Santa Rosa Flyers 2 - San Jose Junior Sharks II 0

Sunday, March 14 (San Jose north rink): The San Jose Sharks number 2 team was intent on taking it to us as they outshot us 26-21 and held the game scoreless until the third period. Our first goal came on a stuff by Jonathan Gruber (20 for the season) after a shot by Marc Chicoine off a pass from Peter Strauch, early in the third. The second goal was shot in by Strauch, assisted by Kevin Parry and James Blount on a power play. Sean Fitzpatrick stopped all 26 shots for his 4th shutout of the season.

Tri-Valley Blue Devils 4 - Santa Rosa Flyers 1

Sunday, March 7, 2010 (Oakland) : Santa Rosa played an outstanding game against a very good team. Tri-Valley scored 3 in the first period, but the second period was tied 1-1 and the third period was 0-0. We had lots of chances and some real close ones, but just couldn't cash in. Our loan goal, scored in the second, was by Connor Smith after a nice pass from Clay McCormick. Great hustle, good physical play and some good passing. Great game! Sean Fitzpatrick stopped 34 of 38 shots and we managed 15 shots.

Santa Rosa Flyers 1 - Cupertino Cougars 1

Saturday, March 6, 2010 (Bridgepoint) : The Cougers jumped out to a 1-0 lead and held it until the last 40 seconds of the game when we tied it on a 4-on-3 powerplay (Kevin Parry from Marc Chicoine and Peter Strauch). Not one of our better games, we were out hustled. Paul Gregorian turned away 19 of the 20 shots fired at him.

Vacaville Jets 5 - Santa Rosa Flyers 1

Sunday, February 28, 2010 (Vacaville) : Vacaville jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period. The second period was scoreless and things looked promising in the third as we scored in the first 30 seconds to close the gap to 2-1. Kevin Parry popped it in on a pass from Peter Strauch and Marc Chicoine. However, instead, Vacaville turned it up and scored 3 more unanswered goals to defeat us 5-1.

Santa Clara Blackhawks 4 - Santa Rosa Flyers 0

Saturday, February 27, 2010 (Santa Rosa) : Santa Clara outshot us 45-5 but Sean Fitzpatrick stopped 41 of them and we held Santa Clara scoreless in the second period. They are a good team and we played quite well, in spite of the score.

San Jose Junior Sharks#1 5 - Santa Rosa Flyers 0

Saturday, February 20, 2010 (Santa Rosa) : Other than allowing 4 goals in a 3.5 minute span in the first period, we played this excellent team very tight. They scored one more in the second and we played them to a scoreless tie in the third. We were quicker and better at limiting time and space than 2 weeks ago. We were outshot 48-12 but Sean stopped 43 of them and we got 10 more shots off than last time.

San Jose Junior Sharks#1 12 - Santa Rosa Flyers 0

Saturday, February 6, 2010 (San Jose) : The San Jose team is fast and and even more skilled than the last time we met them. This International Silver Stick finalist outshot us 67-2 and basically schooled us. But nobody quit and our 3 defensemen worked very hard the whole game. Sean Fitzpatrick stopped 55 shots, many of them hard and point-blank.

Santa Rosa Flyers 6 - Cupertino Cougars 2

Saturday, January 30, 2010 (Bridgepoint, San Mateo): It was a scary start, as we finished the first period down 1-0 and finished the second period tied 2-2 with the last place team in the league. We came to San Mateo without our leading scorer, Kevin Parry, it was Paul Gregorian's first game of the season in goal (Sean Fitzpatrick is at the California USA Hockey Select camp) and it was Clay McCormick's first game since he broke his collarbone. Paul played well and the team turned things around in the third to score 4 unanswered goals. Cupertino scored first to take a 1-0 lead that held for the whole first period. Max Brownlee tied the game 2 minutes into the second period, assisted by red linemate Connor Smith; and we took a lead later in the period on Max Brownlee's second goal (unassisted). However, with 20 seconds remaining in the second period the Cougars tied the score on a power play. And then we woke up: Peter Strauch scored a wraparound 45 seconds into the third period. We dominated the play in the third and in the last 6 minutes we scored 3 more goals: Connor Smith scored on after Marc Chicoine passed a rebound from Max Brownlee's shot; Max scored his third (HAT TRICK) goal on an outstanding pass from Connor Smith and then scored his FOURTH goal of the game after stripping a Cougar of the puck and sending it into an open net. Clay McCormick's comeback was very successful for the red line, and the defense played an excellent second half. A GREAT finish! Congratulations.

