FALL 2019
EA105 SESSION DETAILS

Week 1

Session 01 Wed Aug 28 – Orientation

Seating format: Sit wherever you wish.

Before class: Read with care the course syllabus and "Syllabus, Part 2".

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Lorem.

In class: I will provide an outline of the course, and cover SOME of the syllabus content. However, you are responsible for the full content, including "Syllabus, Part 2" and not at some point during the term but more or less immediately. I test syllabus context at times.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session except consolidate your notes for the day.

Session 02 Fri Aug 30 – Orientation (continued)

All is the same as the previous session.

Week 2

Note 1: This week we begin reading in earnest. We cover material QUICKLY. Expect the reading assignments for this class to be HEAVY until the Theory / Method sessions (there are six of them) are finished and the midterm on the book behind us. There is no review day before the exam so you should master the concepts as you go along, not wait to assemble it all towards the end. There is just too much to make that plan workable, even if the plan was to stay up through the night. ... The following chapters on ATS (authoritative thought systems) are shorter and less abstract. You will perhaps think that reading is somewhat easier. And the chapters are shorter. This reading comes in stages, not one-after-the-other, as we begin screening films at the same time. In short, the heaviest reading and in some ways the most difficult material is associated with the Theory / Method portion of the course.

Note 2: I sketch out the entire course flow at the beginning of the term, then adjust it as we progress through the class, based on our learning objectives. I create the next week's schedule during the weekend before that week. When the schedule is not updated, refer to the Google Drive backup calendar and if still not clear, email me.

No class Mon Sept 2 – Labor Day

Session 03 Wed Sept 4 – Theory / Method (1 of 6)

Seating format: We sit in a big circle. Sit wherever you wish. Please help build the circle at the beginning of class, and restore the room to its original seating arrangement at the end.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • For all of the next Theory / Method sessions, the expectation is that you will "look over" the chapters listed for that day well enough to get a sense of the basics. Read the abstract with care. Read further into the chapter as necessary to understand the abstract well. This is important because we need to cover a good deal of ground each day. Not knowing the basic groundwork for the day will slow down everyone. "Getting a sense of the basics" = what key terms and principles are involved and why are they significant to us? ("Significance" questions will be core to the class.) By the way, what are our learning objectives?
  • Interpreting Love Narratives (ILN): Chapters 1-3 could be skimmed to get a sense of what type of book ILN is. The assigned reading is the abstracts of SO/M material (Chpts. 3-6) with further reading as necessary to understand the content of the abstracts well enough to be able to use the concepts and terms in exercises.
  • Read the syllabus and look over Syllabus, Part 2 if you have not already done so. If you have time to only look at key portions of Syllabus, Part 2, here is a suggested reading list: All black text boxes. Note bolded font if you have time. Active 1 (the first page and a little: up unit "and useful to others"). Active 4 (skim) . Active 5 (skim) . Devices 1. Devices 2. Integrity, skim. Accommodations, if relevant. If English is not your first language, if relevant. Grades 9. Grade 10 (skim) . 12.6 Assignment titles. Things that affect grades (skim).

In class:

  • Note that reading checks (RC, a type of quiz) are always possible (including syllabus content) and will be used to measure knowledge and engagement for the final course grade. I prefer to avoid RC when possible so I try to get a sense as to whether students are reading. When I think they are not, I begin quizzing for a while.
  • I might make comments on key points, present material, and probably facilitate exercises to help with comprehension of this material.
  • I will NOT summarize the material. Skipping the reading and hoping it will be covered in class will leave you very short of a sufficient understanding. Just intuitively, I probably mention in class about 20-30% of the content. You need to obtain the rest through your reading skills, asking questions, and working out issues inside exercises.

After class:

  • bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page.
  • You should work with the sheet given out on the second day of class and begin to write onto it your understanding of each term. This should help you keep track of what you do and do not know. These terms will be used for every session, all the way to the end of the course.

Session 04 Fri Sept 6 – Theory / Method (2 of 6)

Seating format: We sit in a big circle. Sit wherever you wish. Please help build the circle at the beginning of class, and restore the room to its original seating arrangement at the end.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • The assigned reading is the ILN abstracts of the chapters that take a closer look at patterns (Chpts. 7-9); as well as Ending interpretation (Chpt. 10).

