margueritte on the champs elysees with the arc de triomphe in the distance.

the concorde metro station straddles the intersection of metro lines 1, 8 and 12. corridors ran in many directions, uphill, downhill, and with stairs. at the intersection of two tunnels an accomplished accordian player sang for coins, his rich sounds filling the corridors while well dressed parisians hurried past. we rode line 1 to the west end of the line at la defense.

we climbed up from the metro into the busy train station at la defense. we climbed out to the plaza, then up many more steps to look at the arch and at the view east down the avenue de la grande armee to the arc de triomphe and the champs elysees beyond. we explored the mall, which was teeming with shoppers. we purchased cinnamon walnut breadsticks. i shopped in the stationery department of a large store that reminded me of a french target while margueritte looked at children's books. we went to a small bookstore and bought a french-english dictionary.

we returned to the metro station and took line 1 to franklin d. roosevelt station in the middle of the avenue des champs elysees. it was a marvelous broad sidewalk. we strolled along glancing at shops, movie theatres, car dealers and people, smiling big silly grins to be strolling on the champs elysees. i took a picture of margueritte, then she took a picture of me in approximately the same spot. we plan to put them together as a composite using photoshop. it still may happen, but her picture is much cuter than mine, so until i make the composite, we can look at this nice picture.

we went back into the metro and rode line 9 to the trocadero station. our goal was to walk from the palais du chaillot down to the seine, then to cross the river and walk under the tour eiffel.