Vacaville Jets 3 - Santa Rosa Flyers 1

Saturday, January 23, 2010 (Santa Rosa): The Vacaville Jets outshot Santa Rosa 38-10. We had no appreciable offense. Our defense played well, especially considering we played with 3 D and Sean Fitzpatrick played well. We could not break it out or sustain any offense in the Vacaville zone and we did not support the puck as effectively as we usually do. We were off our game. It happens in the NHL. The Vacaville forecheck was fast and intense. Our loan goal was and end to end rush and hard shot by Peter Strauch. Kevin Parry was, once again, nailed by an unnecessary check into the end boards, injuring his knee.

Tri-Valley Blue Devils 3 - Santa Rosa Flyers 1

Saturday, January 9, 2010 (Santa Rosa): We played them to a tie for 42 minutes and succumbed to the Tri-Valley pressure, giving up 2 goals in the final 3 minutes. We even survived a long 3 on 5 penalty kill. We lost Jonathan Gruber to a 5 and a Game early in the game and we missed Marc Chicoine for a 2 and 10, both for checking from behind. The rest of the team stepped up the defensive play, but we still had trouble offensively as we only managed 12 shots to Tri-Valley's 47. Sean Fitzpatrick made a lot of saves, many of them outstanding! Our tying goal was a wrist shot by Alex Kotval on a pass from James Blount. Once again, we proved we can play well against the tough teams in our league.

Santa Clara Blackhawks 3 - Santa Rosa Flyers 1

Saturday, December 19, 2009 (Fremont): We shocked the Santa Clara team with our hustle and intensity. At the end of 1 period the score was 0-0. At the end of the second period it was 1-1. We scored first on a great shot by Max Brownlee after a pass from Connor Smith. The Blackhawks only went ahead with 2 minutes remaining in the game by pulling their goalie and pressuring us in our own end. The 3rd goal came from a wraparound in the last second of the game, still on a 6-on-5 situation. Our star netminder, Sean Fitzpatrick injured his thumb on his catching hand in the first period. He toughed it out for the rest of the period and half of the second period, but just couldn't go on from there. Max Brownlee (who had already scored our only goal) put on Sean's pads and played the second half of the game in net. He hadn't played in the net since 3 seasons ago and yet stopped 18 of 20 shots. Sean stopped 19 of 20 (part of the time injured). This was a classic example of a game that felt like a win, in spite of the scoreboard. Great game guys!!

Santa Rosa Flyers 8 - San Jose Junior Sharks II 2

Sunday, December 13, 2009 (San Jose north rink): The Santa Rosa Flyers took control immediately and scored 4 goals in the first period to zero for the Sharks #2 team. The first was scored by Kevin Parry, assisted by Jonathan Gruber and Andy Kotval. The second was by Max Brownlee from Andy Kotval and Evan Hastings. The third was by Gruber from linemates Peter Strauch and Parry. The final goal of the first period was Gruber's second goal, assisted once again by linemates Parry and Strauch. We played almost the whole second period without any scoring but the one goal near the end, ....Jonathan Gruber's natural hattrick 3rd goal from defenseman Marc Chicoine, to close out the second period with a 5-0 lead. In the first 20 seconds of the third, Peter Strauch opened with a power play goal, assisted by Andy Kotval. San Jose came right back with 2 back-to-back goals, closing the gap to 6-2. We woke back up and held them scoreless for the rest of the game, while scoring 2 of our own: Nick Nisja scored his first goal of the season, assisted by linemates Michael Williams and Sean Patrick Kelley. Alternate captain Kevin Parry closed out the scoring with his second goal of the day, assisted by linemates Strauch and Gruber.

