SF Grand Prix before the SF Board of Supervisors

from Ryan Chamberlain:
The Board of Supervisors postponed the vote yesterday to next week, which is somewhat good news as it gives them another week to hear our message. It's looking good, but there are never guarantees with this group. My organization (SFSOS) is pushing it harder with our membership, as are a few other civic groups in town. Many of you have contacted Supervisors. Those who yet wish to do so have another week. You might also try writing letters-to-the-editor via letters_at_sfexaminer_dot_com and letters_at_chronicle_dot_com. Public opinion counts.

No Thursday Night Track Racing this week

From Mike Hardaway NCVA President

I just got a call from the ranger on duty this morning. There is still water over the road at the park and it is expected to continue for some days yet and keep the velodrome inaccessible from the front side. Because of the difficulty of staffing the park to properly accommodate back-gate entry for an evening session, the ranger staff is cancelling tomorrow night's planned endurance racing session. We expect to start next week on April 7th.

For people planing on going to the Hellyer Park Velodrome this weekend

Word is that the creek is overflowing the roadway leading to the velodrome in Hellyer Park. When this happens the Park Rangers deem the part of the park where the velodrome is to be closed. No word on when the creek will be back down below the roadway but be warned there is a good chance the velodrome will be closed on Sat morning for the novice track rider session.
Update - From Mark Altamirano the track supervisor for tomorrow - Ah yes, the front road will be closed until Sunday afternoon. HOWEVER, with the support of the park rangers Elias and Phil, we will be able to use the Sylvan Ave (back) entrance. I will post at the front entrance, a map to the back entrance. Participants may also do a Mapquest search for the Sylvandale and Yerba Buena intersection. (Yerba Buena is the nearest crossroad). The only caveat for all this to work is that we need a responsible representative to wait and lock the gate after the last person of the party enters in the morning. Soooo, I will wait at the gate until 8:45 and then will have to lock it. No latecomers please!! I will make sure to have my assistant keep everyone off of the track until I physically return to the track to begin the session. My cell is 415 244-5621.

Good News/Bad News

The San Francisco Chronicle has a story in todays paper about the SF Grand Prix being in trouble. Basically the promoters want/need the city to reduce the fees for police services. At least one SF supervisor is balking at the deal worked out between the SF Mayor and the race promoters. Read all about it here.

There is suppose to be an official announcement about the Tour of California, a UCI level Pro stage race starting in 2006. The event is suppose to be a 9 stage race over 2 weeks probably starting in Northern Calif and ending in S. Cal. Heopefully more details will be available later today.
