Board Games

  • The Allowance Game
    From Lakeshore/Toys to Grow On
    Ages 5 & Up

Kids say it's "awesome," but it just so happens to be a dynamite learning tool as well. The premise is simple— players begin the game with an allowance of $3 each, which increases or decreases as they tour the board— but it's so much more.

As a parent, I like the nature of the game. It's not excessive in materialism or competition, as other money-based games can be. The dollar amounts are moderate, and likely to reflect a young child's actual spending experience— $1.35, for example, rather than hundreds or thousands. And no one is ever forced out of this game; if a player hasn't the means to pay on a space, they go back to square one and start with a new allowance.

As a teacher, I like the fundamentals presented. The entire game is clearly developed on sound financial principals. Players earn money far more often than they simply receive it, and the object of the game is to save $20. One space is the "bank," where players first leave a deposit and later collect interest. One lucky player can invest $1 in a lemonade stand, while those who follow become customers. There is even an opportunity to give to charity. Of course, playing provides constant practice in calculation and making change, while kids build a real sense of cause and effect. Absolutely outstanding in every way!
