Michael Shapiro's
2006 Events

Sat. Nov. 4, 2006, 10am-4pm, Book Passage, Corte Madera, Calif.
"Making a Living as a Freelance Writer" will be the subject of this intensive class with Michael Shapiro. A contributor to the New York Times, Washington Post and National Geographic Traveler, Shapiro will discuss strategies and techniques for earning a living from one's writing. Topics include finding your niche, developing professional relationships with editors, targeting potential markets (publications), and self-syndication. The course also covers writing query letters, getting your first piece published, differences between writing for magazines and newspapers, and using photography to supplement your income. Travel writing has been Shapiro's emphasis during the past decade, and a segment of the course will follow a travel story from pitch to publication. Though some emphasis is on travel writing, the course should be valuable for all writers aspiring to get more of their work published. The cost is $95. For more information or to sign up, contact Book Passage at (800) 999-7909.
