Beat Finishes Day 1 of the SWC Tourney in 2nd!

It seems like the Sports for the World's Children (SWC) Tournament always leads to some interesting play and this year is no different. In just the first two games we saw a little bit of everything.

In game 1, the Beat played to an exciting 4-4 tie with HGH. The Beat showed some stellar defense setting HGH down 1-2-3 in the first. In the second, an outfield fly led to a doubled off baserunner. The 4th had D bobbling a popup right into MSGs glove for the out. That was followed by a runner trying to score from second on a single and getting caught in a rundown between third and home then tagged out. There was an infield single with the runner beating the throw to first, but the lead runner getting tagged at the plate on a quick throw from first to home. There was an intentional walk in the 6th to load the bases followed by an inning-ending popup. And the absolute play of the day, a horizontal diving catch by Jacque in short right. Wow!

Game 2 was a 10-7 Beat victory over the Dogs of Summer. Not so much excitement in the field, but Austin turned 7 assists from the mound and struck out the last batter to end the game. The Dogs were set down 1-2-3 three times in the game. Derek Rey came up with 2 huge hits for 4 RBI to lead the team and also turned in a sweet 6-3 double play from short.

The Beat offense was nothing to write home about. The team hit only .361 over the two games and will have to do better tomorrow to get to the final. But their 3 point finish guarantees a berth in the semi-finals tomorrow afternoon.

Here are the standings after day 1:

Excalibur 2-0 4 pts
The Beat 1-0-1 3 pts
Kuronami 1-1 2 pts
Bushwackers 1-1 2 pts
HGH 0-1-1 1 pt
Dogs of Summer 0-2 0 pts

The team starts day 2 at 9:20am at Jackson #2 against the first place Excalibur. The semi-finals start at 11:50am.
