For me:

This page is updated AS THE CLASS PROGRESSES and not just before a session. Content can change after a session to better reflect what had happened. (However, this "after-the-fact" revising is a casual and inconsistent update done only when there is time.)

IF THERE IS NO ENTRY FOR A DAY ("lorem" is still everywhere), USE AS THE OFFICIAL STATEMENT FOR HOW TO PREPARE the Google Sheet version of the schedule titled "Backup schedule" which can be found inside the "G-Drive folder (view only)," or ask me.

Week 1

Notes for this week:

  • Both sessions this week are devoted to orientation, thinking that there might be late arrivals to the class.

Session 01 Wednesday Aug 26 — Orientation

Before session

  • Nothing to do from my perspective. For your own benefit, almost certainly reading the syllabus will increase your grade in this class.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. I am lecturing, describing the class and how it will be run.

After session

  • Nothing to do.

Session 02 Friday Aug 28 — Orientation (continued)

Before session

  • Nothing to do from my perspective. For your own benefit, almost certainly reading the syllabus will increase your grade in this class.
  • However, if you missed Day 1, I require that you view that session and submit the ENGAGE assignment associated with that date.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. Orientation continues: I answer your questions.
  3. Orientation continues: Small group work based on the short videos.

After session

  • Nothing to do.

Week 2

Notes for this week:

  • I have set aside this entire week for us to get to know each other. We get started on course content the week after this one.

Session 03 Monday Aug 31 — Community building

Before session

  • If you missed Day 1, I require that you view that session and submit the ENGAGE assignment associated with that date.
  • You need to have completed all due assignments. If you have not, you cannot participate in the day's activities.
  • Now that we are settled into class, I assume you have read the syllabus. You are bound by the rules and expectations of it.

During session (special for those who said they were interested or willing to meet with overseas students and are in class on this day: Shreya, Natlie, Shannon, Alan, Ryne, Angelina, Michelle Y, Helen)

Here is a description of the assignment for you:

Using the email list provided, connect with each other so that each student has 1) participated in at least two meetings, 2) has meet with six different students, and 3) two of those six students must be Cathy and Jee Ho. The meetings should be 15-30 minutes long (that is, if the group grows larger than 3 it should also be longer than 15 minutes). Everyone but Cathy and Jee Ho will have participated today, so they can explain to the others (that is, Cathy, Jee Ho, and anyone on the above list who is absent) what should be discussed. (You can also just use the list provided at this session details entry.)

The students accepting this assignment do not need to attend Wednesday or Friday. However, they should watch for ENGAGE assignments that would require viewing of the Zoom sessions in case I make announcements or resolve student questions that they should be aware of. If so, it would only be the beginning and/or end of the video, not the full video of course.

During the session (all other domestic students — East Asian students do not need to view this video unless ENGAGE assignments tell them to do so)

You will be joining 2-4 breakout groups today, Wednesday and Friday and, this weekend you will be reporting about those many individuals that you meet. So you should take notes during these breakout sessions.

The breakout session should have this work-flow:

  • a few minutes for everyone to read everyone's profiles (bCourse - Modules), then each student asks one profile-related question to each student. If there are three Student A will ask something to Student B, then Student C. Then it is Student B's turn. They will ask Student A then Student C a question. And so on.
  • Then there is a free-form discussion of cancel culture.
  • Then, if somehow there is still time, try to develop as a group a sophisticated definition of "narrative."

FOR YOUR REFERENCE: Here are the questions you will need to answer for the weekend assignment:

  • Share with me, in simple form, the full list of students you met with. So, for example, if you had only met three students (you will meet more!)
  • Share with me, in list form, something interesting or surprising to you about each of the students you met.  The names on this list should match the names above. As with ALL of my assignments, I take note of the energy and interest you display when answering open-ended questions like this.
  • Share with me the names of students you would be interested in working with as the working group that will find and share a short narrative for this class.

