September News

Did you watch the Olympics? The greatly expanded television and on-line coverage gave more people than ever the chance to share in the USA athletes triumphs and disappointments. Of course for Equestrian sport enthusiasts, what could top our US Show Jumping Team’s Gold Medal performance! A cliff hanger of a competition, the US and Canada was tied at the end of the final round and a jump off was held. In Show Jumping, the jump-off goes to the cleanest rounds, then the fastest times so action was fast and furious, while three US riders went clean over a foreshortened course with jump over 5 feet high. The Canadian team had great fast times, but 4 faults, giving the gold medal to the US.

In Dressage and Eventing, the US teams placed 4th and 7th, and Gina Miles of the US won the individual Silver medal in the Eventing competition. Overall it was an exciting 10 days of top-notch equestrian events. If you missed it, the complete video coverage is still available on line.

Need someplace to go in all that new finery? The Redwood Empire Quarter Horse Association is sponsoring the team penning and ranch hand sorting events at the Mendocino County Fair & Apple Show. These events will be held on September 13 at the fairgrounds in Booneville. REQHA will also be holding two Gymkhana Playdays at the Redwood Valley Arena on September 20 & October 18. This is a great time for all ages, Ribbons awarded and prizes for Hi Point of the day. For more information on these events contact Bobbie Tilley at 485 8749.

Another great event for a great cause – the Ridgewood T.R.A.I.L. annual ride at Ridgewood Ranch, of Seabiscuit fame, still has openings. The ride will be held on October 4th, and offers a choice of three beautiful rides, a BBQ with live music, raffles (including one for the playhouse that was on display at the Redwood Empire Fair). This fun event benefits the T.R.A.I.L. program that offers therapeutic horseback lessons for all children who can benefit, and relies upon YOUR donations and time to make it happen. For information or to download an entry form, click here. For further news about the happenings at Ridgewood T.R.A.I.L., check this out, and make plans to attend this special event!

One more event - September 13 & 14 popular Dressage clinician Jec Ballou returns to Lake County. Jec is an outstanding instructor, working with all kinds of horses and riders. This clinic usually is full with a waiting list, but at this very busy time of the year there are actually openings for a few more riders. For more information about Jec see her website, and for more information about the clinic or to sign up, contact coordinator Kate Schmidt-Hopper.

Enjoy the last of summer, and the first of Fall – and don’t forget to come into Rainbow with your Equine Senior Coupon before September 7!

Happy Trails!

News from Ridgewood T.R.A.I.L.
Teaching Riding as an Access to Independence and Learning

A sweet story:  Erin Livingston, who was one of the originators of the Ridgewood T.R.A.I.L. program as a 4-H program about 15 years ago, has returned as a full-time instructor.  Erin grew up, left to see the world, apprenticed at a few outstanding hippotherapy riding programs in the San Diego area and realized that teaching physically and emotionally challenged people was her passion and future career.  We were delighted when she accepted our offer to return to T.R.A.I.L. as our full time instructor.

This year we received a grant from the Ericksen Foundation which was used for a summer camp in August for foster children and at
-risk children.  We hope to do the same next year.  We also received a small grant from Sonoma Community Foundation, Trail Blazers, to help with the maintenance of the horses and program.

We also have a Norwegian Fjord who loves her job of pulling a cart.  Erin is teaching cart driving to some of the students.  Future plans are underway for a vaulting program as well.

We are also looking get some type of covering for our arena so we can offer our services year round.

The raffle for a side of beef and the playhouse raffle at the fair has been successful and very helpful in keeping the program going. T
he playhouse which was on display at the Redwood Empire Fair, will be raffled off at the Ride on October 4.

Underway, and offered to the public, is a program whereby a person can donate a corral to a person/horse/animal they wish to remember.  The corral will be marked with the names of donor and the parties to be remembered. (We currently have temporary electric fencing for the therapy horses that very much needs replacing for the safety of the horses and children
.)

Many thanks for all your help with this awesome program.    The program is open to all children who can benefit from it.

Phyllis Smoller (489-5102) or Ellen Bartholomew (459-5640).