In class:

Same as above: Keep the possibility of RC in mind. And, as before, I might make comments on key point, present material, and probably facilitate exercises to help with comprehension of this material.

After class:

  • bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page.
  • Same as above: I recommend you work with the sheet given out on the second day of class and begin to write onto it your understanding of each term. This should help you keep track of what you do and do not know. These terms will be used for every session, all the way to the end of the course

Week 3

This week we continue with the reading in theory. Most will be finished by the end of the week. There will be one more session for the next Monday, and the midterm is one week from this Wednesday. There is no review period ahead of the midterm so keep reading now and ask questions as you go along.

I sketch out the entire course flow at the beginning of the term, then adjust it as we progress through the class, based on teaching goals. I create the next week's schedule the weekend before that week. When the schedule is not updated, refer to the Google Drive calendar.

Seating format: "Big circle." Bring your name tags. (James, you need to make a new one. Stella, please make one.)

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • The assigned reading is the ILN abstracts of Bounded dialogue (Chpt. 11) and Love (Chpt. 12) and any reading within the chapters that interests you or helps you understand the abstracts.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session except consolidate your notes for the day.

Week 4

This week is a transition: we finish reading about theory and method, test that understanding with a midterm, then move on to learning about the analysis reports that will be due in this class. The reading for Friday is extensive or easy, depending on your skimming skills.

I sketch out the entire course flow at the beginning of the term, then adjust it as we progress through the class, based on teaching goals. I create the next week's schedule the weekend before that week. When the schedule is not updated, refer to the Google Drive calendar.

Session 08 Mon Sept 16 – Theory / Method (6 of 6)

Seating format: "Big circle." Bring your name tags.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Read with care ILN Chpts 15-16.

In class: We will discuss a few of the main points of these chapters.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *Begin to get organized for test study.

Session 09 Wed Sept 18 – Midterm 01 (MT01): Theory & Method

NOTE: Sept 18, 11:59PM is the add/drop/swap/change deadline.

Seating format: There will be a seating chart, and the test will start on time. Come early if possible and locate your correct seat.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Study for the midterm. Refer to the EA105Fa19 Session 2 Overview Doc and the EA105Fa19 MT01 example questions.docx to help prepare. As I stated in class: There will be a mix of short-answer "provide the definition" type questions and somewhat longer answer "explain why we care / significance to the course goals" questions. Note that I might as you to state the course goals.

In class: Closed-book, no devices midterm. You will have some limited ability to select among various prompts. The test takes the full time period. You can leave when finished, unless it is after 2:55 in which case you need to wait for the end of class. You cannot leave and return during the class. If you need to leave, give me your test and I will grade however much you completed. It is not possible to make up this exam.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session.

Session 10 Fri Sept 20 — Method: IA and CDE charts (1)

Seating format: "Lecture mode."

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • We begin to practice the IA and CDE forms. Skim ILN Chpts 17-20—basically you are learning the guidelines for the interpretive projects, so the reading should be towards that practical purpose. This is not like the theory reading where there needed to engage in some deeper thought to develop connections between aspects of the theory.
  • Print out and bring to class all the documents in bCourse > Files > IA diagrams, except for #2 which you have already practices. That is a total of five different files to print out. You might need to work on these and submit them. Or, you might simply need to take notes on them.

In class: This is the first of two sessions devoted to understanding the reports you will complete.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session except consolidate your notes for the day.

Week 5

We start our consideration of WV. Until now we have discussed theory and method, but not cultural content. Now we begin gathering cultural knowledge.

I sketch out the entire course flow at the beginning of the term, then adjust it as we progress through the class, based on teaching goals. I create the next week's schedule the weekend before that week. When the schedule is not updated, refer to the Google Drive calendar.

Session 11 Mon Sept 23 — Method: IA and CDE charts (2)

Seating format: Return to the group seating you had on Friday. Please keep the rows straight and clear of bags so I can walk through the room.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • There is no reading assigned except review of Chapters 17-23 to capture the overall rules of completing IA and CDE. Some of these are mentioned as we practice, but not all (such as the "compound rule") and, whether mentioned in class or not, whether mentioned in instructions are not, they are part of the grading rubric. So gather from these chapters what you need to know to complete the projects. ... If you want to read ahead for  Wednesday / Friday, read Chpts 24-25 that introduce Western WV and cover Greek thought. We cover Chapter 24 and some of Chapter 25 on Wednesday.

