Sherilyn Austin

(1987-1989)

Inaugural Inductee: June 2000

Sherilyn McClure was born in Carmichael, California in May of 1961. She first met Jim Harvey when the two of them traded positions with the Social Security Administration in 1980, Jim moving to Sacramento and Sherilyn moving to San Francisco. She was followed closely by soon-to-be husband Kevin. It was at the San Francisco Taraval Social Security Office that she met then co-worker Dennis "O.B." O'Brien. It was through Sherilyn that the team's three founders were brought together some 20 years ago.

Sherilyn was one of the pre-Beat volleyballers that played at Parkside in the mid-'80's. She became one of the original members of the Beat in 1987. In 1988, she hung up her glove and became the official scorekeeper and team den-mother.

Sherilyn died on New Years Day 1990 from complications resulting from an auto accident a month earlier. That same year, she became the first team member to have her uniform number retired. A memorial plaque was created in her honor and can be seen in the team's 1990 Old-Timer's game photo.
