For me:

This page is updated AS THE CLASS PROGRESSES and not just before a session. Content can change after a session to better reflect what had happened.

IF THERE IS NO ENTRY FOR A DAY ("lorem" is still everywhere), USE AS THE OFFICIAL STATEMENT FOR HOW TO PREPARE the Google Sheet version of the schedule titled "Backup schedule" which can be found inside the "G-Drive folder (view only)," or ask me.

Week 1

Notes for this week:

  • We get started. These are both important sessions that help position you to learn well and score well in this class.

Session 1 Wed Jan 20 — Orientation

Before session

  • Read the syllabus, look over the credibility assignment and gather your questions.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call. NOTE: • Attendance except for DTZ students is expected for all session. • "Late arrival" means if you are not present at the time I call your name. If you have missed roll call please never interrupt class to say that you are now present, not use the after-class time to discuss this. Just submit to the missed class Google Form. I am aware that technology can complicate things. I have now taught seven zoom classes and have a good sense for when this is an issue. I will keep this in mind when recording attendance. • As the syllabus states, you are expected to have a video presence unless you have scheduled office hours with me and discussed your situation. • Also, entirely avoid multitasking if you want a perfect attendance record. I input a "1" or a fraction of "1" after class that reflects your engagement, not just presence, in class.
  2. I will point out some aspects of the syllabus that have a particularly directly impact on the course grade, give a sense of the overall structure of the course, and answer our questions along the way.

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtz" assignment to do. Any student who missed this class, including wait-list students, is expected to complete this assignment.

Session 2 Fri Jan 22 — Credibility (lecture)

Before session

  • Take a look at the credibility assignment and bring questions.

During session (can change last minute)

This is an outline for the 17 audio files on bCourse. These set of recordings was made from the tea class that also was to meet today. Here and there I have edited the content when necessary. If you are also taking the tea class and listened to those recordings, there isn't enough difference here for it to be worth your time to re-listen, except Item 15

  1. For students who have recently joined the class: review the preliminary material (audio and video files) on the Sonic top page, read past announcements)
  2. Announcements — read them
  3. Google Form
  4. Feedback
  5. About me and how this class was conceived
  6. The “equal interest rule”
  7. Attendance • Required attendance except for distant time zone, These I will put in DTZ : Hyun (Korea), Lina (Japan), William (China), Yinge (China). Please schedule to meet with me, except Lina with whom I have already worked. • Video presence unless you talk with me about it • No multitasking • Zoom login issues
  8. Manage assignments, no late material (boxes lock)
  9. Academic honesty, very vigilant will ask sometimes when doubt is just small
  10. Active learning • This is going to show primarily through the type of research you do.
  11. Portfolio grades
  12. P/NP
  13. How to know what to do, when (sonic) • Syllabus location (sonic) • Syllabus, Part 2 (sonic, what I prefer to be called)
  14. Engage: if you stay involved, the grade will take care of itself … focus on learning all variety of things, not just that aspect of tea that you like most
  15. About the class: Read in theory, read premodern selections (and do analysis on them using the theories covered, then read from student selected material
  16. Submit questions
  17. View all the credibility material before class next time

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtz" assignment to do.

Week 2

Notes for this week:

  • This week covers two elements foundation to the course: one of the two "baseline" objects we use for our further discussion of urami (the film, the other is the novel Masks), and beginning to build a sense of community among classmates. This class focuses a lot on the comments and discussion of students so it is good to start to figure out your place within the group and how you think others might interpret the stories we cover.

Session 3 Mon Jan 25 — Confessions (Kokuhaku 告白; film, 20th c.)

Before session

  • Know that we will take screen shots of the class today, so everyone can identify everyone when asked to do peer reviews using students names.
  • First, look at the definitions of urami at Module > "Urami definitions".
  • Now skim over bCourse > Pages > "Film – Confessions (film, 21st c.)" so that you can talk freely about characters (you know their names) and can parse the structure of the film.
  • AFTER that, view "Confessions" (at bCourse, "Media Gallery"). We will discuss things such as
    • "Based only on Moriguchi, how would you define 'urami'?"
    • "Who else might have urami in this film?"
    • "Do you think the director believes that revenge reduces or eliminates feelings of urami?"
    • "Do you think Shuuya's actions are insufficient, about right, or too much, given his psychic pain? (This is not a right or wrong question.) Or, is this question an impossible question since we cannot truly know the pain of another?"
    • And so on.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. Screen shots of the class.
  3. Discussion of the film.

After session

  • You need to purchase Masks.
  • Make final changes to your Student Profile pages, including confirming that you have listed your classname correctly, provided a pronunciation guide to the name when appropriate, and adding your credibility statements.
  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it. Uploads will be to our G-Drive folder (view only)—see button at the top of this page.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtz" assignment to do. There almost certainly will be one.

