Most people today know that our transportation system is causing many problems, but since it seems so difficult to fix the system, only a few people try and most of the others resist. It probably won’t change very much until crises prove the necessity. One hundred years ago choosing a different path of development would have been much easier, because the infrastructure was minimal. Had we gone toward a system based on walking, bicycles and the public conveyances already in existence at that time, we would be in a much better position today for entering the post-petroleum age.

Since it took 100 years to get ourselves into this awkward situation, we can only expect that another hundred years will be needed to fully recover. I'll suggest some of the things that could be done to get back on the right course.

Few good ideas are really new or original. However, some very good research has been done, which can provide guidance for the new path. While sharing some of my own ideas, I'll provide access to some interesting work done by others, either by including them here or by links to other websites. There are also links to other more fully developed transportation websites.