In class: At the end of Monday's session, each member of the group will submit the hard copies of their diagrams. This is an ungraded exercise but very useful for getting used to the process.

  • You will not be submitting the contract.
  • You will submit a love spiral, a ToM-and-its-contexts and a topical intensity+status chart.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session except consolidate your notes for the day.

Session 12 Wed Sept 25 — WV: Greek views on truth, beauty and desire (1)

Seating format: Start with "lecture mode."

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Read Chapter 24 for the basic ideas. Read with care Chapter 25 in full. The reason you are to read all of Chpt 25 now is that I hope we can finish this topic in one session, not two. Do not skip this reading. Students sometimes don't see the point of beginning with Western concepts but then, later, tell me they now see why it was important. We want to get to the movie viewing segment of the class and if students have read well, this can can move us forward one day towards that goal.

In class: This is mostly lecture, with some discussion.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session except consolidate your notes for the day.

Session 13 Fri Sept 27 — WV: Greek views on truth, beauty and desire (2)*

Seating format: Free seating initially. I will rearrange the seating as necessary.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Reread with care the chapter on Greek thought, if you are taking the quiz on that Chapter. Review all the terms on the theory overview page, if you are taking that quiz on that.

In class: 2:10-2:35, quiz on Greek thought. 2:35-2:40, transition time. 2:40-3, quiz on theory and method. See announcement for details.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session except consolidate your notes for the day.

Week 8

We have arrived at a turning point in the class. You should read these introductory comments and take a look at Week 9. This will give you a full view of how a "unit" (this one on Daoism) works.

We have finished our work on theory and Western WV and now turn our attention to East Asian WV, pairing them with films and film analysis (the individual work of the IA & the group work of the CDE).

For the remainder of the term you will be expected to ...

  • read the relevant ILN chapter(s) with care and connect its content to the projects for this course
  • read the relevant sonic.net background material on the films
  • complete the careful viewing of the films outside of class
  • submit the IA on time so you are eligible for CDE membership and of course come to the session where CDE work begins.

You will take a series of midterms (three) on East Asian WV and these will be very important for your course grade. Scoring well relies on your ability to read and comprehend the relevant ILN chapters.

I sketch out the entire course flow at the beginning of the term, then adjust it as we progress through the class, based on teaching goals. I create the next week's schedule the weekend before that week. When the schedule is not updated, refer to the Google Drive calendar.

Session 20 Mon Oct 14 — WV: Ancient Chinese Cosmology (ACC) & Daoism: Yin-yang and sexual alchemy

Seating format: Sit in "Lecture mode".

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • There is nothing to do for this session. However, you will be tested on ILN chapters on Wednesday and if you read the overview and Daoism chapter ahead of time, my lecture will make a little more sense.
  • Sexual alchemy is a topic that covers sexual activity explicitly. In class I will only give the basics. There should be more material on bCourse if you want greater details. It is sexually explicit. It is not required reading.

In class: Lecture on items related to ancient Chinese cosmology and Daoism, some of which are not in ILN.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session except consolidate your notes for the day.

Session 21 Wed Oct 16 — Midterm on ILN Chapters 27 and 28.

Seating format: There will be a seating chart.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Read with care ILN chapters 27 and 28 to prepare for the midterm. This assessment is a key component of the knowledge portion of the final course grade portfolio. It is, in short, very important to your final grade. You should prepare well. Remember that I won't asks for lists. Instead, I'll ask for significance of something with relation to the course themes and goals. This is deductive reasoning on your part, based on your knowledge of the course until now. The test will be one essay question. You will not have a choice as to which to choose and you will need to answer the question asked, not turn it towards an area you feel more confident about. ... This is the first of three such midterms. There will be similar ones on Confucianism and Buddhism.

In class: 30-minute exam starting promptly on time. You will have only until 2:40 to complete the exam, regardless of the start time.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session except consolidate your notes for the day.