Session 4 Wed Jan 27 — Getting to know each other some

Before session

  • Everyone: Scan through at least half of the Student Profiles focusing on your peers' comments about anger, but also take a look at the credibility comments to check whether you think you completed the assignment correctly.
  • Although it is unlikely there are newly arrived students at this point, if there are, they should refer to the list of things that need to be done located at Session 3.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. In all my classes a sense of community strengthens the learning environment. I respect that amount of peer-to-peer teaching that happens at a university like this with so many intelligent students. I try to facilitate that to some degree. This day is designed just so that when you are in a group with someone later, it is likely you will have already met and talked with them once. One of the interesting things about this class is learning what makes your peers angry, how they deal with anger, what they think of revenge, and so on. However, this is a chance to share information with your peers about the credibility assignment, if that is useful to you. And of course if you are short on discussion topics you can discuss the film.
  3. We will make breakout groups, then 5-7 minutes later we will reform those groups, and just spend the whole class doing this.
  4. I will visit a group or groups with each rotation—not to answer questions or to participate but rather so that DTZ students can observe groups. (I also ask they they meet together within their near time zones.)

After session

  • Distant time zone students need to complete their group meeting assignment. Those who missed this session cannot make it up.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtz" assignment to do. There almost certainly will be—just meeting with your group is not sufficient, especially since there are just of you.

Session 5 Fri Jan 29 — Getting to know each other some (cont.)

Before session

  • There is an exercise to submit (for the local students). If you do not submit this exercise, your ability to engage this class session is limited. Be sure to submit.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. We will continue with breakout rooms but under different rules.

After session

  • DTZ and absent students will have an assignment based on this session's recording.

Week 3

Notes for this week:

  • We read Masks, in full. This, together with "Confessions" are out two baseline texts. Be sure to read it in full, and with care. Think of how it is similar and different (in terms of urami) from "Confessions."

Week 4

Notes for this week:

  • This is one of 2-3 weeks of heavy reading in this class. Kawai is the most difficult. Doi is fairly difficult. The other authors are less mysterious but Reider is a bit long. Settle in for some work for a while. It will be easier after that.
  • This week is wall-to-wall Kawai. Good luck!

Session 9 Mon Feb 8 — Kawai's Jungian women: Day One — Forbidden Chamber, Bush Warbler

Before session

  • Do not skip this reading.
  • You will be asked to use the concepts stated here in your analysis later.
  • Read Modules -- Course reading and viewing -- Kawai's Jungian Women
  • If necessary, read Carl Jung's wiki page (the initial paragraph, the list of key concepts, and click on archetypes and read about that).
  • Then, using the chart on that module page, do the reading for Day One.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. We will discuss Kawai, Jung, Kawai's first chapter, and how Kawai fits into our course.
    • uroboros / Great Mother: positive / negative — Ouroboros: (Wiki) "The ouroboros is often interpreted as a symbol for eternal cyclic renewal or a cycle of life, death, and rebirth. The skin-sloughing process of snakes symbolizes the transmigration of souls, the snake biting its own tail is a fertility symbol in some religions, and the tail of the snake is a phallic symbol, the mouth is a yonic or womb-like symbol."
    • non-daily space / intermediate space (liminal space) / daily space
    • “nothing happens” / “The Nothingness has happened”
    • aware: "a sense of beauty awakened by the sudden arrest of the story's  process just before its completion"
    • urami: "... she was driven to the depths of shame and turned into an Oni. But is that not almost too beautifully human?" This is the beauty of rancor, and it is something human par excellence. If aware occurs at the sudden cessation of a process and is directed at something disappearing, then urami looks toward the continuation of a process and is born out of the spirit of resistance to the necessity of disappearing."
    • disappearing woman
    • forbidden chamber (shame)

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Wednesday's reading is a bit heavy.

Session 10 Wed Feb 10 — Kawai's Jungian women: Day One (continued)

Before session

  • Look at the below questions and arrive with some thoughts.
  • No reading for this session, (if you have read the Day One material and have a fairly good understanding of it).

