christine meneclier in her kitchen with her brother-in-law yves meneclier. [ 8 ] christine, learning english, had a dictionary to look up words. we got out the map of the united states margueritte had prepared, with all the american minicliers listed by the towns where they lived. christine studied all of margueritte's labels on the map, asking questions about each family member. i explained that texas is bigger than france, and california is almost as big as italy, just to put the size of america in perspective in relation to europe. yves spoke almost no english. he had his wife vera ask us about "route 66". he has a harley-davidson motorcycle and wants to ride across the american desert. on our map of the u.s.a. i pointed out the path of route 66 from chicago to kansas city to albuquerque to los angeles. he asked me what kind of food i cook at home. i said i cook a lot of mexican food, especially tacos. he said he loves tacos, and put his fingers to his lips with a kissing sound. delphine, phillippe's daughter, arrived with her three year old son adrian. there were more air kiss greetings as adrian ran to pet the dog. delphine spoke perfect english. this changed everything!
