Harvest 1999 is Underway for Cline Cellars

The first varietals to arrive at winery were Semillon and Viognier from their Contra Costa County vineyards (August 30th). These two white varietals will most likely be blended into the Côtes D'Oakley - Vin Blanc program, a decision left up to winemaker Matt Cline and his production team.

Semillon Grapes from Contra Costa County...first grapes for the 1999 harvest!

The 1999 harvest was delayed by unseasonably cool weather. Cline Cellars Contra Costa County vineyards, which typically begin harvest the second week in August are ten days late. Arrival of the grapes was sooner than some even predicated due to last week's 90° F plus temperatures, which pushed the grapes to their proper brix levels.

By Labor Day weekend Cline Cellars is expected to have their famous Big Break Zinfandel and Bridgehead Zinfandel crushed. Big Break and Bridgehead yields are minuscule this year, just like the 1998 vintage...remember it is quality that counts not quantity.

Harvest 1999 Update

Wine Country Gets a Light Sprinkle!

The clouds rolled in fast on Wednesday night (9/8) and rain fell over Northern California followed by a lightening storm. Winemaker, Matt Cline enjoyed the light show since it is a rarity to see lightening in Sonoma but would have preferred it another time of the year.
The rain was light and the lightening caused some power failures but had no impact on the '99 harvest. By Thursday afternoon temperatures were in the 80°'s and grapes from Contra Costa County were on their way to Cline Cellars for crushing.

775 tons of grapes have been crushed at Cline Cellars, which is equivalent to approximately 51,925 cases.(9/21/99)

This wine exhibits intense aromas of cherries, and strawberries. Such a versatile food wine, this Vin Gris goes great with spicy Thai and Asian-style foods, is an elegant apéritif wine and don't forget how wonderful this wine accompanies your Thanksgiving feast (only three months away).

Wine Industry News…
Honoring California's most popular planted red grape, Zinfandel, California senators have co-sponsored a resolution in Congress to create a national Zinfandel Appreciation Week in January 2001. The creation of Zinfandel Appreciation Week requires passage by the full Senate and House of Representatives. "We've got a year to get this done," said Rebecca Robinson, executive director of Zinfandel Advocates and Producers, a non-profit educational organization dedicated to advancing the public's knowledge of and appreciation for Zinfandel and its unique place in American culture and history. This Resolution will set the stage for the 2001 Zinfandel Festival in San Francisco, Ca that will also be the 10th Anniversary of the founding of ZAP. To learn more about ZAP send them an e-mail.
