1996, november 5 - millions of workers protest government's economic policy
russian trade unions staged a one-day general strike to protest unpaid wages. official statistics suggested that nearly one in four workers in the country have not been paid for at least three months. the strike was organized by the russian federation of independent trade unions (rfitu) and involves some 30 million members. a spokesperson for the federation said the strike was a "final warning " to the government to correct the devastation free market reforms have inflicted on the nation's economy.