After session

  • Nothing to do officially. However, your weekend assignment will go much faster if you answer it in part now, for today's meetings. You will be doing this again Wednesday and Friday, and your memory of today will fade, so writing it now should result in the least amount of time and effort to finish the work—and probably have better quality, too.

Session 04 Wednesday Sep 2 — Community building

Before session

  • Now that we are settled into class, I assume you have read the syllabus. You are bound by the rules and expectations of it.

During the session (all other domestic students — East Asian students do not need to view the video beyond the opening remarks, unless ENGAGE assignments tell them to do so)

Roll call, then announcements, then the below exercise.

You will be joining 3 breakout groups today — 2:15-2:30, 2:30-2:45, 2:45-3:00. You can leave the class at that point but I will be in the "hallway" for a short time. ... This weekend you will be reporting about those many individuals that you meet, so you should take notes during these breakout sessions.

The breakout session must have this work-flow where "Student A" = the first student in A-Z order, based on the classname:

  • Four silent minutes for everyone to read or reread everyone's profiles (bCourse - Modules, if not there, check "Pages" directly)
  • Then each student asks ONE profile-related question to each student, even if you have met the student before. (If there are three Student A will ask something to Student B, then Student C. Then it is Student B's turn. They will ask Student A then Student C a question. And so on.)
  • Then each student reports the range of ideas they heard of cancel culture on Monday, EXCLUDING one's own ideas or commentary on whether you agree with the ideas you are reporting. Mention the student name if you remember it. If you missed Monday, take a pass on this part of the discussion.
  • Then, develop, as a group, try to develop a sophisticated definition of "narrative."

Session 05 Friday Sep 4 — Community building

Before session

  • If you missed Day 1, I require that you view that session and submit the ENGAGE assignment associated with that date.

During session

  1. Roll call, announcements, then small group work practicing narrative elements and their role in making a narrative.

The task is to write, as a group, a short narrative that is 50 words or less, and according to the instructions released. Your work will be submitted before the end of the class session to EX200904 InC ShortNarr. If you missed the deadline you do not receive credit for today's work. If you submit by 2:57 you are a candidate for an A+ score. NOTE: Your peers, in a separate assignment due Sunday, will read and vote on how interesting your narrative is.

  • Near time zone students who missed class are invited to use the website announced, then perform the role of all three students and submit to the EA Time Zone deadline and will receive partial credit.
  • EA students submit as a group or each separately, their choice, but with a higher score for working together. You can fashion your work flow in a way that more or less mimics what was done in class.

This class session is run by announcements since, once you are in groups, I cannot easily talk to you all at the same time. Watch for class announcements.

After session

  • Complete the weekend assignment. Many of you have already submitted to it. You must resubmit in order to get credit. Watch for changes in the instructions to that assignment.

Week 3

Notes for this week:

  • We begin this week with an introductory session followed by a series of six lectures on narrative elements.

Monday Sep 7 — No class

Session 06 Wednesday Sep 9 — Key definitions

*This session ends at 2:28.

Before session

  • On bCourse Module titled "Some Key Definitions | Narrative Elements" —
    • View and read the small print on the graphic at CODE vs TEXT
    • Read STORY / NARRATIVE / PLOT well enough to be able to tell the class a crisp, easy-to-understand explanation of the difference of the three
    • Read STORY / NARRATIVE / PLOT well enough to say where the emphasis in this class is, and why
    • Read SYNOPSIS / MINI-REVIEW in full, including listening to the song (you will be graded right from the beginning as if you fully understand my expectations for these two)
  • Have access to bCourse: you will have an assignment released at 2:30 that is due at 3 PM.
  • HAVE THE CODE vs TEXT IMAGE OPEN FROM THE START OF CLASS.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call starts immediately and goes quickly.
  2. Introduction and explanation of CODE and TEXT. This is key to our class.
  3. Ask students to explain the differences between STORY, NARRATIVE and PLOT.
  4. Take question on SYNOPSIS / MINI-REVIEW, briefly.
  5. Explanation of in-class assignment.
  6. In-class assignment release.
  7. Shut down the Zoom session at 2:28.
  8. Students, without consulting each other, complete and submit the assignment.