Session 22 Fri Oct 18 — Introduction of "X" and "X-like" formulas, ATS, ATS-fragment, Orphaned Derivative (OD) Time permitting, a discussion of "natural love"

Seating format: Small groups although there may, ultimately, be no group discussions on this day.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • There is a one-paragraph long assignment due on "natural love."
  • Review ILN about X, X-like, fragments and derivatives. Get clear that derivatives are farther from the idea source than are fragments. This material might be quizzed at the beginning of class.

In class: Lecture, discussion, and perhaps in-class exercises around these topics.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is an extra credit opportunity. See the Monday session of Week 9.

Week 9

We screen and work with the film 2046 this week.

I sketch out the entire course flow at the beginning of the term, then adjust it as we progress through the class, based on teaching goals. I create the next week's schedule the weekend before that week. When the schedule is not updated, refer to the Google Drive calendar.

Session 23 Mon Oct 21 — Screening "2046" (Hong Kong, 2004)

Seating format: The first 10 minutes is seating arranged by me. After that "movie viewing" mode. I would like to remind students that this mode means sitting in a way that is thoughtful for the people behind one.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Most of our films have background information that you are to read and might be quizzed on before we begin screening a film. These pages are found on the sonic top page, towards the bottom of the page. In the case of this film, navigate to "2046" and read the first three of four "first session" pages. You can navigate to these using the left-hand column links. Note that there is considerable material available on these pages, including links to music and such, summaries of all the film scenes, and so on. Enjoy.

In class: The first 10 minutes of class are for reading checks (viewing checks) of "Days of Being Wild" and/or "In the Mood for Love." If you want to participate in one or both of these, come to class at 2:10, on-time. We will move quickly. If you do not want to participate, please wait in the hall until 2:20. The remainder of the class is screening "2046" with commentary by me.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session except consolidate your notes for the day.

Session 24 Wed Oct 23 — Continue screening "2046" (Hong Kong, 2004)

*Attendance of this session is sort of optional: If you don't feel you want or need to hear my commentary on the film, you can skip this session and view the film on your own. Sometimes I say nothing, other times I might be rather detailed in my comments. I will not take roll.

Seating format: "Movie-viewing" mode.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Nothing to do if you have read the sonic pages already. If not, you need to do so. If you make statements on your IA that contradict this material, it can be a substantial grade negative.

In class: Film screening with commentary.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *Your IA on 2046 will be due soon based on the contract I will release later. If you do not submit an IA your grade on both the IA and the CDE is zero, because you will not be assigned to a group. You will have a chance to write an essay on a topic I selected, for partial credit.

Session 25 Fri Oct 25 — Group work on "2046"

Seating format: Small groups determined by me.

Before class:

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Your IA is due. If you do not submit an IA your grade on both the IA and the CDE is zero, because you will not be assigned to a group. You will have a chance to write an essay on a topic I selected, for partial credit.

In class:

  • RC on 2046. If you have not viewed the film with care and in full, your IA grade is reduced.
  • Following the RC, small group work for the CDE on 2046 begins.

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *You need to meet with your group and complete the CDE.

Week 10

I sketch out the entire course flow at the beginning of the term, then adjust it as we progress through the class, based on teaching goals. I create the next week's schedule the weekend before that week. When the schedule is not updated, refer to the Google Drive calendar.

Session 26 Mon Oct 28 — Canceled

Note: Class was canceled due to PG&E power outage.

  • Check this page for what to do in preparation for class. This is an active learning class. Preparation is expected and critical. Check bCourse announcements. Stay attentive to assignment due dates.
  • Read the materials on bCourse with regard to Korean "han" well enough to obtain a complex understanding of the basic definition of this term.

In class: We did a reading check on the "han" material. Then I began screening "The Housemaid" (Seoul, 1960).

After class: bCourse assignments are not listed here—see your bCourse calendar feed or our bCourse home page. *There is nothing in particular that you are expected to do after this session. HOWEVER, you are invited to finish viewing "The Housemaid" and, if you are interesting, submit an extra credit assignment that compares "han" in the 1960 and 2011 versions of this film.

Session 28 Fri Nov 1 — MT03 on Confucianism

Seating format: There will be a seating chart.

Before class:
