Benjamin Ingalls (male) | ||
Father | 16 Oct 1791 | William Slade Ingalls |
Mother | 20 Nov 1792 | Catherine Stoner |
Birth | 25 Dec 1819 | Pennsylvania |
Wm. S. Ingalls Bible owned by Paul Ingalls and originally owned by William S. Ingalls provides date of birth. Sarah Marie Ingalls' Alameda County, CA death certificate lists "unknown" for her father. In a letter to James Mack Ingalls dated 12/28/1985 Lawrence Ingalls indicates Sarah Marie Ingalls' mother's name was Mary Anne. The only Mary A. Ingalls in the Bradford County (Wells Township) 1850 census, one year before Sarah's birth, is the wife of Benjamin Ingalls. At this writing, we have been unable to find the family in the 1860 census. The 1870 census for Bradford County, Columbia Township, Pennsylvania lists a woman named M.A. Ingels, of the same age as Mary Anne Ingalls, living adjacent to the H.B. Austin household, which then employed a Sarah Ingels of the same age as Sarah Marie Ingalls. Also listed as living in the Austin household was a James Ingels, of the same age as Mary Ingalls' son James, as recorded in the 1850 census. These people -- Sarah, Mary and James -- are obviously the same, providing further evidence that Sarah's father was Benjamin Ingalls. There is no mention of Benjamin Ingalls in the 1870 Colombia, Bradford County, census, suggesting that he died or separated from the family between 1851 and 1870. It is our belief that Benjamin Ingalls moved from Bradford County, Pa. to Lenawee County, Michigan between 1851 and 1863. We believe he enlisted as a private in the Union Army, D Co. 11th Cavalry Regiment of Michigan on Oct. 1, 1863, then deserted the army at Kalamazoo, Michigan on Dec. 1, 1863. The Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers 1861-65 lists a Benjamin Ingals who enlisted Oct. 1, 1863 at age 43 at Adrian, Lenawee Co. Michigan, then deserted at Kalamazoo, Michigan on Dec. 1, 1863. A parenthetical notation in the record mentions "Ireland," suggesting he may have left for that country. We believe the Benjamin Ingals in the military record and our ancestor is the same person because independent data indicates our Benjamin Ingals would have been 43 on Oct. 1, 1863 (the same age as this enlistee) and because Benjamin's brother, Charles Ingals, is known through various sources to have moved to Morenci, Michigan in 1853. Morenci is in Lenawee County, the same county from which this Benjamin enlisted. |
Mary Anne (female) | ||
Birth | About 1820 | Pennsylvania |
The Alameda County, CA death certificate for Sarah Marie Ingalls lists her mother as Mary Ingalls, birthplace Pennsylvania. In a letter to James Mack Ingalls dated 12/28/1985, Lawrence Ingalls recalls that his grandmother's name was Mary Anne Ingalls, although he identifies his grandfather's name as George. He apparently was not acquainted with either, however, and the name George is not born out in census records. Lawrence Ingalls said Mary Ann lived to be "90 or so." James Mack Ingalls deduced that Mary Anne Ingals' maiden name could have been Knox, since, according to Lawrence, the earlier James Ingalls' middle name was Knox. This is supported by property records from Klamath County, Oregon, which indicate James K. Ingals (note single L) and C.E. Ingals (also single L) involved in several joint land sales. C.E. Ingals is certainly Chauncey Edward Ingals. These property records also confirm information from Chauncey's obituary and other family sources indicating Chauncey stayed with his uncle James in Klamath Falls when he came out from Pennsylvania as a boy. Again, there is no independent confirmation of Mary Anne Ingalls' maiden name at this time. The 1850 census for Bradford County, Wells Township, PA shows Benjamin and Mary A. Ingalls having two children, James and Sophia. This is consistent with the recollections of Lawrence Ingalls as recounted in the letter to James Mack Ingalls indicating that Chauncey Edward Ingalls had an aunt named Sophia and an uncle named James. |

William Slade Ingalls is almost universally identified in written records as William S. Ingalls. It was not until his mother's pension application for widows of Revolutionary War veterans was discovered in 2001 that his middle name was known to us. According to Pioneer & Patriot Families of Bradford County, PA, by Clement F. Heverly, published 1913 by Bradford Star Print, William S. Ingalls (Ingals) was a veteran of the War of 1812 and ran for county commissioner on the Democratic ticket in 1837. He lost to Whig candidate Irad Stevens by a vote of 1,853 to 1,690. The book also states that he came from Elmira, NY, in 1817 to settle in Wells Township, where he "engaged extensively in farming and lumbering; was prominent in the affairs of the town and a man of sterling worth." The 1850 census for Bradford County, Well Township, PA states that he was a farmer and his real estate was valued at $6,000. In the 1860 census, his real estate was valued at $14,000 and his personal property at $1,500. Date of William's death provided by the Ingalls family Bible owned by Alida Craighead of Sacramento, CA. Date of William's birth provided by Wm. S. Ingalls Bible owned by Paul Ingalls. Confirmed by Revolutionary War pension application by Abagail Ingals for service by James Ingals. An obituary for his daughter Sarah indicates that William was a member of the Elmira Masonic Order. Index of Awards on Claims of the Soldiers of the War of 1812 in the New York York Adjutant General's Office in Albany, New York indicates Wm. S. Ingalls was awarded $28 as reimbursement for providing personal weapons and clothing during service in the New York Militia. |