After session

  • Well, if we define the end of the session as when I shut down the Zoom meeting, you have 30 minutes to complete an assignment. Otherwise, there is nothing to do but review on your own the terms covered today if they are still unclear to you.

Session 07 Friday Sep 11 — Introduction to narrative elements, Discussion 1: NARRATOR

*This session ends at 2:28.

Before session

  • On bCourse Module titled "Some Key Definitions | Narrative Elements" —
    • read with care NARRATOR, once it is available.
    • read the Ndi excerpt (it is not at all easy and is most definitely testable material)
  • RESEARCH200909 is due. It represents further research you have done on NARRATOR.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. The first of two in-class exercise begins at 2:12, to end at 2:29. For some groups it might be challenging to get this done in time. You can start working with the list now. See EX200911 InC narrator for access.
  2. The second in-class assignment is released.
  3. Shut down the Zoom session at 2:28.
  4. Students, without consulting each other, complete and submit this second exercise called EX200911 InC Airplane.

After session

  • Well, if we define the end of the session as when I shut down the Zoom meeting, you have 30 minutes to complete an assignment. Otherwise, there is nothing to do but review on your own what you now know about NARRATOR. Making a study sheet now for that will come in useful since it is one of the terms I might ask you about. For example, I might ask for example "What is a homodiegetic narrator"?

Week 4

Notes for this week: The lecture series on narrative elements continues. The add/drop deadline is also this week, I believe, but you should watch your own notices not take my word for it.

Session 08 Monday Sep 14 — Introduction to narrative elements, Discussion 2: CHARACTER, CHARACTER CHANGES

*This session ends at 2:28.

Before session

  • Complete the assignment on CHARACTER.
  • Reminder that if you do not know MLA style or such, this is when you teach yourself. I don't teach this in class but I expect you to know it. This is an upper-division class and this is a skill you should already have. If unsure, there are many websites out there teaching the form (which is not the same thing as an engine that generates the form.) One of the easiest to use is Purdue Online Writing Lab.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Arrive on time, ready to go (which includes being logged in to bCourse). This is a short session so we start quickly.
  2. Roll call will be taken by screen capture, so will happen very quickly. Be present on time.
  3. Content for this session depends on the submissions I will see in the morning.

After session

  • Well, if we define the end of the session as when I shut down the Zoom meeting, you have 30 minutes to complete an assignment.
  • Watch for, then read, the module pages on narrative elements as I develop and publish them.
  • Review on your own what you now know about CHARACTERS and their changes.
  • Continue making a study sheet now based on the shared student submissions, comments in class, and module pages, once released.
  • The submission page for your SSM (Student Selected Material) will be released soon. Begin work on that.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. Content for this session depends on the submissions I will see in the morning. However, I will lecture on what I mean by STRUCTURAL FEATURES. There may be no other information provided on this element than what I say so be sure to attend or listen later to this mini-lecture on the topic.

After session

  • Watch for, then read, the module pages on narrative elements as I develop and publish them.
  • Review on your own what you now know about SETTINGS and STRUCTURAL FEATURES.
  • Continue making a study sheet now based on the shared student submissions, comments in class, and module pages, once released.
  • Continue your search for locating an excellent SSM that your peers would rate as "very interesting, I'm glad to have had a chance to read/view this."

Before session

  • Complete the assignment on THEMES, with care.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. Content for this session depends on the submissions I will see in the morning. NOTE: For some "What is a theme?" isn't a very difficult question. However, misunderstanding what is a theme is one of the most common errors of my students in all my classes. Be sure to participate in this session.

After session

  • Watch for, then read, the module pages on narrative elements as I develop and publish them.
  • Review on your own what you now know about THEMES.
  • Continue making a study sheet now based on the shared student submissions, comments in class, and module pages, once released.
  • Continue your search for locating an excellent SSM that your peers would rate as "very interesting, I'm glad to have had a chance to read/view this."

