Networking: Why should I?
How do I do it? - Part 2

But first, how would you like to:
  1. Get three FREE handbooks that will give you an in-depth overview on Network and Information Security as well as Intrusion Detection?
  2. Supercharge your Internet Browser?
  3. Have email capability for everyone on your network with just one Internet account and receive all of the mail for the entire network, quickly, easily, and efficiently?
  4. Automatically track the traffic to and from your cable modem?
You can do all of this and more by visiting officehelper.com at least once a week and clicking on "Newz You Can Use". New EVERY week, here is where we post the 'best of the best' when it comes to top tips, hot links and dazzling downloads. And we often throw in some humor (like we did this week) that is sure to make you chuckle! Check it out now by clicking here, but don't forget to come back and finish reading this article!

In Part 1, we pointed out many of the benefits and advantages of networking including information about what components you'll need to set one up in your home or office and what you can expect to pay for them (it's actually very affordable). We also instructed you to prepare a schematic diagram of your proposed network. Click here to see an example of a network schematic.

Now that you're ready to set up your LAN (local area network), let's get started. The first step is to purchase all of the components.

Checklist:

  1. One NIC (network interface card) for each computer on your LAN.
  2. CAT 5 networking cable
  3. The hubs and/or switches you'll need to connect everything together.
[NOTE: If you are networking just two computers, you can eliminate the hub or switch, but you will need to make sure that use what is known as a 'cross-over' network cable. Unfortunately, you'll have to build one yourself (click here for a schematic ) which most of you won't want to do, so I recommend that you go ahead and buy a hub or switch. If you want a cross-over cable, email me and I'll do it for you.] .

I just finished doing some research on networking and in so doing, I ran across a great website that is very comprehensive when it comes to providing you with all of the information you'll need to finish installing and setting up your network. So rather than make this a lengthy article, I'm going to 'cheat' just a bit and provide you with a link to this site.

It provides a great deal of information and is easy to navigate. It has tons of information and links about all types of networks including fiber optic, wireless and USB. There are FAQ's (frequently asked questions) and details about how to configure your network that you'll find under the heading 'Card Setup'. I'm pointing this out because I found it to be inappropriately named (it should have been titled Network Setup).

So, finish connecting and setting up your network by clicking here. Be sure to keep in mind that the MAXIMUM distance between computers and hubs/switches is 330 feet.

That's it for this issue. We, at Office Helper, appreciate the opportunity to bring you Everything Office. Don't forget to check out this week's Newz You Can Use on our website.

Thanks!
Rich Poremba
