christine meneclier and her genealogy poster showing the common ancestor eight generations ago when nickolas meneclier, margueritte's great-great-great-great-great-grandfather, emigrated from france to canada in the early 1700s. [ 9 ] christine showed us her genealogy chart. she reviewed the american minicliers with margueritte, making corrections and additions as needed. we looked at the pictures of the french menecliers and asked about the children not present, such as delphine's brother and christian's daughter. we sat down to a meal in the dining room. the table was wide, with two electric grills in the middle. the grills were hot. plates were passed around with cheese and raw meat, one plate each of duck, chicken, pork and beef. christine had drawn little labels stuck on each plate showing a cartoon of the animal. the cheese went in small removable trays set beneath the grill. meat was tossed on the grills. we were told to cook the duck first, to season the grills. everyone started cooking their own food. while the meat was cooking and the cheese was melting christine passed around a basket of bread and a bowl of boiled potatoes. the melted cheese was poured over the potatoes. red wine was poured. denise, sitting next to me, nudged me to mind my cheese, which i burnt.
