The vast majority of photographs you see at this web site were taken using an Olympus OM-1 camera with one of three Zuiko lenses; 24 mm, 50 mm or 135 mm. Over 90% of the photographs are from Kodachrome slides (usually Kodachrome 25), the remaining being on Ektachrome.
The original slides were scanned into digital TIFF files with a Nikon Coolscan V-ED, with a minimum of 2048 pixels for the narrow axis, and saved at 360 DPI, 8-bit color depth.
The TIFF originals were then scaled to 640 pixel (maximum) JPEG files (at rather low resolution) for this web site. I can tell you that the original slides and TIFF files are far superior to the JPEGs you see here. Kodachrome has its difficulties with scanning, but the remarkable color saturation and very low grain comes across wonderfully.
In the interest of showing the quality of the scans, I have included a cropped file, DLG00614_detail.jpg, which is the detail of the back of a swallowtail butterfly at the original resolution, but still converted to JPEG. Click here to view the JPEG. Note the texture and detail of the butterfly wing and tiny hairs, even as a JPEG!
This web site is the first selection of my photographs. Only one has been previously published. Beginning around 1990, I began to use color negative film, often at high film speed in order to take photos at night and in caves and for better depth of field with portraits in nature. I will be scanning them over the next few months and adding many to this web site. Please note the photos you see here are only a small selection of my current catalog. Send me an e-mail with your queries for particular topics or plant species.
I offer this selection on my web site for your enjoyment and perhaps business. If you are interested in nature photography, wilderness scenes, and botanical species and vegetation habitat, I'm sure I can be of service. Thank you for visiting, and please feel free to contact me at DwainG@sonic.net .
