2000 Click here EVERY week to discover the most
useful and informative websites and tips we can find to help you get things
done faster and smarter.
WINDOWS SHORTCUTS
There are many "fast" ways to get around in Windows that
will save you lots of time. Here are a few of the most useful.
Windows Explorer: Right-Click on START then left-click on EXPLORE to open
Windows Explorer.
Find a file or folder: Right-Click on START
then left-click on FIND to open the search window.
System
Properties: While pressing the ALT key, double-click MY COMPUTER to open
the System Properties window that tells you all about your computer.
Switch between programs: If you have more than one program
running at the same time, press and hold the ALT key with your thumb and use
your index finger to press the TAB key to quickly switch between them.
Close a program: Press ALT and F4 to close the current
application which you are using. If the current application is the Taskbar,
this also exits Windows after you give confirmation.
PRINT YOUR CURRENT SCREEN!
There are
occasions when you'll wish (or want) to be able to print out (or send via the
Internet, or even fax) exactly what you are seeing on your monitor at a
particular moment. Here's how:
1) Press the PRINT SCRN (Print Screen)
button on your keyboard. On standard keyboards, you find this key along the top
row of keys on the right. This copies what you see on your monitor to the
Windows Clipboard. 2) Open any word processor (except NotePad) such as
Word, Word Perfect, Word Pro or Windows WordPad. 3) From the menu bar at
the top, click EDIT, then PASTE, or even faster, simply press the CTRL key and
the 'V' key on your keyboard. This pastes the contents of the Clipboard into
your word processor.
From here, you can save the file and then send it
as an email attachment (consider using Windows WordPad if you're planning on
this, just in case your email recipient doesn't have the word processor you are
using). You can also print it out for your own use or fax it directly from your
computer (if you have a modem and fax software installed).
HACKING & FIREWALLS
Just in case you
missed this tip, we're going to keep it posted for one more week.
One
of the areas we are all concerned about is "Am I being hacked?". The answer is
a 99% YES and you don't even know it! This is particularly applicable if you
have a cable modem, DSL, T1 or other direct connection to the Internet. Most
hacks are probably not malicious. Many are the result automatic scans, however
you are vulnerable and you should have a firewall installed! In other words,
without a firewall, anyone who knows how, can easily obtain personal
information about you including, credit card numbers, bank account balances,
and so forth.
Also, some malicious hackers may not care about your
personal information, but may be looking for a computer to use to for a 'denial
of service' attack against other systems or as a means of forwarding a virus.
So, what can you do to prevent this? Click
here to go to a
website where you not only get a FREE firewall, but you can use it to test your
existing firewall or the freebie you should download and install.
Remember, check back here again next week to get the BEST OF THE
BEST!