Santa Clara Blackhawks 6 - Santa Rosa Flyers 0

Sunday, December 6, 2009 (San Jose): We were up against a, faster better team. The best we could do was keep the second period scoreless. We managed only 5 shots for the game, against their 39. We had our moments but we were not a match, especially for their speed.

Tri-Valley Blue Devils 6 - Santa Rosa Flyers 1

Saturday, November 21, 2009 (Santa Rosa): We were up against a bigger, faster better team. We stayed in the game and made it difficult for them. Sean Fitzpatrick frustrated them by stopping 47 of their 53 shots on goal and we managed 21 shots of our own, often putting great pressure on their net. We played well. The score was only 1-0 at the end of the first period. TV scored 4 in the second and 2 in the third. We scored our goal in the third when Max Brownlee had the patience to hesitate on his shot for a better opening, after receiving a combination of passes from his linemates Connor Smith and Evan Hastings. Marc Chicoine started the play with a feed to Hastings. ....and we had other chances. Unfortunately the game ended early for Clay McCormick as he fractured his collarbone on a hard hit from TV player. And on the last play of the game, Andy Kotval split his chin for an emergency room glue job. We will miss Clay in the upcoming Thanksgiving Silver Stick.

Santa Rosa Flyers 8 - Cupertino Cougars 2

Saturday, November 14, 2009 (Santa Rosa): Peter Strauch opened the scoring less than 3 minutes into the game on a pass from Max Brownlee from behind the net. Cupertino held us off most of the period and then tied the score on a powerplay goal. Less than a minute later SR went ahead 2-1 on a goal by Max Brownlee, assisted by Niklis Nisja and Alex Kotval. 30 seconds into the second period Strauch scored his second goal on a feed from linemate Jonathan Gruber. One minute later Cupertino made the score a close 3-2 and then, 30 seconds later, the Flyers turned it on. Defenseman Andy Kotval took it all the way in for a goal after receiving the puck from Evan Hastings. Then we scored two powerplay goals in a row: Gruber from Kevin Parry and Andy Kotval, then Alex Kotval fired a hard shot for a goal from the point, assisted by Strauch and Parry. Then, during a Santa Rosa line change, a Cougar player put the puck in his own net. Parry was given credit, assisted by Gruber and Alex Kotval (who had both left the ice). There was only 1 goal in the third period: Connor Smith, unassisted. We really controlled the puck and outshot the Cougars 35-21. Sean Fitzpatrick stopped 19 of them. On a sad note the Cougars captain fractured his wrist.

Santa Rosa Flyers 2 - Vacaville Jets 2

Saturday, November 7, 2009 (Santa Rosa): Great game Santa Rosa Flyers. In the first period Vacaville out skated us and beat us to the puck. The scored 2 goals, closing out the period 2-0. In the second period, Santa Rosa woke up and took over, scoring 2 goal to even the score 2-2. Connor Smith scored, assisted by Evan Hastings and Andy Kotval. Then Peter Strauch took a perfect breakout pass from Jonathan Gruber, skated in and scored from the face-off circle. The third period was back and forth and scoreless. Sean Fitzpatrick made some outstanding saves, especially in the third period as we were slightly outshot 28-20 for the game. Good work all around TEAM!

Santa Rosa Flyers 5 - San Jose Junior Sharks#2 1

Sunday, November 1, 2009 (Santa Rosa): Santa Rosa went right after it, from the start. Focus and intensity paid off as we beat San Jose to the puck and got it right back when they did get it. The scoring opened with Michael Williams' first goal as a travel hockey player, assisted by his green linemates Clay McCormick and Sean Patrick Kelley. San Jose tied the game 2 minutes later on a scrum around our net, but that was their one and only goal. The Flyers regained the lead a minute later when Kevin Parry scored on a power play, assisted by the defense pair of Andy Kotval and Alex Kotval. We scored 2 in the second period: Peter Strauch from Marc Chicoine and Jonathan Gruber, then a second one by Peter Strauch, scored with patience and accuracy as he lifted it over the goalie close in. It was assisted by Gruber. We topped of the scoring with one more in the third as the green line scored its second goal (Kelley from Williams and Chicoine). Sean Fitzpatrick stopped 24 of the 25 SJ shots, pulling out some tough ones in the third.

