Bill Collier Cup Challenge - Klamath Falls, Oregon - January 15-18, 2010

COLLIER CUP CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Three Rivers, Oregon
5
- Santa Rosa Flyers 1

Monday, January 18, 2010 (Klamath Falls): The big team from Three Rivers, near Portland, in the Oregon High School Hockey League, dominated the tournament, but had to work hard to defeat the Santa Rosa Flyers in the championship game. We were without our high scoring center, Kevin Parry, out with an elbow injury from the previous game. Three Rivers outshot us 37-11 but faced our outstanding goaltender, Sean Fitzpatrick. Our goal was scored by our guest high school player, Lucas Weeks, off the face-off won by Peter Strauch. 3 Rivers scored 2 in the first, 2 in the second and 1 in the third. According to the tournament director, that team faces no tougher competition in their own high school league. Our team was complimented by the tournament director and two different opposing coaches for our disciplined play and quickness. Great job guys!!

COLLIER CUP SEMI-FINAL
Flyers win 10 minutes into Sudden Death Overtime
Santa Rosa Flyers
4
- Mt. Hood, Oregon 3

Sunday, January 17, 2010 (Klamath Falls): A fast physical game that we won in the 10th minute of overtime! Mt. Hood opened the scoring on a power play over half way through the first period and finished the period up 1-0. In the opening minute of the second period, Jonathan Gruber tied the score, assisted by Andy Kotval. Mt Hood regained the lead 4 minutes later. Six minutes later, captain James Blount made a fast end-to-end rush, blasting the puck by the Hood tender to tie the score again on a power play. And, with less than 2 minutes left in the period, Michael Williams recovered the puck in the Hood zone and fired the puck past the goalie’s elbow to take the lead 3-2. Mt. Hood scored the only goal in the third to tie the game at 3-3. Ten minutes into sudden death overtime, Connor Smith received a perfect pass from Evan Hastings, made an excellent through-the-legs move on the defender, faked the goalie and scored the winning goal. Goalie Sean Fitzpatrick stopped 42 of 43 shots on our goal, many of them just amazing. On a bad note, center Kevin Parry was injured by a vicious hit into the end boards and had to go to the hospital. He is OK, but for an injured elbow which is splinted.

Santa Rosa Flyers 2 - Portland Metro 1

Sunday, January 17, 2010 (Klamath Falls): This was an outstanding, exciting game. The Metro team was very physical, but no match for our passing and puck support as we outshot them 44-29. Both goalies played great games and there was no scoring in the first period. Metro finally scored 5 minutes into the second period and the period ended with Metro leading 1-0. The Flyers persisted and tied the score 90 seconds into the 3rd period. The rest of the period was intense as we peppered a good goalie with many shots, finally pushing one in with 1 minute remaining in the game. The gold line scored with Peter Strauch getting the credit for the goal and linemates Kevin Parry and Jonathan Gruber for the assists. All 3 lines worked great around and behind the Metro net, controlling the play. Sean Fitzpatrick stopped 28 of the 29 shots.

Santa Rosa Flyers 6 - Vancourver, WA 2

Saturday, January 16, 2010 (Klamath Falls): Santa Rosa dominated the game from the outset, out hustling a bigger team. Kevin Parry started the scoring on a pass from Peter Strauch 5 minutes into the game. The second goal was scored by Jonathan Gruber from Strauch and our added CN JV player, Lucas Weeks. In the second period Gruber scored again, assisted by Parry. Then Parry scored his second goal, assisted by Strauch and Andy Kotval. In the third period, rookie Michael Williams scored two goals; one assisted by Niklis Nisja and the second by Weeks. Then we ran out of steam in the last two minutes and couldn't protect the shutout, allowing 2 goals by the motivated Vancouver team. The shots were approximately 40 to 26 in our favor. We demonstrated exceptional tenacity and puck support. Great game.

Mt. Hood, Oregon 4 - Santa Rosa Flyers 3

Saturday, January 16, 2010 (Klamath Falls Oregon): We played in the beautiful Klamath Ice Sports outdoor arena, covered by a "tent top". The Mt. Hood team from the Oregon High School Hockey League, were bigger but we were definitely a match for ability. We jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period in the first 4 minutes on a goal by Connor Smith, assisted by Max Brownlee and Evan Hastings. Mt. Hood tied the score with 30 seconds remaining in the period. We scored two goals in the second period: Nick Nisja scored in tight from Sean Patrick Kelley and Andy Kotval. Evan Hastings scored the third goal from linemates Smith and Brownlee. We ran low on gas in the third and Mt. Hood picked up the pace (used to the elevation?). Mt. Hood scored 3 to our none to win the game 4-3. Mt. Hood outshot us 48-36 as Sean stopped 44. We were missing Jonathan Gruber (serving GM), but picked up Lucas Weeks from our CN Junior Varsity team.
