Session 13—Th, Oct 6: Mujōkan / mono no aware IV: Tale of Genji III
Topics
❖ Tale of Genji, chapters 12, 13, 35, 40
❖ Mono no aware
Thoughts—read before class, revisit for tests
I have waited until now for more extensive comments on mono no aware to emphasize the role of the sweep of a narrative (time) in Murasaki's use of this concept.
Topics within the narrative discussed in terms of mujōkan / aware:
- Suma & Akashi as chapters particularly imbued with a sense of aware
- Aging Genji
- Murasaki's death
Other narrative events noted:
- The Third Princess
Required—to be completed for today's session
✓ Read before class Tale of Genji, chapters 12, 13, 35, 40 in McCullough's abridged edition Genji & Heike.
✓ Review after class the powerpoint I present: aware with some okashi (bSpace, PPT)
