The Ukrainian Diabetes Project (UDP) medical team traveled to Ukraine in June. They volunteered 2 weeks in the region of Kiyiv (Kiev) to provide aid and support to the Ukrainian children with diabetes. The main objective was to provide humanitarian aid and education directly to the children with diabetes living in Kiyiv, and to continue the collaboration with the Diabetes Charity Fund of Kiyiv to assist in the development of a Diabetes Family Camp.

Clinics

Kiyiv Clinic 2nd year with UDP - Provided 50 children with insulin, blood testing equipment, and syringes along with 10 hours of education at a newly established diabetes camp located just outside Kiyiv. The Ukrainian Diabetes Project's collaborative efforts with the Diabetes Charity Fund of Kiyiv continue toward the development of a Family Camp program in Kiyiv. In August the UDP sponsored four members of the Diabetes Charity Fund of Kiyiv to participate at the Diabetic Youth Foundation's Bearskin Meadow Camp for children with diabetes. This camp has existed since 1938 and is located in King's Canyon National Park in the Sierra Mountains of California. During this week the Ukrainian delegates met the executive, medical, and camp directors of the Diabetic Youth Foundation to better understand the management strategies that have made Bearskin Meadow Camp so successful. In addition, they fully participated at Family Camp Session observing the daily camp and medical routines. Other programs they directly observed during their time here included the UCSF Endocrine Clinic, Dr. David Price endocrinology private practice, and the Diabetes Wellness Series at the Northern California Center for Well-Being.

Donetsk region 1st year with UDP - The Ukrainian Diabetes Project provided 150 copies of the Ukrainian version of Dr. Luther Travis manual, "An Illustrated Aid to Diabetes Mellitus", to the region of Donetsk.

Since 1990, approximately 1750 children with diabetes have received diabetes supplies and 10 hours of education on the management of their condition. Over 1.5 million dollars worth of diabetes supplies have been provided to these children in Ukraine.

This event would not have been possible without the support of our generous sponsors which included: Andy's Produce, Bayer Corporation, Cellular One, Clover Stornetta, Healdsburg Inn on the Plaza, Madrona Manor Bed & Breakfast, Mangia Bene Restaurant, Mariner Graphics, Parducci Wine Cellars, Parke-Davis Pharmaceuticals, Power Bar, Russ Berrie, Windsor Safeway, Silverado Hill Cellars, Sonoma Valley Bagel, Starbucks Coffee, T&B Sports, Willie Bird Turkey, and Windsor Grange.

    Diabetes Supplies

Insulin and blood testing strips were donated by Boehringer Mannheim, Diabetic Youth Foundation, and Novo Nordisk for this summer's program. Our recent collaboration with the Kiyiv Diabetes Charity Fund allowed us to ship supplies in November 1997 directly to Ukraine for distribution through their education program. Forty-six boxes of diabetes supplies, worth $25,000, were shipped directly to Kiyiv. The supplies continue to be distributed to the children in Kiyiv throughout the year on an on-going basis.

    Future

The Ukrainian Diabetes Project will assist in camp development, education, and local production of diabetes supplies in Ukraine. We also plan to continue to facilitate various exchange programs with the Diabetic Youth Foundation's Bearskin Meadow Camp.