San Jose Junior Sharks#1 4 - Santa Rosa Flyers 0

Saturday, October 24, 2009 (Santa Rosa): The San Jose team is fast and skilled. They outplayed us but held them to 2 goals in the first and 2 goals in the third. We tied the 2nd period 0-0. We had chances, we back-checked and Sean Fitzpatrick turned away 38 of 42 shots on our goal. 2 of the goals were even strength, 1 was short-handed and one was on a powerplay. Here is a message from Ciaran Cleary on Facebook after seeing the score from our game -- "WOW that is really awesome like really good guys. I see them practice everyday and they are really good. They are a legit AA team. CONGRATS"

Santa Rosa Flyers 8 - Cupertino Cougars 0

Sunday, October 18, 2009 (Santa Rosa): Bubble weekend tipped us into "A". We outplayed and outshot the Cupertino Cougars 41-14 as Netminder, Sean Fitzpatrick turned away all, for his second shutout of the season. We started out slow and a little sloppy as we finished the first period 1-0 on a goal by the red line (Max Brownlee from Connor Smith and Clay McCormick). The score remained 1-0 until almost the 10 minute mark of the second period when Max made a breakaway goal after receiving a pass from defenseman Marc Chicoine. A minute later Chicoine scored his own goal after a perfect feed to the slot, from Sean Patrick Kelley behind the Cougars' net. We scored 5 more unanswered goals in the third period, starting in the first 30 seconds as the gold line scored (Peter Strauch from Kevin Parry and Jonathan Gruber). Then the green line scored as Kelley scored his first goal of the season from Evan Hastings and Michael Williams on a power play. A minute later, the gold line struck again on a goal by Parry from Gruber and Strauch. And a minute after that Max Brownlee scored his 3rd goal of the game (Hat trick) from red linemate Clay McCormick and defenseman Alex Kotval. We topped off the scoring with a minute and a half remaining on a goal by Gruber from Strauch and Alex Kotval's second assist. Another highlight was the improved breakouts, set up by great turnovers by our defensemen. Note that EVERY forward and defenseman on the team is on the season scoreboard already.

Vacaville Jets 3 - Santa Rosa Flyers 1

Sunday, October 11, 2009 (Vacaville): We played well in every department except the breakout under pressure. We turned the puck over in our own zone over and over. We hustled with them and we were physical. We outmuscled them for the puck, but we didn't get enough shots off. The first two periods were scoreless. Vacaville opened the scoring just over a minute into the third period but we answered back 1 minute later on a goal by Jonathan Gruber from Peter Strauch and James Blount. The Jets went ahead 2-1 and little over a minute after that increased their lead to 3-1 with 3 minutes remaining in the game. They outshot us 34-13 but Sean Fitzpatrick turned away 91% of their shots.

Tri-Valley Blue Devils 4 - Santa Rosa Flyers 1

Sunday, October 4, 2009 (Oakland): We played our best game of the season, so far. It was fast, intense and closer than the score indicates. Tri-Valley opened the scoring in the 5th minute of the game and Santa Rosa followed 20 seconds later, with the tieing goal by Jonathan Gruber from Kevin Parry and Andy Kotval. Tri-Valley scored 3 in the second (two of them on one shift) and we tied the third period 0-0. Our defense was excellent and our goal tending outstanding as we were outshot 45-19. Our races to the puck and our physical play matched this team that had just come of wins against AA competition. Sean Fitzpatrick stopped 41 of the 45 shots on goal. Tri-Valley knew they were in a game. Congratulations Flyers!

Santa Rosa Flyers 11 - Fresno Falcons 2

Saturday, October 3, 2009 (Santa Rosa): Pre-season is looking pretty good, so far as we won our 4th of 4, outshooting the Fresno Falcons 35-22 and outscoring them 11-2. Good hustle beat them to the puck and good passing set up a lot of goals. Connor Smith opened the scoring half way through the first period, with a great rush, after receiving a pass from Marc Chicoine and James Blount. Blount scored from the slot on a pass from Clay McCormick. Then Chicoine scored, with help from Sean Patrick Kelley. Fresno scored with 6 seconds remaining in the first period to close the gap to 3-1 after one. We scored 5 in the second: Parry on a perfect pass right in front of the net from Niklis Nisja who had received a breakout pass from Andy Kotval; Andy Kotval followed with a great slapshot from just inside the point, on a pass from Max Brownlee while we were playing 4-on-4; Marc Chicoine scored unassisted; the red line put together a nice goal (Brownlee from McCormick and Connor Smith);the gold line combined for one (Gruber from Parry and Hastings). We scored 2 more in the 3rd and Fresno scored 1. Brownlee scored a short-handed goal unassisted and the gold line scored again (Gruber from Parry and Hastings). The final tally was a goal by Evan Hastings, assisted by Parry. Netminder Sean Fitzpatrick turned away 20 of 22 shots.

COMMITMENT

We will play with speed, quickness, assertiveness, aggressiveness, and intelligence with reading and reacting decisions, without being cheap. We will have discipline over emotion. We will play as a team. We will follow team strategy. It is “big team, little me.” We will out play them. We will out defense them. We will out forecheck them, we will out backcheck them, we will out cover them, we will out skate them, we will out pass them, we will out shoot them, we will out body check them, we will out attack them, we will out support them. We will outlast them. I alone know how hard I can work; no one will outwork me. I will be caring, positive, and do the right thing in all my time with the U.S.A. Select 16.

Santa Rosa Flyers 2 - San Jose B2 1

Saturday, September 26, 2009 (Santa Rosa): Good hustle, good teamwork, against a more competitive team. San Jose opened the scoring in the first period when a San Jose forward stipped us of the puck and rushed from the blue line on a breakaway to beat Sean. We tied it up early in the second when Max Brownlee got a breakout pass from James Blount and rushed down the right side, firing a shot to the far post and in. Later, in the second period Kevin Parry passed the puck to Blount who fired from the top of the circle and Jonathan Gruber stuffed the short rebound. All of the players played as a team. It looked good. We outshot them 20-15 and Sean Fitzpatrick stopped 14 of the 15.

Santa Rosa Flyers 3 - San Francisco Saber Cats 0

Saturday, September 19, 2009 (San Francisco): It was clean game with only one penalty in the first period. We outplayed them for the most of the game outshoting them 2 to 1 and when they did get shots off, for the most part they were not quality shots. We scored in the first period with a goal from Andy Kotval, assisted by Hastings and Parry. The score after one was 1-0. The second period saw no scoring and play was pretty even. In the third period we struck for two goals on one shift from the Parry, Gruber, Strauch line (Parry from Gruber & Strauch, then Gruber from Strauch and Parry). Netminder, Sean Fitzpatrick turned away all of the 14 shots on our goal. We managed 31 shots on theirs.

Santa Rosa Flyers 8 - Capital Thunder 1

Saturday, September 12, 2009 (Santa Rosa): Our first pre-season EXHIBITION game was a good win. We worked hard, even when we were up. We were only up 1-0 after 1 and 2-0 after 2. The CT primary goalie kept most of our shots out of the net. After CT put in their rookie and we continued to improve our play as the game went on, we scored another 6 goals to CT's 1. James Blount scored a HAT TRICK and Kevin Parry and Peter Strauch had 3 assists each. Other players with goals, were Marc Chicoine, Jonathan Gruber, Andy Kotval, Clay McCormicik and Connor Smith. Max Brownlee and Marc Chicoine each had 2 assists. Gruber and Smith each added another. That is 9 of the 14 skaters were on the scoreboard in the very first game. And the others contributed to the win. GREAT work. Netminder, Sean Fitzpatrick turned away 14 of the 15 shots on our goal. We managed 35 shots on theirs.

Many thanks to Rich Strauch for maintaining the stats again this season.
