Old Adobe School is a private, non-profit organization without any religious affiliations; managed and guided by a board of directors consisting of parents, teachers, the director, and involved members of the community.
As the name suggests, Old Adobe was founded in 1980 in a historic adobe building believed to have been built by General Vallejo over 150 years ago. The school was started by John Larson, a single parent still currently on the board, who felt the need for a school in Sonoma which could offer children a supportive environment with quality instruction and unpressured regard for the individual. In 1989, the school moved to its new home on Spain Street on the grounds of the First Congregational Church.
Old Adobe School includes a preschool as well as a kindergarten with extended day-care available for both classes. While separate age levels are given different appropriate instruction, there is frequent opportunity for children to interact with other ages during our outside time, music time, special holidays and festivities. Younger children imitate and learn with this sort of exposure and older children have a chance to be looked up to, extend themselves in a helpful way, and feel more valued and mature.