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. We will continue to discuss the Day One assigned reading for this day using these questions:
    1. Comment by Wallace: aware
    2. (Wallace): Is there aware in "Bush Warbler"?
    3. Comment by Wallace: aware/disappearing vs urami/not disappearing (resisting) .... aware as transcendent, urami as all-too-human ... uroboric thinking ...
    4. Do you agree with Kawai's claim that "... she was driven to the depths of shame and turned into an Oni. But is that not almost too beautifully human? This is the beauty of rancor, and it is something human par excellence."
    5. Do you think Mizuho (Mizuki) is a disappearing woman?
    6. Do you think Yasuko is a disappearing woman?
    7. Do you think Harume is a disappearing woman?
    8. Is there anyone in either "Confessions" or Masks towards whom we could feel aware?
    9. Is there any person (not just woman) in either "Confessions" or Masks that seems to be resisting disappearing?
    10. Can you find "a personal shame of any kind that leads to urami" in either "Confessions" or Masks?
    11. Can you find "a personal shame resulting from the revealing of a secret that leads to urami" in either "Confessions" or Masks?
    12. Do you think that when Shuuya was told by Mizuki that he had a mother's complex that that was the revealing of a secret?
    13. Do you think that when Naoki tells his mother that he is not the good boy she thinks he is that that was revealing a secret?
    14. Are there any hidden chambers in either "Confessions" or Masks?
    15. Is there "non-daily space" in either "Confessions" or Masks?
    16. Can we use the concept of "nothing happens" in either "Confessions" or Masks?

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Friday's reading is a bit heavy.

Week 6

Notes for this week:

  • We finish Doi and then probably read Bargen, the third of our four thinkers that become the basis for analysis later. Friday might instead be review. I'll decide that after seeing how well Doi is understood.

Session 14 Mon Feb 22 — Doi's amae/urami: Day Two (amae; yutori; secrets part 1)

Before session

  • Using the chart on the "Academic book – Doi's amae/urami" module page, do the reading for Day Two.

  1. Roll call.
  2. We will discuss the assigned reading for this day.

    • Woman Who Eats Nothing
    • Confessions
    • Masks
    • Weak Vessel (Files > Concepts > Weak Vessel (Yowaki Utsuwa - 20th c Japan) by Kawabata copy 2)
  3. I might ask you to comment on these assertions by Doi
    • "two essential qualities of the human being who has charm: an interior life that is indiscernible from the outside, and the ability to arouse feelings of intimacy in others"
    • "love, by its very nature, is a secret of the heart, and it can only reveal itself as the confession of a secret"

Note

We are associating Kawai's concept of the forbidden chamber, shame, the "gaze of others", Doi's value of secrets (yutori, charm), disappearing women, confession (East and West), and (although this really comes up in the next session) marginalization

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.

Week 11

Notes for this week:

  • We continue reading other stories that may or may not help us understand "urami" — please remember the "urami" remains our topic, not other emotions. These other stories are read to help us understand the boundaries of "urami".

  1. Roll call.

  3. New wording of a question: "Are there any SIGNIFICANT (for our class) overlaps or differences in the qualities of the individuals who possess the key emotions you have identified compared to those who experienced urami in our two base texts (Confessions, Masks)? (in max of 1500 characters)"
  4. Class-wide — DTZ student question: "Do you think The Fan might end up like Shuya if he was also in Confessions?"
  5. Class-wide — DTZ student question: "In fact, I really want to ask, what do you think about the responsibilities and consequences that you should bear after you become famous. For example, some people will say that if you are famous, someone will scold you for not liking you. This is the consequence of being famous, but you have to bear it, because you enjoy popularity and more social resources and money."
  6. Class-wide — Student: "Doi's theory on the denial amae is useful for understanding the psychology of the Fan. The Fan reveals their amae to Tyler, the Creator when they ask for a picture, detailing just how much of a fan they are and how much they resonate with Tyler, the Creator's music. When Tyler, the Creator expresses his discomfort with taking a photo he is rejecting the Fan's amae. This rejection of amae drives the fan into more desperation to explain themselves." Question for anyone who did NOT submit: Is it useful to use the word "amae" in this comment or is there an English word that is better?
  7. Class-wide — Student: "I love this song and Tyler the Creator, but it is difficult to listen to some of his more offensive songs, such as this one. I guess it is just important to know he is playing somewhat of a character in many of his albums." Roles ....
  8. Breakout —Thinking beyond the boundaries of the narrative (at a meta-level, time frames)

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.

Session 37 Fri April 23 — In-class writing event: Your definition of "Urami in Japanese stories"

Before session

  • Organize your notes on urami. Have your ANALYSIS submissions available. Prepare in your mind your working definition of urami.

During session (can change last minute)

  1. Roll call.
  2. You will be given a prompt. While the core question is "Urami in Japanese stories" there will be a format to use that is not what you might expect. Therefore, while writing ahead of time a paragraph that defines urami might be helpful, it is unlikely you will be able to use it as written. You will need access to the scholars, and to the SSM and to your analysis of them. The work will be due at the end of the hour.

After session

  • Distant time zone students and those who missed the session should watch for the upload of the session video and view it.
  • Check as to whether there is an "ENGAGEdtz" assignment to do.
