The Ukrainian Diabetes Project (UDP) medical team that traveled to Ukraine this summer consisted of the following individuals: Andrea "Andy" Skrypka RD, CDE, Volodymyr Skrypka, and Ellen Simpson MD. They volunteered 4 weeks in the regions of Crimea Republic, Cherkasy, and Kiev to provide relief and support to the Ukrainian children with diabetes.

Clinics

Sudak Clinic 1st year with UDP - 30 diabetic children provided with 10 hours of diabetes education and one year's worth of insulin, syringes, and blood testing strips, worth $36,000. Sudak is located in the Crimea Republic on the Black Sea. The town population is 30,000 with 30 diabetic children in the nearby area.

Cherkasy Clinic 6th year with UDP - 44 diabetic children received one year's worth of insulin, syringes, and blood testing strips, worth $52,800. Ellen Simpson MD acted as advisor to the medical staff, parents, and children during camp. The Ukrainian physicians say the children receiving services from the Ukrainian Diabetes Project have the best growth rates as compared to years earlier, and they have noted less hospitalization.

Kiev Clinic 1st year with UDP - The UDP team visited the Kiev Sanatorium and preliminary meetings were held to discuss the possibilities of providing educational services in Kiev. Collaborative efforts with the Diabetes Charity Fund of Kiev and Kiev Sanatorium were initiated to discuss plans to develop a Family Camp program in Kiev.

Since 1990, approximately 1,400 children with diabetes have received diabetes supplies and 10 hours of education on the management of their condition. Over 1.5 million dollars worth of diabetes supplies have been provided to these children in Ukraine.

Diabetes Supplies

Our recent collaboration with the Kiev Diabetes Charity Fund has allowed us to ship supplies directly to Ukraine for distribution through their education program. Forty-six boxes of diabetes supplies, worth $25,000, were shipped directly to Kiev. Thanks to the following volunteers who helped organize this shipment: Volodya Skrypka, Kathleen Broderson, Mr./Mrs. Roderick and the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Healdsburg, and Barbara/Tim Tuscany.

Future

The Ukrainian Diabetes Project will emphasize the assistance in camp development, education, and local production of diabetes supplies in Ukraine. We also plan to facilitate various exchange programs at the Diabetic Youth Foundation's Bearskin Meadow Camp, located in Kings Canyon National Park.
