www.mint.com is a free Online Money Management and Budget Planner. The use of mint light colors gives this site a friendly fresh accessible feeling. It is interesting though, when you view the color information for the site in the Firefox Web Developer toolbar many of the colors used are very dark. It dose not feel like a typical bank/corporate site but is very professional. The theme and icons used of mint and grass are fun. The orange buttons and badges catch your eye and help you to take action.

A web/graphic designer from Singapore, he created this site in 2006. I consider it a breath of fresh air from all the fast, flashy, noisy websites you often see and use. It has been my artistic inspiration to create, whenever acceptable, simple sites. The term I created to describe them is "coffee table websites." Although color(sumi?) plays a minor role, it is the images themselves that I find stunning. Also, it is one of the only sites that allows you to hear the music without the urge to turn it down.

I was struck by the dramatic use of only two basic colors - The first is pink, which ranges from a very light peach to nearly red for the background. The second is the use of various shades of beige to brown found in the skin tone, eyes and hair of Gretchen. Most photos are head shots against the pink background, but some show her wearing a pink dress with brown boots... This site is not only very visually appealing, but it was produced to promote her latest CD, which plays in the background giving it a sense of liveliness. Both the background hues and the photo colors were edited extensively in Photoshop.

I searched the web for quite a while looking at different websites for interior designers and kept coming back to this site. It was simple and clean and very easy to navigate through. There wasn't a lot of bells and whistles which I thought was appropriate and displayed a very professional look. Everything was right there on the screen at all times...I didn't have to do a lot of scrolling or jumping from page to page to get the information. I liked the way the photos were displayed...For example,You could navigate to the residential design page and you could flip through the photos like a slide show. The entire site is done against a black background which allows the colors of the photos to stand out and look very rich and inviting. The site also had a similar basic layout as the template we are using. I also found some great links to some sites that show some very creative sites, navigation ideas, and header ideas. These sites also have links to other sites that you can go to and get inspiration and get your creativity all fired up. Those sites are: http://speckyboy.com/2009/07/07/50-creative-and-inspirational-personal-portfolio-websites/ http://vandelaydesign.com/blog/galleries/website-headers/ http://vandelaydesign.com/blog/galleries/creative-navigation/

I can't believe nobody used this yet! Google's logo is about as simple as you can get, but considering it's the focal point of the oh-so-popular page, it's become so recognizable that nearly everyone knows it. It's been parodied many times, and it changes on certain days to reflect whatever events are happening, but it's always easily remembered. Not only that, but it's used on nearly every page (if NOT every page) on the website, and serves as a way of navigating searches with many pages of results. If that's not a good logo, I don't know what is.

The photos are displayed cleverly and the cup of coffee in the sidebar even has a coffee ring showing on the main content page. The ticket you click on is clever (and shows on each page)and I love the passport and coins they added with the photos. The colors make it look old, yet very classy. I like the colors, the interesting fonts, the images. I like the way the menus drop down and the backgrounds of those menus are translucent with the hover being a different color and opaque. The site is easy to navigate. It has the same top menu on every page so you can go to any page without having to use the back button. Of course I find the subject matter something to fantasize about until it can become a reality.

The colors are harmonious; the two opposing rounded corners of the container give the site a friendly, custom look; the image is partially covered by a semi-transparent rectangle, a theme that is repeated in the navigation (in the hover state). Second navigation at the bottom of the screen eases usability. Gallery is clean, attractive, and user-friendly, as is entire site.

This site was simple and the design was good. I liked the fact that both the museums featured on this site had a logo, or image, associated with the museum, and then the logos were put together at a different area of the page, creating harmony and god design. I chose Zappos.com, the online shoe store (insert appropriate girls and their shoes joke here). I think this is a good example of a logo because it's simple text name with a "button" shape holding the dot-com text. The exclamation point looks like the sole of a high-heel shoe with a "Z" in it. Basically branding all over the place in a very small space.

