PRESENTATIONS

2004 Human Performance Technology (HPT) Conference

September 2004
Woodlands Conference Center,
Williamsburg, VA
Co-presenter: Joseph Volk, Instructional Designer, Tracen Petaluma Instructional Support Team (IST)

DVL mTech: Coast Guard Mobile EPSS

Abstract:

The Digital Voice Logger mobile Technician (DVL mTech) is a Flash/XML-driven, Pocket PC-based electronic performance support system (EPSS) used by Coast Guard Information Systems Technicians (ITs) to troubleshoot DVLs in the field. See DVL mTech at http://www.tracenpetaluma.com/mTech/.

The mTech approach, which puts vital information at the point of need, exemplifies appropriate application of the HPT methodology by using job aids in place of traditional commit-to-memory instruction.

In this brief presentation we will discuss the factors behind DVL mTech development, the enormous potential of these types of performance support tools for the Coast Guard, DVL mTech system architecture and technical implementation, and plans for expanding the technology to other applications.