Week 14

Notes for this week:

  • Because of the Thanksgiving Break, two of the three session are during the holiday break. The Monday session is optional attendance. However, I don't guarantee that there will be a Zoom recording of the session so if you want to hear answers about the essay or final assessment, you should attend. This is true for overseas students as well. While I will make a Zoom recording as always, it is risky perhaps to rely on it.

Session 37 Monday Nov 23 — No class—the time is set aside for writing the analytic essay

*Note: I left this day as an informal one. I think it is good for you to have a chance to ask about essay expectations and I already knew that some of you might be relocating during the Thanksgiving Break. I wanted you to have some time to catch up, or move, or whatever.

Before session

  • Nothing to do for this session. However, I will be in the Zoom room during class so if you want to ask questions, it might be helpful to prepare them ahead of time so we can use our time efficiently. Read the instructions for the final essay. Look at Session 39 to get a sense of the final interview.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. No roll call.
  2. I will be in class to answer your questions about the essay. If there are none, we move on to the final interview questions.
  3. I will answer your questions about the final interview. If there are none, we will end class early.
  4. I will NOT answer questions about the essay or interview in our "virtual hallway."

After session

  • Work on your essay.

Wednesday Nov 25 — No class

Week 15

Notes for this week:

  • Last class. Then assessments begin.

Session 38 Monday Nov 30 — Last day of the class meeting together (attendance optional)

Before session (if you are scheduled for this day)

  • Nothing to do.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. No roll call.
  2. This will be an informal day probably with game-like activities based on the 10 SSM. It is meant to be relaxing and social.
  3. Switch-up: Group 1: Character, Group 2: Narrator, Group 3: pace/rhythm, Group 4: Setting.
  4. Oddity Awards: All groups decide a category.
  5. I will not discuss the final assessment or any other class business on this day.

After session

  • Nothing to do. You are finished with the class! Come to the final get-together if you have time.

Session 39 Wednesday Dec 2 — Individual one-on-one, final assessment interviews

Before session (if you are scheduled for this day)

  • At this point I plan to use a waiting room approach, asking that everyone who is scheduled for the day join the session at the beginning of the session and wait for me to call them in. This is because interview session length is not the same for each student. Some types of questions need more time to have an equal opportunity to answer.
  • Read the instructions for the final assessment interviews (how to know when you interview, how to join the Zoom).
  • In preparation, review your submitted essay so you are familiar with it.
  • Review, also, the narrative elements (module page and associated links on those pages).
  • You can check on which day (or, if overseas, at which day and time) you will be interviewed at the top of this Session Details page via G-Drive view only folder > J173Fa20 Final interview schedule. Be ready to join (with video), with your essay already open.

During session

  • Some students will have been randomly assigned to this day for their one-on-one assessment.
  • I will ask from some or all of these areas:
    • I may ask questions that support a determination of the KNOWLEDGE component of the grade portfolio. These will be questions about narrative elements (what they are, terms we have used) or their significant (how they are used to generate narrative interest).
    • I may ask questions that support a determination of the SKILLS component of the grade portfolio. These will be questions entirely or primarily about your essay. ("Explain further" "Why did you ..." ""Explain the role of your narrative element in SSM number ...")
    • I might also present to you a scenario that you will need to analyze on the spot. This might support the KNOWLEDGE or SKILLS final grade assessment, or both.
  • These students will have interviews on this day. They should log in to Zoom by 2:10 and wait in the waiting room until invited in. No one else should log into this Zoom session. I will not announce in which order I will call students. Be ready to be called at any time.
    • David, Derek, Michelle K, Shannon, Victor

After session

  • If you have now finished your interview, there is nothing more to do! You are finished with the class! Come to the final get-together if you have time. If you have not yet interviewed, continue to prepare for that.