I am really impressed with the home page of the Harvard University Art Museums. I love the way they wove the collage throughout the page and their use of transparency. The use of crisp images and faded images gives the page depth and good eye flow throughout the page. Nice neutral palette with pops of color. The collage method is also successful for the text logo and ties in with the rest of the page.

Most importantly the site is clean and uncluttered (except for the ads.) A lot of white background makes it easy on the eyes in a lighted room and lets you focus on the content. The color scheme is well chosen with saturated but soft colors that complement each other. As you navigate around the site the column backgrounds change to other colors in a complementary palette which adds a subtle interesting look. Also since the site has ads (ubiqitous for most sites) which the author has little control over, the neutral color scheme contains them nicely

The colors work really well together, and they enhance the colors in the images chosen for the home page. The large, close-up images sitting directly against the background color with no other imagery behind them are very effective for this purpose -- product descriptions. It's fun to look at and it's also a very clear organization of information using images. I like the curved boundary between the two background colors. How do we do that?

I actually couldn't decide between two, but this one I really liked the way the photos were used. It really accented the art. Everything flows together. It just gives you a feel for what you might see there, so I think it accomplishes what they want is to get you to come and visit. I like the way each photo is placed on the page, not just a square object. Like it really on the page. The background is soothing. I came across this link to the Frances Lehman Loeb Art Center at Vassar. Out of all of the different font websites there are online; it is kind of hard to believe that there are not many out there with a nicely designed, especially since fonts and design go hand in hand. However the color palette on this site, Font Diner, works very well with the entire theme. Since the site is trying to portray an old fashioned diner, they keep with the retro feel throughout the entire site by using really bold and traditional colors that are found in diners such as: reds, yellows, and browns. When you look at the site as a whole, it looks as though everything is placed inside of a jukebox. The bottom and top graphics; “Specials” and “Dine-o-Matic”, match the engraving of a jukebox, and the silver color used really helps the graphic seem more realistic. And to go along with the feel of a diner and a jukebox, the navigation bar at the bottom moves up and down, and they look like buttons found on an actual jukebox. Tenisha Proctor

This was the "artiest" of the art school sites I visited. I was especially impressed by the way the main graphic repeats/continues into the next column and into the spacer. It also changes each time you re-visit the home page - a great way to display a variety of images. I also really liked the multiple columns and wide spacers. I would have expected it to start feeling choppy and squeezed in - but it works. I like the way most of the navigation is presented on the left - with the sub-levels dropping down from the main sections. Some of the text choices are hard to read - the grey on white nav buttons at the very top and the sub-levels in yellow on orange.

I really liked certain aspect about this homepage for USF. I thought that the alternating pictures was cool. I felt like the large pics was a good use of space because the pics were good quality and they did a good job of capturing the campus and the city. I like the navbar on the riht side but I did not like the overlapping navbar on the top. I also liked the several smaller photos that were sed towards the bottom of the. This was my favorite of the school that I looked at. I honestly did not take all that design layout from this site. I found a site from a web design magazine of a pub that I thought was pretty cool and kind ofmorphed the two. Taking more from the pub's site. Although the large photo was an inspiration for my homepage having the arge photo in the middle, followed by a bock of text.

I ended up at the University of Michigan’s School of Art and Design home page. I found this site to be very refreshing in general. The colors are very bright and appealing, but used sparingly Each page has different accent colors, but the layout is the same so it works. There is complete unity between the 3 levels of indexed pages. The double menu bar along the top seemed slightly under emphasized when I first looked at it, but as I used it, I saw it was very functional and easy to navigate. As you explore the second level pages each page opens with a third level nav bar that relates to the subject, very clear, clean and smooth. The site uses all the basic design principals well: Contrast is achieved with contrasting bright colors with a white background and on some pages tints. The text is contrasted with a serif for headlines and a clear easy to read sans serif for the body text. Some of it is highlighted for accent, which is cool. In all cases it is well placed and uses the proximity rule. Consistent alignment is also maintained throughout the site. It is mostly left justified but there are well placed subject boxes which function as columns but are more interesting. As I mentioned several times the repetition of color style, design elements, consistency and also the manner in which photos are used gives the site good balance and repeated motifs. But the best part is that it is done without becoming boring. The delightful mood the site design generates is so appealing, I found myself exploring every page. Now that is a successful design!

