The Countship of Rethel is located twenty-five miles to the northeast of Reims, which is about one hundred miles east northeast of Paris. The countship was held by Louis III de Male, who was also count of Flanders and Nevers.

The Countship of France-Comté is found in eastern France, bounded on the west by Burgundy and on the east by Switzerland. At this time it might have been attached to the princes of the duchy of Burgundy.

The town and Archdiocese of Reims is seventy-five miles west northwest of Paris. It is considered the heart of the champagne producing region and where the kings of France were traditionally crowned, the most famous coronation being that of Charles VII after Joan of Arc helped to recapture the city from the English.

My source for the arms of the town and Countship of Chalon-sur-Saône seems to have been lost, for I can’t find this shield anywhere. In fact, the arms for Chalon-sur-Saone seems to be those I painted for Chalon later. Maybe I was thinking of Chalon-sur-Marne? But that city has arms of a blue shield, a gold cross and a gold fleur-de-lys in each of the four corners, as appears on some of my spearmen. As it is, Chalon-sur-Saone is located about two hundred miles southwest of Paris, so confusion reigns supreme for this coat of arms.
