Birth | About 19 May 1762 | Probably Massachusetts |
James Ingals was a soldier of the Revolution. Pension application number W.23455 for a James Ingals lists nine children of the applicant, all of whom have the same names and ages as those of the James Ingals who is our ancestor. Pension applicant W. 23455 includes affadavits from James' widow, Abigail Ingals; his brother, Samuel Ingals; and his grandson, George S. Miller. According to the affadavits, James served three "seasons" in the New York militia. According to Abigail's affadavit, James was a private and served in Col. Van Rensselaers Regiment of New York levies under Capts. Turner, Ostrandis, Schermerhorn & others. According to Samuel's affadavit, James served one of his terms under Captain Stephen White. Payroll records, found in the National Archives files, of Capt. Stephen White's company in the Willetts New York Regiment for 1781 list among the company's 42 members a "James Engles." According to the payroll records, James Engles was a private and was paid 23 pounds 2 shillings 2 pence for his service. Research by Matthew Ingalls identifies Willett as Colonel Marinus Willett, under whom served a captain named Stephen White. (Reference on Schenectady history website is to a soldier being "appointed a lieutenant in the nine-months Levies under Colonel Marinus Willett, and was attached to the company of Captain Stephen White.") This is clearly the Stephen White referenced in Samuel's affadavit. New York in the Revolution as Colony and State, a compilation of New York military records many of which were destroyed in a fire at the New York state Capitol in 1911, lists James Ingels as an enlisted man in "the Levies" under "Willett." New York in the Revolution as Colony and State also lists James Ingels as an enlisted man in the Albany County Militia -- Fourth Regiment. This is the Van Rensselaer regiment, according to the National Archives index of Revolutionary War rolls. According to Pioneer & Patriot Families of Bradford County, PA, by Clement F. Heverly, published 1913 by Bradford Star Print, James Ingals followed his sons from Elmira, NY to Wells Township, PA, and settled there in 1822. The book says that "he was a man of high standing in the community." The Wells page of the Bradford County genealogical website provides more detailed information: James Ingals removed from Cooperstown, New York, to Homer, Cortland County, New York in 1803 and in 1809 to Fassett, South Creek township, Bradford County, PA for one year and then to Elmira, Chemung County, New York and to Wells township, Bradford County, PA in 1822/23. His sons, Samuel and William S., had preceded him to Wells in 1817. James d. 1829 perhaps buried Mosherville Cemetery, Wells township. Wife, Abigail d. 14 Feb 1847 89y (ts) Mosherville Cemetery. It is the belief of Paul Ingalls that this material, with the exception of the last two sentences, is from the second volume of the Haverly book. Although the Wells webpage gives James' date of death as 1829, Abigail's pension application lists it as 19 Aug 1828 and we are currently using that date. For explanation of discrepancy in Abigail's date of death, see notes for Abigail below. James' birthdate appears to be 19 May of 1760-1764. This is arrived at by deduction based on the following data: The 1810 Elmira, Tioga County, New York enumeration for the house of James Ingals (Ingels) lists one male and one female over age 45 (At present, this via J. Kelsey Jones). Based on this information, the latest James could have been born was 1764. Revolutionary War pension application on file in Onondaga County Library, Syracuse, New York, citation W23455, by Abigail Ingals for service by James Ingals has brithdate for James but last number is obliterated, indicating he was born 19 May 176?. Based on the above two sources, James was born no earlier than 1760 and no later than 1764. The 1850 census for Cortlandville, Cortland County, New York lists a Samuel Ingals whose personal statistics are consistent with the Samuel Ingals in Abigail Ingals' pension application and is certainly James' brother. This Samuel Ingals' place of birth is listed as Massachusetts. Without other information, we are assuming at this point that James also was born in Massachusetts. An e-mail from J. Kelsey Jones on 4/20/2001 speculates James may be buried in Coryland Cemetery, Wells Township, near his residence. |
Abigail Slade (female) | ||
Birth | 24 Jun 1767 | Unknown |
Name, date of birth, date and place of marriage from Revolutionary War widow's pension application submitted by Abigail on 9 April 1851, based on service by James. Date of death reported by J. Kelsey Jones as 1847 based on tombstone in Mosherville Cemetery, Bradford County, PA. We have accepted this as an error, however, based on pension application and have settled on 1857. |
