The weather might be chilling off, but the happenings are heating up! With the Holidays approaching, there’s lots of special dates to mark on the calendar.

Mendocino Spay & Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) will be holding their fundraising PET PHOTOS WITH SANTA at the Ukiah Rainbow store on Saturday November 21 from 10 AM to 3 PM. Come in with your pets and get a fun photo with Santa for only $15.00! Nutro Pet Foods will be providing special coupons and offers to all participants, and Rainbow will give 10% off on any purchase that day to those who get their photo taken. SNAP has been in existence since 1991. The all-volunteer group raises money to financially help low income persons and those who do rescue work to spay or neuter their dogs and cats. SNAP usually helps with over 1000 procedures a year! As an all volunteer organization, only 3% of the money they take in goes to expenses – 97% goes to pay for spay and neuter services. Pet Photos with Santa is a fun experience – over the years they have taken photos with good old Saint Nick and dogs, cats, bunnies, ferrets, parrots, llamas, iguanas … and I’ll bet if you show up with your horse, Santa will come outside for a special photo! That’s November 21st, from 10 AM to 3 PM at the Ukiah Rainbow store.

Another big date: Thursday December 3rd! It’s Rainbow’s Invitation Only Holiday Party. The fun starts at 6:30 PM in the evening – Both Rainbow stores will be open late for a very special Fashion Show! Three excited young Rabbit aficionados are on their way to the National Convention and Show in San Diego starting October 30. Alicia Welling, Jessica Crowhurst and Colton Pinson all qualified for the Convention, which is the largest rabbit show in the United States, with well over 10,000 rabbits and cavies and over 100 judges! Learn more about these hard-working young people and what it takes to get to the top.

Volunteer for Horse Rescue in Lake County Needed: The Clearlake Police Department no longer contracts with Animal Control on equine cases, so a Sonoma County rescue group, SAFER has offered to help with caring for seized horses, but they need to find a horse person in the Clearlake area that could work as a liaison with the City of Clearlake – perhaps offer transportation, housing and care for one or more horses in crisis. Hi Rainbow Customers,
I would like to thank all the customers who have been so kind to give me their feedback and comments. Several of you mentioned that you would like to see Cowgirl Tuff apparel in our stores. Well, I am delighted to tell you that we  are now a vendor for Cowgirl Tuff. Our first order of shirts and jeans is on it's way to the Ukiah store.  In addition, some of you have requested that Rainbow carry camo and bright colored horse blankets.  We have great selection of fun camo and colorful blankets on the way. Finally, I am excited to share with you that Rainbow Ag will be carrying a selection of english tack in both stores.  This month I will be attending the Redwood Riders board meeting on November 6th and the saddle fitting clinic held by the Lakeport Dressage Chapter on November 21. Tis’ the Season for Harvest Mites
From the Veterinarians at Middletown Animal Hospital

Harvest mites, also knows as “chiggers”, are the larvae of the mite Trombicula alfreddugesi. They are an orange-red, eight-legged mite that can cause considerable itchiness and dermatitis in all animals, including humans. These little buggers come out end of summer or beginning of fall in this area. We predominantly have been seeing infestations in horses, cat, and dogs. Harvest mites are scavengers that live on decaying vegetable material and plants.  The eggs are laid on moist ground and hatch into larvae that dig the hooks of their mouths into the animal’s skin to feed. They feed for three to four days before dropping off of the host to develop into adults. The larvae are the only parasitic form. The mites cause problems is during their feeding process on the host. They inject fluid into the skin that causes inflammation and intense itchiness, which can also lead to secondary bacterial infections if unrecognized early.

Harvest mites search for areas of warmth, which they find with their hosts (animals or people). They move all over the host until they find a site that they can hide and feed for a few days. Most often, these are areas of thin skin. In horses, the mites seem to prefer the area under the chin, belly, along the neck, and legs.  You can almost never see the mite, but instead notice hives and areas of scabs with serum discharge.