TThis web site is not really a model of what I am doing, but what I would like to do. I know it is not a web site of a school, but I think the style of this site could be used for many different types of professional sites. This web site is simple but at the same time cool and elegant. It is easy to navigate, and hard to get lost. The style is bold but not in your face- clean but not boring. There are so many schools on the web. I had about ten that I liked and narrowed it down to three that I printed so I could compare them. This one is my favorite and the page for about Pacifica http://pacifica.edu/about.html I like even more. I like the calm look and the picture in the background. They use that on several pages and then a simpler page with more text for what I would consider second level pages. I don't think my skills are up to doing it quite the way they did, but I am going to try to incorporate some of the elements in my site.

Parsons The New School of Design Design & Technology This site is definitely on a grid. It almost looks too organized, but is easy to navigate, has splashes of color from various student art projects, and has a lot of white space. With each visit to the site the showcased artwork changes. The use of neutral and somewhat industrial colors are gives it a sophisticated look fitting for a design school in New York City. The hierarchy of information is well thought out with links on a navigator bar for general purposes and a side nav bar with specifics to the programs offered. Almost half the screen (the lower half) is devoted to events and projects of interest. I like their use of white space. The graphics are so subtle that they almost look like more white space, but have understated visual interest. The section on Research + Partners is particularly fun to work through.

Well I wouldn't say it was a model per se, more of an example or inspiration. I liked the simplicity of the site. I tend to like simple sites, especially for the first page. It makes it easier to navigate I think. I would rather have to access a couple of layers of pages quickly then spend lots of time trying to search for just the right link from the first page of the site to where I want to be. This site isn't perfect as the "index" letters are to small to read easily or click on quickly. It would be easy to hit the wrong letter I think.

I looked at a lot of college & university sites, many of which I found way too busy. Too much info on the home page and on several sites, there was an ugly form on the home page for getting more information. I came upon the College of Creative Arts and it caught my eye. The home page is more of a cover page that you can't get back to easily but I liked the look. The subpages have continuity in their design but differences in colors and images. I liked the pages being concise with no scrolling down on my screen. I didn't like that there was "main" navigation on the top and the bottom of the page. In previewing websites, I printed off about 10 pages that had elements I liked. I didn't base my design wholly on a single site, but compiled from many. This site from CSS ZenGarden, is one I liked for a variety of reasons. The over-all look is bold. The dark tones with gold are very rich and the color pallett is consistant. The free space around the central content panel provides some relief for the eye. I do find the content area to be hard to read...too contrasty? too vibrant on the eyes? Type too small? The right-side navigation is a little different...the script font is pretty, and the styalized seperator between the buttons is a different sort of touch. As one scrolls up and down the page there are empty "window" that display an image (sheets of music) from behind the windows. Very Cool! But for me, primarily, I love the art-work on the page. Artsy, Dramatic, bold, sophisticated, refined. I am so impressed with the "Mozart" title graphic, and I like the images displayed off the left side of the window. I can't wait to be able to execute an awesome page like this!

I liked the collage of activities/programs as all one image, the logo at the top of the opening page was nice. The written information was plainly visible, clearly legible and quite secondary to the visual impression of the school programs. I like the drop down menus at the bottom of the screen as well. I did not like the fact that you have to scroll down on the opening page, especially since there is nothing of visual interest when you do. Also, the site is being designed by several students and it shows in the different styles of the pages. At one point, I had to check the URL in my browswer to be sure I hadn't gone on to another school's site because the style was so different.

I didn't necessarily base my work on the design of this site, but after looking at about 15 college web pages, I thought this was one of the cleanest and best organized. I general I think it has nice simple lines and a pleasant color scheme. All the information is all of the important navigational links are easy to find and well aligned. I like how contained everything is, and that the page is not very wide or tall. Too many of the pages I looked at were sprawling. The thing I don't like about this page is that there are possibly too many links in the lower right half of the page that look a little messy.
